Apostolic Fathers
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search The Apostolic Fathers are a small number of Early Christian authors who lived and wrote in the second half of the 1st century and the first half of the 2nd century They are acknowledged as leaders in the early church , although their writings were not included in the New Testament . They include St. Clement of Rome St. Ignatius of Antioch , and St. Polycarp of Smyrna The label "Apostolic Fathers" has been applied to them since the 17th century to indicate that they were thought of as being of the generation that had personal contact with the Twelve Apostles . Thus they provide a link between the Apostles who knew Jesus of Nazareth and the later generation of Church Fathers Christian apologists , defenders of orthodoxy , and developers of doctrine

43. Letter To Diognetus
Introduction by Geoff Trowbridge.
http://www.maplenet.net/~trowbridge/diognetu.htm
The Letter To Diognetus Alternate title: The Epistle To Diognetus c. 100-150 C.E. The Epistle to Diognetus is a well-crafted argument extolling the virtues of Christianity over paganism. It is difficult to determine the date of the letter, for it was never referred to in any known ancient writings, but it obviously dates from a period when Christianity was still regarded as a "mystery" religion. Diognetus was apparently a highly regarded pagan, and it has been theorized that the name could be a familiar title of the Greek emperor Hadrian. If so, the writer was likely Quadratus, a missionary bishop. Other suggestions for the author have been Theophilus, Clement, Apollos, Marcion, Apelles or Aristides. In the sixteenth century, the writing was attributed to Justin Martyr, an assumption since dismissed. No extant copies of the original epistle exist, and it is quite possible that what are assumed to be the final two chapters are actually part of a different work. Introductory article by Joel Williams discusses themes and structure.

THE CHRISTIAN LIFE IN SECOND CLEMENT
Joel Stephen Williams
Second Clement is the oldest, complete Christian sermon, dating from the early second century and possibly having been written as early as 98 A.D. The author or authors are unknown. It was preserved with 1 Clement, but Clement of Rome is probably not the author. A Christian document such as 2 Clement which was written so early ought to be of great interest and benefit to Christians today. First Clement may give us some clues to the origin of 2 Clement. The church at Corinth was undergoing a power struggle and the elders had been deposed. Clement of Rome wrote a lengthy letter to the church in Corinth encouraging unity and giving support for the leadership of the original elders. Probably his letter was successful and the elders were reinstated. This set the stage for 2 Clement. Second Clement is a sermon, a homily, or an exhortation. It shows internal evidence that it was a sermon read by or on behalf of the reinstated elders to the congregation: "Let us think about paying attention and believing not only now, while we are being admonished by the elders..." (17.3; all translations by Lightfoot-Holmes [Baker], 1992). And again, "I am reading you an exhortation" (19.1). Second Clement has been outlined into three sections: (1) a theological section (1.1-2.7), (2) an ethical section (3.1-14.5), and (3) an eschatological section (15.1-18.2), followed by a short conclusion (Karl Paul Donfried, "The Theology of Second Clement,"

The Shepherd Of Hermas
(Translated by J.B. Lightfoot)
I Hermas - First Book: Visions
Vision I
  • The master, who reared me, had sold me to one Rhoda in Rome. After many years, I met her again, and began to love her as a sister.
  • After a certain time I saw her bathing in the river Tiber; and I gave her my hand, and led her out of the river. So, seeing her beauty, I reasoned in my heart, saying, "Happy were I, if I had such an one to wife both in beauty and in character." I merely reflected on this and nothing more.
  • After a certain time, as I was journeying to Cumae, and glorifying God's creatures for their greatness and splendor and power, as I walked I fell asleep. And a Spirit took me, and bore me away through a pathless tract, through which no man could pass: for the place was precipitous, and broken into clefts by reason of the waters. When then I had crossed the river, I came into the level country, and knelt down, and began to pray to the Lord and to confess my sins.
  • Now, while I prayed, the heaven was opened, and I see the lady, whom I had desired, greeting me from heaven, saying, "Good morrow, Hermas."

Is the Shepherd of Hermas Inspired Scripture?
    www.spotlightministries.org.uk
The Shepherd of Hermas stands as an important witness to early Christianity in Rome in the mid-second century.1 It reveals a form of popular early Christianity that includes a distinctly Jewish influence as it was lived out in the lives of ordinary people.2 Schaff observes that the book has been distinguished in its literary form from all other writings of the apostolic fathers and comments how modern readers have often compared it with Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress and Dante's Divina Commedia.3 In this examination of The Shepherd of Hermas this essay will seek to explain the contents and theology of this popular early Christian work, discuss and trace its position throughout the history of the Church, and finally identify the reasons why it was eventually excluded from the New Testament canon. The Contents and Theology of The Shepherd Another area of theological interest in the contents of The Shepherd concerns the Person of Jesus Christ. Parable 9 appears to identify "the Son of God" with the Holy Spirit before the incarnation, and seems to be stating that the Trinity came into being only after Christ's ascension into heaven.21 Osiek also points out how the manes 'Jesus' or 'Christ' never appear in the book.22 Instead, the words 'Son of God' appear (most frequently in the similitude's).23 On account of the absence of the names Jesus and Christ Osiek observes how some have doubted whether the work should even be considered as Christian.24 But despite the doubts of some there is ample indication that it is indeed a Christian writing. This is seen most notably in the parables about the Son of God and the references to baptism.25

    Christian Writing Contest
Athanatos Christian Ministries is proud to host a Christian writing contest. The home page for the contest is: http://www.christianwritingcontest.com/ The 2009 contest was a great success with more than 100 entries, literally from all around the world.   The 2010 contest began accepting entries on September 1st, 2009.  Winners will be decided in the winter with announcements coming in the spring of 2010. The Athanatos Christian Ministries (ACM) Christian Writing Contest is an outgrowth of ACM’s desire to develop a genre of fiction that might be called ‘literary apologetics.’ Apologetics is the defense of the Christian faith. Literary apologetics would be the use of fiction and Story to communicate the Gospel and the world view associated with it. In this way, many readers might receive the Christian message and consider it whereas they might distrust it if presented propositionally. ACM is an apologetics ministry, but one that encourages as many ‘methods’ as possible to defend the faith. The arts and literature are one area where the secular community used to reign supreme. However, this is changing, and ACM aims to facilitate that change. This writing contest is part of that strategy.

    The Didache
(D OCTRINE OF THE T WELVE A POSTLES A short treatise which was accounted by some of the Fathers as next to Holy Scripture . It was rediscovered in 1873 by Bryennios Greek Orthodox metropolitan of Nicomedia , in the codex from which, in 1875, he had published the full text of the Epistles of St. Clement . The title in the manuscript is Didache kyriou dia ton dodeka apostolon ethesin , but before this it gives the heading Didache ton dodeka apostolon . The old Latin translation of cc. i-v, found by Dr. J. Schlecht in 1900, has the longer title, omitting "twelve", and has a rubric Apostolorum . For convenience the contents may be divided into three parts: the first is the "Two Ways", the Way of Life and the Way of Death; the second part is a rituale dealing with baptism fasting , and Holy Communion ; the third speaks of the ministry. Doctrinal teaching is presupposed, and none is imparted. The Didache is mentioned by Eusebius after the books of Scripture Church History III.25.4 ): "Let there be placed among the spuria the writing of the Acts of Paul , the so-called Shepherd and the Apocalypse of Peter , and besides these the Epistle known as that of Barnabas , and what are called the Teachings of the Apostles , and also . . . the
