[Children's Writing Update] 20 Years? Really?
January 28th, 2010 at 12:06 am edited by Jon Bard Celebrate Our 20th Birthday with 20% Off a CBI Clubhouse Membership!
Holy cow. Twenty years. It's hard to believe that what started in 1990 with "hey, I've got an idea..." could have blossomed into the business that has sustained our family and has helped thousands and thousands of folks from all over the globe pursue their dream of writing children's books. And yet, here we are. And truly, thanks to the CBI Clubhouse and all the Fightin' Bookworms in our writing community, we can honestly say that we've never been more excited about the possibilities. We began with a simple newsletter, laid out on WordPerfect (for DOS!), cut and pasted (using real paste, mind you...) and photocopied.

(read more) Last Updated on Tuesday, 21 September 2010 11:46 Share The Gift of Reading The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, in conjunction with Alamosa Books, is kicking off a book drive called The Gift of Reading. They are collecting books for "at risk" youth serviced by the Peanut Butter and Jelly Therapeutic Programs, the Barrett Foundation, and the Metro Detention Center. The book drive begins with a celebration of literacy on Sept. 25, from 3 to 5 p.m., at Alamosa Books in Albuquerque (Northwest corner of Paseo Del Norte and Ventura, near Trader Joes). Several New Mexico children or young adult authors will present a food or activity based on their latest book. People are encouraged to purchase books for themselves, and an extra one for a needy child. Gently used books may also be donated. Please order your books in advance to ensure supplies. Educators receive a 20% discount. The book drive will run through Dec. 6 so that books can be distributed in time for the holidays. "Sometimes the difference between a life of literacy versus one of illiteracy is finding the one book that makes you want to read more," says the event organizer, Carolee Dean.

Many educators and parents assume that young children must progress through a sequence of clearly defined skill areas to acquire listening, speaking, reading, and, finally, writing facility. As a result, young children often are not encouraged to write until they have learned how to read and have mastered the mechanics of writing (grammar, capitalization, punctuation). Recent studies in emergent literacythe early stages of learning to write and readhave shown that young children compose before they know much about the conventions of writing and reading or have the skill to control the formation of letters. As young children gradually realize the usefulness of writingeven unconventional writingthey are encouraged to develop related literacy skills.
High/Scope's Approach to Emergent Literacy
A developmental approach to literacy emphasizes the gradual emergence of skills in all areas of language rather than the end results of this process: formal skills in speaking, reading, and writing. Such a developmental approach is used by the High/Scope Educational Research Foundation in Ypsilanti, Michigan. High/Scope curriculum developers and teaching adults recognize that preschoolers and kindergartners have plenty of ideas and enjoy composing and reading their compositions.
