History has often painted Chinese women as subservient in society. Yet, this view is very narrow and without a true understanding of the position of women throughout the Chinese history.
Ancient China
Women of ancient China could not hold any position of power. They are portrayed as "objects" sold off into marriage. Their feet were bound to keep them from running off. In marriage ceremonies, they were always covered up, blinded to the events of the marriage until they were in their wedding bed.
Yet, this is a narrow view of the ultimate power they did have even during these times. While men ruled the world outside, women controlled the functions of the house. The wives of any man fell into rank within the household. The head wife could dictate who went where, how much money was spent on household needs, what education the children received, and ultimately the fate of the lives of the other women beneath her. Men were as bound by society as women in that they had little say in who they would marry. Normally, it would be the aunt or a matchmaker, normally an elderly woman of the village, who would arrange the favorable union of two families.

    Chinese History
The ancestors of human beings lived in China 8,000,000 years ago. Archaeologists found the remains of Ramapithecus man in Lufeng in Yunnan province. Yuanmou Man lived 1,000,000 years ago and Lantian Man, 600,000 to 700,000 years ago. The famous Peking Man is a mere youngster. He s only 400,000 to 500,000 years old. About 20,000 to 30,000 years ago, Liuchiang Man lived in Guangxi, near Guilin. Hotao Man lived in Inner Mongolia, and Upper Cave Man back in Zhoukoudian. Other milestones are the Lungshan Culture and Yangshao Culture in Henan of 5,000 t0 7,000 years ago. From about 1992 until 1997, the country was booming. China continued to buy airplanes and cars from the United States and its overheated economy triggered inflation and subsequent economic controls. The government announced a staff cutback of 25% and kept trying to get rid of highly subsidized state enterprises. Recently China was chosen to be the site of the 2008 summer Olympics, and won the right to the play-offs of the World Cup Soccer, two big feathers in its cap. Many people speak freely with foreigners now. I suggest you use discretion in advocating democracy, human rights, and the western point of view, unless you want to be booted out of the country. With care, there are many questions for you to ask: What about social security? Free health care? What is being done about AIDS, and illegal drugs? Legal rights? What is the effect of satellite television? China's 20 million Internet users? How is the government regulating these sources of foreign information?

in Forbidden City, Beijing China, one of the countries that can boast of an ancient civilization, has a long and mysterious history - almost 5,000 years of it! Like most other great civilizations of the world, China can trace her culture back to a blend of small original tribes which have expanded till they became the great country we have today. It is recorded that Yuanmou man is the oldest hominoid in China and the oldest dynasty is Xia Dynasty. From the long history of China, there emerge many eminent people that have contributed a lot to the development of the whole country and to the enrichment of her history. Among them, there are emperors like Li Shimin (emperor Taizong of the Tang), philosophers like Confucius, great patriotic poets like Qu Yuan and so on. Chinese society has progressed through five major stages - Primitive Society, Slave Society, Feudal Society, Semi-feudal and Semi-colonial Society, and Socialist Society. The rise and fall of the great dynasties forms a thread that runs through Chinese history, almost from the beginning. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China on October 1st, 1949, China has become a socialist society and become stronger and stronger.

Dynastic Rise and Fall
This theme of dynastic rise and fall resonates especially strongly in the Han, Tang, Song, Ming, and Qing dynasties. Many poets used allusions to patterns and events in past dynasties to comment on situations in their own times. Even today modern Chinese look back on their history as they attempt to make sense of their emerging nation today.
Aggression from Northern Aliens and Other Non-Han States
Relations, often antagonistic, between nomadic Turkic and Mongol peoples of the northern steppes and forests and the settled agriculturalists of the North China Plain go back far into antiquity. Among the northern invaders were the Xiongnu and Xianbei, who were followed in later centuries by the Qidan (Khitan), Jurched, Mongol, Turk, and Manchu (Manju) peoples. During periods of division, small states appeared and disappeared in northern China on the borders with the steppes. This was especially so between the Han and Tang dynasties. During this time many such states had Creole-cultures that combined steppe and sedentary cultures. Among these peoples were a group known as the Toba, whose descendants were among the founders of the great Tang dynasty. Xixia Tomb Besides the northern steppes and northeastern forests, alien states existed at times in other border areas. Among these were the Tibetan empire in the west, the Nanzhao in the southwest

Chinese history is long and exhaustive, and not easily discussed in brief essay. It is full of many interesting topics, ranging from military movements, to cultural movements, to agricultural and technological developments. Indeed, there are a plethora of topics to cover. This paper will briefly examine and discuss two disparate topics, both covered under Chinese history. The first section will look at some of the thoughts of China's intellectuals and philosophers by examining four passages. The second section will inspect some of the burial customs and archeological findings around tombs. When the authorities draft soldiers, a cripple can walk among them confidently flapping his sleevesà. Thus one whose form is crippled can nurture his body and live out the years Heaven grants him. Think what he could do if his virtue was crippled too! [Zhou was a king who was deposed in the past] Someone who does violence to the good we call a villain; someone who does violence to the right we call a criminal. A person who is both a villain and criminal we call a scoundrel. I have heard that a scoundrel Zhou has been killed, but have not heard that a lnrd was killed. Do not honor the worthy, and the people will not compete. Do not value rare treasures, and the people will not stealà Keep the people always without knowledge and without desires, for then the clever will not dare act. Engage in no action and order will prevail.

THE STIRRUP AND ITS EFFECT ON CHINESE MILITARY HISTORY
By Prof. Albert Dien
Lynn White, in his Medieval Technology and Social Change , offers the interesting hypothesis that the feudal class of the European Middle Ages derived ultimately from the stirrup. After the arrival of the stirrup in Europe by the eighth century, and the primacy this gave the horse and armor in warfare, the state made, land grants in return for the pledge to provide armored knights on horseback when called. The freeman with his battle-axe no longer was the mainstay of the military might of the state, though he was still subject to general muster. Charlemagne's attempt to raise horsemen by ordering the less wealthy to pool their resources was eventually unsuccessful because of the difficulties in administering such a program. The eventual result was the distribution of land to vassals on condition of knight's service; from this followed the creation of a fighting elite, which was to have a profound effect on Western society and history. In Europe the introduction of the stirrup and the resulting technology, that of the horse and armor, thus made fighting a matter of class. In China, the appearance of the stirrup also led to significant changes especially in the method of warfare and in military organization. The initial impact may well have been to produce a military elite, that of the tribesmen, Xianbei" and others, which ruled northern China from the fourth to the sixth centuries, but the effect on society was perhaps less pronounced because it was possible to administer effectively a program such as Charlemagne found impossible to implement. The very success of the new military institution, however, led to the disappearance of the tribesmen as the military elite. Thus the invention of the stirrup and its ultimate effect on warfare and society in China is a topic well worth examining.

Chinese History
When studying the political ideology of Sun Yat-sen and the drug trade policies of Lin Zexu , one is startled by how modern and applicable to today's world are their writings and viewpoints, however, we also see many difference between them. Sun Yat-Sen was a revolutionary responsible for organizing the Nationalist party in 1912, after the successful Revolution of 1911. In reality, his principles for revolution are amazingly comparable to the Western philosophy of a democratic republic. The three principles that form the core of Yat-sen's revolution ideology are as follows: the principle of nationalism; the principle of democracy; the principle of livelihood. Lin Zexu was an official under the rule of the Emperor Daoguang. His goal was to lead a campaign against the high level of opium addiction and export into the country. Through moral persuasion and coercion Zexu was responsible for trying to persuade Queen Victoria (whose country exported most of the opium into China) to prohibit her subjects from exporting opium into China. This analysis will demonstrate the arguments put forth by both men in an effort to demonstrate how their viewpoints are eerily akin to modern political ideologies and drug policies of today. Yet, we see many differences. For example, Lin Zexu came after the turmoil filled war-torn period of Sun Yat-sen. Further, they were different in that Sun Yat-sen was against the regime in power and Lin Zexu
