China is located in South East Asia along the Pacific coastline and is the world's third largest country. It has an area of 9.6 million square kilometers and a coastline measuring 18000 kilometers and stretches from Mohe, in Heilongjiang Province in the North to Zengmu Ansha in the South. China is bordered by fourteen countries which are Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Burma, India, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakstan, Mongolia, and Russia. Due to it's vast size, China has a variety of physical features although two thirds of the land is defined as mountainous, with the west of the country (the Quinghei-Tibet plateau) having the highest mountain regions where the average is over 4000 meters. In fact China contains fifty mountains that stand at over 7000 meters. The mountain ranges mostly run from East to West and from Northeast to Southwest. There is a tendency to divide China into four regions; the North, South, Northwest and the Quinghei-Tibetan areas. Almost ninety five percent of the Chinese population lives in the North and South regions which are divided by the Qin Mountains and Huai River. The Northwest and Qinghei-Tibet regions make up fifty five percent of the land but have a much smaller population which is mainly comprised of ethnic groups.
