The Cooking Center
(photo courtesy of Microsoft clip art)
So far I have discussed three of the five centers Ms. Maxine Cornwell of my Learning Centers course suggests all centers have. There is the block center art center , and family center ; now on to the next: the cooking center.
I must confess our school does not have a cooking center. I like to do things that involve food with the children, but usually we don't cook anything. Our school used to have the most wonderful kitchen where we would make muffins, cookies, pizzas, and items for our Thanksgiving feast. The church then underwent a huge renovation and put in this huge state of the art kitchen for which you have to be certified to use. The stove and oven are like this huge apparatus that almost attacks you as you come in the kitchen(of course I am exaggerating), but it is definitely not user friendly. We have a small microwave in the room, but nothing else. I guess I better get cracking on ways to improve with incorporating this center.
Why a cooking center? At the beginning of the course Ms. Maxwell stated that all

    • Home Design Technology Children Green ... What Are You Looking Forward To? Christmas and Hanukkah are on their way, and since it is officially December, let's talk about holiday food! I love Christmas foods, especially the old-fashioned kind: fruitcake, plum pudding, and the leg of lamb my uncle roasts for our family gathering. Christmas candy gets me excited too, especially candy canes - proper old-fashioned peppermint canes, not the icky cherry flavored kind.
What are you looking forward to this season? Is there any treat that you simply will not make until the holidays officially arrive? Traditions and food go hand in hand, especially at this time of year, and it is great fun to get a glimpse into other people's holiday cultures. What do you bake? What did your mother and grandmother bake?

My mother always puts out a giant spread of various christmas sweets (sugar cookie cutouts, pfefferneuse, peanut brittle, windowpane cookies, etc), and year after year, the only dessert my family's interested in are her chocolate chip cookies. They're not festive in any way, but they're the finest cookie I've ever eaten. None of our family members or friends even touch the other offerings until all the chocolate chip cookies are depleted! posted by nadarine on December 1st 2006 at 5:30am
My mother and grandmother always baked very small spiced current cupcakes with a lemon (and rum? I don't even know) frosting. It takes about two bites to eat them and they are amazing and always carefully rationed. I imagine I could get the recipe and make it myself, but I think that might be a little like buying gifts for your own stocking. Some of the magic gets lost.

The real problem with Christmas holiday cooking is not Christmas dinner - it's a simple enough roast, after all - and if you want a guide to traditional 'turkey with all the trimmings' stick with Delia, she'll show you a good time.
No, the real problem is remembering that people expect to eat reasonably on other days, too. So when you have had the pea and ham soup and the turkey curry pie, what do you do next? The easiest way to please everybody, young and old, who have had a gut full of 'traditional fare', is to revert to pasta. So here are four classic pasta dishes that will also please the cook because they involve very little effort, and they are just like mamma used to make.
All the recipes serve four adults. To make sure everybody has enough, count on about 100g pasta per adult. Add the pasta to the sauce rather than the other way around, so that you can put less pasta in if you like it saucy (ooh-er missus). Happy end-of-holidays!
