Origins of writing in China
Most linguists believe that writing was invented in China during the latter half of the 2nd millenium BC and that there is no evidence to suggest the transmission of writing from elsewhere. The earliest recognisable examples of written Chinese date from 1500-950 BC (Shang dynasty) and were inscribed on ox scapulae and turtle shells - "oracle bones". In 1899 a scholar from Beijing named Wang Yirong noticed symbols that looked like writing on some "dragon bones" which he had been prescribed by a pharmacy. At that time "dragon bones" were often used in Chinese medicine and were usually animal fossils. Many more "oracle bones" were found in the ruins of the Shang capital near Anyang in the north of Henan province. Further information about the oracle bones:

Origin of the Chinese Script (Hanzi de Qiyuan)
There have been various stories about the origin of the Chinese script, with nearly all ancient writers attributing it to a man named Cangjie. Cangjie, according to one legend, saw a divine being whose face had unusual features which looked like a picture of writings. In imitation of his image, Cangjie created the earliest written characters. After that, certain ancient accounts go on to say, millet rained from heaven and the spirits howled every night to lament the leakage of the divine secret of writing. Another story says that Cangjie saw the footprints of birds and beasts, which inspired him to create written characters. Evidently these stories cannot be accepted as the truth, for any script can only be a creation developed by the masses of the people to meet the needs of social life over a long period of trial and experiment. Cangjie, if there ever was such a man, must have been a prehistoric wise man who sorted out and standardized the characters that had already been in use.

Chinese Language
As the dominant language of East Asia, Chinese has greatly influenced the writing systems and vocabularies of neighboring languages not related to it by origin, such as the Japanese language, the Korean language, and the Vietnamese language. It has been estimated that until the 18th century more than half of the world's printed books were Chinese. General Characteristics Language Versus Dialects Development of the Language The modern Chinese dialects (from the 11th century AD) evolved from Old, or Archaic, Chinese (8th century to 3rd century BC), the sounds of which have been tentatively reconstructed. Although monosyllabic, Old Chinese was not wholly uninflected. The next stage of Chinese that has been carefully analyzed was Middle, or Ancient, Chinese (to about the 11th century AD). By this time the rich sound system of Old Chinese had progressed far toward the extreme simplification seen in the modern dialects. For instance, Old Chinese possessed series of consonants such as p, ph, b, bh

With Friends Comments ( Email Print Related Stories STAFF at a Chinese language newspaper in Brisbane, where a shot was fired through a window, believe its coverage of controversial issues in China may have motivated the attack.
Police told AAP that a ball bearing was fired through a window of the Epoch Times office in southeast Brisbane on Thursday at 3pm (AEST).
Epoch Times Queensland spokeswoman Margaret Ramsey said six staff members were in meeting in the office when a shot pierced a hole through the front window.
"It was big enough to make a hole in the window but because the glass was tinted, the window was shattered but did not crumble," she said in a statement.
Ms Ramsey said she believed that an airgun had been used in the attack.
She said no one was injured and two staff members chased the offenders' car, a black Toyota, up the street.
"It had to stop at the traffic lights so they got close enough to get the registration," Ms Ramsey said.
"Inside the car were two people who appeared to be of Chinese origin," she said.

These are not mutually intelligible , but for sociological and political reasons are considered a single Chinese language. Although the English word dialect is often used to translate the Chinese terms huà yǔ , or fāngyán , the lack of mutual intelligibility between the major (and many minor) varieties is at odds with the normal English use of the word dialect. The neologism topolect has been coined as a more literal translation of fangyan, but " variety " will be used here.
