Analysis: Records in "Swine flu far less severe in latest calculations"
By on December 11, 2009 8:34 PM No Comments No TrackBacks USA Today wrote a story about how the Swine flu was almost even with the dealth toll from the seasonal flu. This story is full of numbers ranging from ages, dealth tolls, hospitalizations, years and people infected with the flu. To obtain all these numbers, the reporter would have to know how to access hosipital records and maybe find different studies about the death toll for the Swine and seasonal flu. He would have had to contact health officials, medical journals, health organizations and perhaps various researchers. There is a percent that either could have came from an analysis or one he had to calculae on his own.
Analysis: Diversity story on Chinese language dialects
By on November 19, 2009 3:01 PM No Comments No TrackBacks The New York Times wrote an article in October about how the Chinese language in and around Manhattan's Chinatown is changing from Cantonese to Mandarin. I met a Chinese-American student at Coffman Student Union and discussed this article with him. He is a senior named Thomas, who lives just off-campus. Thomas convienantly has been to Chinatown twice throughout his life and has a general background about the Chinese language. His grandparents speak Cantonese. We both came to the conclusion that this article is more substansive than stereotypical of the Chinese-American population. The news article starts off with one man's perspective on the way language is changing in Chinatown. The article goes into more factual information about the people that live in the area and about how schools are adapting to teach children the different dialects.

It is with great honor and privilege for me, as CASPA 2010-2011 Chairman and President, to lead this very fine and influential Chinese semiconductor professional association to yet another great year ahead. ... It is with great honor and privilege for me, as CASPA 2010-2011 Chairman and President, to lead this very fine and influential Chinese semiconductor professional association to yet another great year ahead. Seven years ago, I left Harvard University to launch a startup company here in Silicon Valley. At the time, I was on my sabbatical leave and supposed to return afterwards to the ivory tower in the east coast. It never crossed my mind then that I would wind up settling here for good, much less devoting myself to an organization called CASPA. Have I not got involved with CASPA, I would be wondering whether I have done the right thing in relocating to Silicon Valley. To me, CASPA opens up a greater purpose in life, as it surely does to every volunteer.

Asian-Americans Kids: Moving Back and Forth Between Asia
By Jeff Thursday, January 1, 2009 9 Comments My boss has been living in India (I like to joke that my management has been outsourced), but he is moving back to the United States.  One of his concerns is how his daughter will deal with the move.  She originally lived in the US, moved to India, and is now moving back again.  This article from the Mercury News Philippe Nover Jun ) of the Wonder Girls spent time in San Jose.  Sam Milby is successful in the Philippines.  Jero went to Japan to start a career doing Enka .   My nephew who does hip hop and electronic music and one of the last people I would expect to go to Asia, goes to the Philippines and other parts of Asia to perform almost every year.  I am sure that there are many others that I did not mention. I have occasionally thought about making that career move to Asia, but never that seriously.  I do regret not taking my own kids there.  It will be interesting to see how this new generation of Asian American kids evolve.  Will they become totally assimilated into American culture, as some people say, or will they start forming a new hybrid global culture combining Asian and American?
What next?

In an authoritarian country, the majority dare not speak for fear of unjust persecution; in a democratic society, the minority must speak to claim their constitutional and human rights. Chinese American Form (in English) was established to facilitate open communication between Chinese Americans and the American public. It has been dedicated to promoting mutual understanding among all Americans since 1985. CAF has published articles on many topics including culture, philosophy, history, traditions, and heritage, as well as Chinese Americans affairs, accomplishments, and life experiences.

(embargo copy - please release after 12:00pm HK time today World Cities Meet in Hong Kong to take action on Climate Change Hong Kong, November 5, 2010 (Firday) today at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The C40 climate leadership group is an association of cities from the developed and the developing world that are already taking action on climate change. The Workshop brings cities together from around the C40 network for an exchange on latest best practises and thinking on low carbon living. The two key themes of the event are improving energy efficiency of existing and new buildings and developing and planning for the uptake of Electric Vehicles. Because cities have a significant role to play in regulating and managing buildings and transport, these sectors represent critical opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the impact of climate change.
Buildings alone represent an average of 60% of total global emissions, and there are more than 20 million vehicles in just 19 key C40 cities.

A prestigious award given to two non-profit organizations in Houston, CCC will receive $200,000 in general operating support, along with participation in specially designed leadership development programs.

By William Wong Published May 18, 2010 In my previous blog , I shared raw, honest feelings of a few ethnic Chinese and Japanese email correspondents responding to earlier blogs Given the respective histories of African Americans and Chinese/Asian Americans, there’s an irony about the current black-Chinese/Asian conflict. Both blacks and yellows have ugly American histories at the hands of white people and government – slavery and legal segregation in the American south for African Americans; Chinese Exclusion Act and other discriminatory laws against Chinese/Asian Americans. One might think there would be sympathy and compassion for each other, but just knowing these respective painful histories won’t by itself bridge the black-Chinese/Asian divide. Though there are incidental overlaps and countless black-yellow interactions, these really aren’t shared histories, except for the fact that The Man (white folks) had the power to keep blacks and yellows down, i.e., individualized and institutional racism, plain and simple. We were becoming a fairer, more equitable nation. Post-World War II America underwent profound changes, deeply affecting the economic, social, cultural, and political lives of African Americans – desegregation of schools, work places, neighborhoods; southern blacks moving north; expansion of the black middle- and upper classes; more African Americans winning political office.

The Chinese Historical and Cultural Project (CHCP) is based in Santa Clara County, California. It was founded in 1987 as a non-profit organization to promote and preserve Chinese American and Chinese history and culture through community outreach activities. The leadership of the organization is comprised of volunteers Officers, Board of Directors, and Advisory Board. A Board of Trustees oversees the major maintenance of the Ng Shing Gung Museum with the City of San Jose and History San Jose. CHCP's first major project was to reconstruct the Ng Shing Gung , a religious and community center originally built in 1888 in San Jose's "Heinlenville" settlement, the last Chinatown of San Jose. In 1991, CHCP donated the Ng Shing Gung Museum to the City of San Jose, making it available to the community at the History Park, at Kelley Park, San Jose. The museum building lower floor serves as a Chinese-American Museum telling the stories of the early Chinese pioneers in Santa Clara Valley. The second floor showcases the original 1888 gold-gilded altar and the five gods. The short documentary movie of the last Chinatown in San Jose, Homebase: A Chinatown Called Heinlenville , was directed by Jessica Yu, an Oscar-award winner, and can be viewed upstairs at the Ng Shing Gung Museum.
