    Teach the children...
Late one Christmas Eve, I sank back, tired but content, into my easy chair. The kids were in bed, the gifts were wrapped, the milk and cookies waited by the fireplace for Santa. As I sat back admiring the tree with its decorations, I couldn't help feeling that something important was missing. It wasn't long before the tiny twinkling tree lights lulled me to sleep. I don't know how long I slept, but all of a sudden I knew that I wasn't alone. I opened my eyes, and you can imagine my surprise when I saw Santa Claus himself standing next to my Christmas tree. He was dressed all in fur from his head to his foot just as the poem described him, but he was not the "jolly old elf" of Christmas legend. The man who stood before me looked sad and disappointed, and there were tears in his eyes. "Santa, what's wrong?" I asked, "Why are you crying?" "It's the children," Santa replied sadly. "But Santa, the children love you," I said.

My perplexed expression still showed in the near darkness. "Teach them the old meaning of Christmas ~ the meanings that Christmas nowadays has forgotten." "Teach the Children, the star was a heavenly sign of promise long ages ago. God promised a Savior for the world and a sign of the fulfillment of that promise was the great star of the East. The star now reminds us of God's love for mankind and of God fulfilling His promise. The countless shining stars at night ~ one for each man ~ now show the burning hope of all mankind." Santa gently laid the star upon the fireplace mantle and drew forth from the bag a glittering red Christmas ornament.

    The Twelve Days of Christmas
Dennis Bratcher The Twelve Days of Christmas is probably the most misunderstood part of the church year among Christians who are not part of liturgical church traditions. Contrary to much popular belief, these are not the twelve days before Christmas, but in most of the Western Church are the twelve days from Christmas until the beginning of Epiphany (January 6th; the 12 days count from December 25th until January 5th). In some traditions, the first day of Christmas begins on the evening of December 25th with the following day considered the First Day of Christmas (December 26th). In these traditions, the twelve days begin December 26 and include Epiphany on January 6. The origin and counting of the Twelve Days is complicated, and is related to differences in calendars, church traditions, and ways to observe this holy day in various cultures (see Christmas ). In the Western church, Epiphany is usually celebrated as the time the Wise Men or Magi arrived to present gifts to the young Jesus (Matt. 2:1-12). Traditionally there were three Magi, probably from the fact of three gifts, even though the biblical narrative never says how many Magi came. In some cultures, especially Hispanic and Latin American culture, January 6th is observed as Three Kings Day, or simply the Day of the Kings (Span:

How the Grinch Stole Christmas Synopsis
How the Grinch Stole Christmas synopsis of the classic christmas book. Dr. Seuss creates a fictional town of Who-ville. He uses the kids' book to teach the true meaning of Christmas. His whimsical animals and rhyming verse enhance the infant(baby), toddler, preschool and elementary kid, tween and teen story book.
Every Christmas the citizens of Who-ville exchange presents, eat a feast and sing Christmas carols. This happens Christmas after Christmas to the joy of the townspeople. There is one person who doesn’t feel the Christmas joy. He is the Grinch. The Grinch lives in a cave on Mt. Crumpit. The dog, Max, is his only friend.
Mean Grinch does not like Christmas. Evil Grinch wants to destroy Christmas. On Christmas Eve, he slips into Who-ville and steals every Christmas related item. Aha! Mr. Grinch is very wrong about the meaning of Christmas. A lack of material goods does not diminish the beauty and meaning of the season. The adults and kids of Who-ville hold hands in the town square and sing Christmas carols. Everyone is filled with Christmas joy and sing songs to the Heavens.
Grinch and kids learn Christmas is not about material processions, but the spirit of the Holiday season, the birth of Christ. No matter what one has, it is easy to celebrate His birth. The truth causes love to grow in the Grinch’s heart. He returns everything to Who-ville and accepts their invitation to stay for dinner.

They kept the food simple and were all able to focus on what is really important – enjoying each other’s company. There was not even a whinge about who is doing the clean up – between them they had the roster totally sorted!
There was a bit of nervousness that if they did the cooking too well they would be lumbered with the task every year. My collegue and I are currently teaching a Christmas Around the World Unit togehter to grades 1-3. We've talked about doing this for atleast two years, and this year just decided to go for it! We decided we had enough information to cover 10 different countries (Mexico, Sweden, England, Poland, Holland, Germany, Italy, France, Ireland, and the United States). We typed up a fact sheet for each country with basic facts about their Christmas traditions. Then copied coloring pages, map outlines, flags to color in, etc. for each country and bound them together into a book for each student. We had a Christmas tree pattern that had "Merry Christmas" written in several different languages on it that the students colored and then glued to construction paper for the cover. I am doing Christmas Traditions from around the world with my third graders this year. I have always done Christmas around the world, but seem to change it up every year. This year, will tomorrow, am starting with an introductory activity that will introduce the concept that there are many different ways that Christmas is celebrated around the world. It is a country search where they have to find the country names that go with the tradition in a search activity. Basically, I have all the answers and each student can get one answer from everybody in the classroom. So, since I can give one to each student, it creates a ripple effect with the information. Does that make sense? I have a cold and it's late! I will attach my search and directions...I typed them up today since I am sharing with m...

Christmas Teaches Skepticism Toward the World
(Image from artprints.com) Guest Blogger Rubel Shelly writes about What Christmas Teaches There is a wonderful line from the American scholar Stephen L. Carter that is appropriate to the Christmas season: "Religion is, at its heart, a way of denying the rest of the world." He is surely, astutely and gloriously correct Faith's view of this world is strangely skeptical. No, more than that. It is a posture of unequivocal distrust leading to rejection! When the world recites its mantras - you matter only if you are beautiful, the most important thing is money, winning is everything, Look Out for Number One - faith protests them all. It adopts a posture of doubt and incredulity. It lives in skepticism and disbelief. I refuse to believe that selfishness is acceptable or that it is permissible to resent another's good fortune. I will not swallow the world's way of thinkng in order to justify prejudice, aggression, and hatred. No believer can be anything but incredulous about the claim of this world that she is entitled to anything she can get her hands on or that he should feel no guilt about exploiting others.
