Vibrio cholerae Serogroup O1
1. Name of the Organism:
Vibrio cholerae Serogroup O1 This bacterium is responsible for Asiatic or epidemic cholera. No major outbreaks of this disease have occurred in the United States since 1911. However, sporadic cases occurred between 1973 and 1991, suggesting the possible reintroduction of the organism into the U.S. marine and estuarine environment. The cases between 1973 and 1991 were associated with the consumption of raw shellfish or of shellfish either improperly cooked or re-contaminated after proper cooking. Environmental studies have demonstrated that strains of this organism may be found in the temperate estuarine and marine coastal areas surrounding the United States.

http://www.un.org/Pubs/CyberSchoolBus/special/health/disease/cholera.htm
CHOLERA
AGENT
Vibrio cholerae, a rod shaped bacterium.
DESCRIPTION
Produces an enterotoxin that causes a severe diarrhoea that can quickly lead to severe dehydration and death if treatment is not promptly given. Most persons infected with V. cholerae do not become ill, although the bacterium is present in their faeces for 7-14 days. When illness does occur, more than 90% of episodes are of mild or moderate severity and are difficult to distinguish clinically from other types of acute diarrhoea. Less than 10% of ill persons develop typical cholera with signs of moderate or severe dehydration.
TRANSMISSION
Cholera is spread by contaminated water and food. Sudden large outbreaks are usually caused by a contaminated water supply. Only rarely is cholera transmitted by direct person-to-person contact. In highly endemic areas it is mainly a disease of young children, although breastfeeding infants are rarely affected. Marine shellfish and plankton are the main reservoirs of V. cholerae. The El Tor strain can also survive in fresh water for long periods. Persons with asymptomatic infections play an important role in carrying V. cholerae from place to place, causing epidemics to spread.
SYMPTOMS
Most persons infected with V. cholerae do not become ill.Symptoms generally start with copious watery diarrhea, often accompanied by vomiting, leading to dehydration. This leads to intense thirst, difficulty swallowing, muscle cramps, weakness, and the appearance that one has simply dried up.

Vibrio cholerae : The bacterium that causes cholera (SEM image) ICD-10 ICD-O: ICD-9 OMIM MedlinePlus eMedicine med/351 DiseasesDB Cholera, also called Asiatic cholera or epidemic cholera, is a severe diarrheal disease that affects humans and is caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae Cholera is transmitted and spread to humans through consumption of water and food contaminated with the bacteria. Cholera is a fairly preventable disease, traced to both personal and human responsibility. Contamination with the bacteria Vibrio cholerae most often occurs due to a lack of proper sanitation (clean water). Infected human feces in the water supply can spread the disease, as can crops treated with infected human feces. Certain seafood, if eaten raw or undercooked and obtained from contaminated water supplies, can contain the bacteria as well. Rarely is cholera spread by human to human contact. Both personal actions (such as good hygiene, boiling and filtering water, care regarding foods consumed, etc.) and social actions (sewage treatment, water chlorination , warnings around contaminated water sources, etc.) can prevent disease outbreaks.

Zimbabwe and Region Appeal 2008
A severe outbreak of cholera and ongoing food shortages put millions of lives at risk across Zimbabwe and southern Africa. Thanks to the generosity of the public, our appeal raised £369,000. In Zimbabwe alone, cholera claimed more than 4,000 lives and the total number of cases was more than 87,900. That far surpassed the original worst-case scenario. Cholera also affected people in Angola, Mozambique and South Africa. In addition, Zimbabwe, along with other countries in the region, struggles to cope with the effects of HIV and AIDS. People living with HIV are particularly vulnerable to the risk of cholera. Although cholera is an easy disease to prevent and treat, it can also be deadly. You can lose 10 per cent of the water in your body every hour. Within six hours you're chronically dehydrated and within a day you can die. But prevention is not difficult and is based on basic hygiene such as washing your hands after using the bathroom. It was vital that we reached as many communities as possible with the messages on how to prevent cholera – especially because it is a cyclical problem which could easily flare up again when the next rains arrive.

Even now, it continues to show up occasionally in third-world countries ( See Also: England France , and Wales ) It is a vile and absolutely revolting disease believed by many to be improper mealtime conversation. Also, it is highly important and respected among most Viral Pathologists , as well as the CDC as it is their primary source of income.

Cholera was originally destined to be the fifth member of the Four Norsemen of the Apocalypse , but was cut from the part after a dispute with the director . As a struggling actor/harbinger of doom it moved to Los Angeles . After being scammed into paying its lifesavings on head shots it was forced to work as a waiter. Enraged at its worsening luck Cholera joined a street gang and cause mischief and terror in its new urban community. After an unknown period of time and for reasons the author cannot be bothered to write down, Cholera settled down, got married, had a few kids and got a gig in the business of mass eradication. Since then, Cholera has swept the planet, causing hundreds of millions of people to die tragic, humiliating, slightly hilarious, and always messy deaths.
