China information and information on Chinese traditional Culture and Arts
Throughout its long recorded history, China has maintained control of its boundaries almost without invasion. The fact that both literature and the arts in China reveal a striking interdependence over several millennia tends to support the view that China's culture is equally uninterrupted. However, Chinese culture as exemplified in the arts and applied arts is not a pure tradition.
Chinese Culture
While curiosity and a love of exotic motifs borrowed from neighbours to east and west have helped to shape a great technical mastery and a rich vocabulary of style, a love of tradition has ensured that homogeneity persists. Whenever motifs and styles are assimilated into the Chinese tradition, they recur throughout the centuries, in line with the taste for archaism which runs throughout much of Chinese art. This taste in itself encourages the view that China has a monolithic and self-sufficient artistic culture. One of the most influential introductions was the acceptance of Buddhism in the second century BC, which brought a new religious and philosophical culture and its attendant art and iconography. New styles of figure painting and sculpture were required, as well as new patterns of temple layout, furnishing and decoration; their assimilation took many centuries.

A Brief Synopsis of Chinese Archaic Jade
Chinese Archaic Jade
Jade best exemplifies the essential aspects of Chinese culture and aesthetic appreciation. This beautiful stone is admired for its hardness, translucent colours and warm brilliance. From these natural properties the ancients found the embodiment of the cardinal virtues of a perfect gentleman. Ancient texts such as Li Ji (Book of Rites) expounded the importance of jade to a gentleman whose wearing of jade pendants achieved both moralizing and ornamental purposes. With time jade came to be identified as a symbol for everything that is good, pure, noble and sublime. The history of Chinese jade articles lasts for seven (7) thousand years. They are characterized with wide applications, multiple varieties, peculiar designs, colorful hues, delicate and beautiful patterns, unique styles and excellent craftsmanship. Consequently, jade articles are an extraordinary type of artistic fortunes for the Chinese people as well as a shining star in the treasure house of the world arts. A simple exploration of the history of the Chinese jade objects will be made in this short article. According to the archaeological data, the history of jade applications in China can be traced back to seven (7) thousand years ago. The development process of this longstanding history goes through the New Stone Age (Neolithin), Hsia, Shang, Chou, Chun Chiu, the Warring States, Chin, Han, Tang, Sung, Yuan, Ming and Ching dynasties. Whereas, the process of development differs from one era to another. A brief statement of respective development process is given as follows.

You are invited to nominate and submit biographies of famous Hakka people to be included in the first Directory of Hakka people.
    Who are the Hakkas?
During the last hundred years or so, Hakka people migrated to South East Asia, East Africa, Europe (Holland, United Kingdom, France, Germany..), South America (Brazil, Trinidad...) Canada, US. About 7% of the 1.2 billion Chinese clearly state their Hakka origin or heritage. However, the actual number may be more as many Hakka Han who settled along the path of migration assimilate with the local people. The Hakka identity is gradually lost.
Hakka people are noted for their preservation of certain cultural characteristics that could be traced to pre-Qin period (about 2200 years ago) as expressed in the custom, foods, spoken language, etc.
Hakka people are also known to be very adamant in defending their cultural heritage, which was the reason for their migration to flee from the "northern" influence at that time.

    Hanfu: Chinese Traditional Clothing
Posted on October 4th, 2008 by u_1_admin and tagged Chinese culture clothing Olympic Hanfu (Chinese traditional clothing) has a number of distinct characteristics. One of them is the front style. The picture below is a typical women's dress. There are two parts overlapping on the front. This is called "Jiao Ling" (Crossing Collar), which is a main feature of nearly all Asian costumes (influenced by China). The order of the two parts is quite important. From the wearer's point of view, the crossing is always on his/her right side, which is called "You Ren" (Right Front). Some ethnic groups in Asia have costumes almost identical to Hanfu, but they prefer to put the crossing on the left side. Therefore, the front style is an important symbol of group differentiation and culture identity. An easy way to recognize Hanfu is that the collar forms a "y" shape if you look at the dress from the front. In the West, there is also a function about the order or direction of the collar: the left collar covering the right is for men's wear, while the right collar covering the left is for women's wear. It is interesting that the Chinese use collar to differentiate ethnic groups and the Europeans use it to make distinction between genders. So, judging by Hanfu's criteria, the Western men's wears are compliant to the "Right Front" rule, while the Western women's dress are certainly foreign.

The Chinese Historical and Cultural Project (CHCP) is based in Santa Clara County, California. It was founded in 1987 as a non-profit organization to promote and preserve Chinese American and Chinese history and culture through community outreach activities. The leadership of the organization is comprised of volunteers Officers, Board of Directors, and Advisory Board. A Board of Trustees oversees the major maintenance of the Ng Shing Gung Museum with the City of San Jose and History San Jose. CHCP's first major project was to reconstruct the Ng Shing Gung , a religious and community center originally built in 1888 in San Jose's "Heinlenville" settlement, the last Chinatown of San Jose. In 1991, CHCP donated the Ng Shing Gung Museum to the City of San Jose, making it available to the community at the History Park, at Kelley Park, San Jose. The museum building lower floor serves as a Chinese-American Museum telling the stories of the early Chinese pioneers in Santa Clara Valley. The second floor showcases the original 1888 gold-gilded altar and the five gods. The short documentary movie of the last Chinatown in San Jose, Homebase: A Chinatown Called Heinlenville , was directed by Jessica Yu, an Oscar-award winner, and can be viewed upstairs at the Ng Shing Gung Museum.

For decades CYSM has been actively engaged with communities across the state of Victoria and internationally to create an awareness and appreciation of the rich culture the Chinese community has to offer.
