    Chronic fatigue syndrome - Causes
    Description
An in-depth report on the causes, diagnosis, and treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome.
    Causes:
Theories abound about the causes of chronic fatigue syndrome. No primary cause has been found that explains all cases of CFS, and no blood tests or brain scans can definitively diagnose the condition. Convergence of Factors. A number of experts believe that CFS develops from a convergence of conditions that may include the following:
    • Genetic factors Brain abnormalities A hyper-reactive immune system Viral or other infectious agents Psychiatric or emotional conditions
For example, most patients report some moderate-to-serious physical illness (such as a chronic viral infection) or emotional event (like an episode of depression) before CFS. Some experts theorize that such events, alone or in combination, may interact with certain neurologic and genetic abnormalities to trigger CFS. Still, it is not clear what sequence of events actually leads to the fatigue and other prominent symptoms of this disorder. Nor is there any specific brain or nervous system problem that experts can point to with assurance.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Chronic fatigue syndrome or CFS, is a more and more frequent diagnosis in the last few years. These people have such bone jarring fatigue that they are often unable to get through their daily routines. Many have become so debilitated that they are unable to work at any type of regular job and some cannot even take care of themselves.
While many theories have been proposed to explain the condition, most medical specialists agree that no one theory adequately explains the problem. No known treatment has proven to be effective.
I think I can explain the problem and offer constructive suggestions to help resolve it. I believe the chronic fatigue syndrome arises from a hormone imbalance . This problem affects many more women than men, but both groups have a few things in common. The problem arises in their thirties and forties in most cases. The women have noticed major hormone changes. This is quite natural, of course, when you stop to recall that average life expectancy for women was 40 years of age in l900. Through technical advances life expectancy for women has more than doubled in the last one hundred years. This isn’t an evolutionary change…it is a technical effect. We got rid of the Commanches, few people freeze or starve to death, and most importantly, antibiotics and medical advances are keeping more and more people alive longer. Life expectancy may have doubled, but Nature doesn’t recognize this. She still thinks we’re out of here by forty. Nature doesn’t want people who are about to die to have babies…who would raise them? As a result, She begins to turn our sex drive down in our twenties and it pretty much disappears in our thirties. Nature will continue to try to make some of our hormones as we age, but they will be essential hormones…not cortisol.

Hello and welcome. My name is Linda Sheppard. Having been a CFS sufferer for many years, I created this website in 2006 because I wanted to communicate with fellow sufferers, sharing information and knowledge of CFS and the various related illnesses . In a short time, the website has grown way beyond my original expectations, and the CFS/ME Support Forum now has getting on for one thousand members. So, what is CFS/ME? Think back to the worst dose of flu you’ve ever had - not a bad cold but the real thing. I’m talking about the sort of flu that makes it almost impossible to get out of bed in the morning - sometimes it IS impossible. I’m talking about the sort of flu that leaves you totally exhausted and ill when all you’ve done is walk a few yards. I’m talking about the sort of flu that overwhelms your joints and muscles with excruciating pain, the sort that fills your head with cotton wool so that if you try to read a book, the words mingle confusingly then swim off the page, leaving you feeling dizzy and sick. Imagine these symptoms not lasting seven or ten days as with the flu, but for year after miserable year. How would you cope?

  • Concurrently have four or more of the following symptoms: substantial impairment in short-term memory or concentration, sore throat, tender lymph nodes, muscle pain, multi-joint pain without swelling or redness, headaches of a new type, pattern or severity, unrefreshing sleep, and post-exertional malaise lasting more than 24 hours.
The symptoms must have persisted or recurred during six or more consecutive months of illness and must not have predated the fatigue.

This fatigue is not the kind of tired feeling that goes away after you rest. Instead, it lasts a long time and limits your ability to do ordinary daily activities. Symptoms of CFS include fatigue for 6 months or more and experiencing other problems such as muscle pain, memory problems, headaches, pain in multiple joints, sleep problems, sore throat and tender lymph nodes. Since other illnesses can cause similar symptoms, CFS is hard to diagnose. No one knows what causes CFS. It is most common in women in their 40s and 50s, but anyone can have it. It can last for years. There is no cure for CFS, so the goal of treatment is to improve symptoms. Medicines may treat pain, sleep disorders and other problems.
