Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
What is chronic fatigue syndrome?
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a disease that causes you to become so fatigued (tired) you can't perform normal daily tasks. This is called chronic fatigue. The main symptom of CFS is chronic fatigue that lasts more than 6 months. Physical or mental activity often make the symptoms worse, and rest usually doesn't improve the symptoms.
CFS is complicated and difficult to diagnose. Some people have a hard time accepting CFS as a disease. It's important to remember that your fatigue is real and that you can work with your doctor to improve your symptoms. Return to top

to the Lyndonville News web site www .DavidSBell. com The purpose of this site is to offer support, advice, recognition, and information to persons with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), fibromyalgia (FM), myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), and related, difficult to define, illnesses. The primary feature will be a newsletter, The Lyndonville News , which will hopefully appear every two months and will be free of charge. The medical literature on chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia has exploded in recent years, but in the process it has become bulky and difficult to follow. Meanwhile, the decreased public attention paid to CFS/FM/ME has led patients to feel abandoned and isolated, particularly since most medical providers are not familiar with the newer developments. Some patients may feel that there is even a worsening of the medical climate with increased disdain and neglect for their illness. It is my hope that the near future will bring dramatic changes to this climate. This newsletter is an attempt to increase awareness of CFS and FM through information that is based upon current medical literature. This web site is not a commercial venture to make money. To be diagnosed with this condition, your tiredness must be severe enough to decrease your ability to participate in ordinary activities by 50%. See also: Fatigue Alternative Names CFS; Fatigue - chronic; Immune dysfunction syndrome Causes, incidence, and risk factors The exact cause of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is unknown. Some researchers suspect it may be caused by a virus, such as Epstein-Barr virus or human herpes virus-6 (HHV-6). However, no distinct viral cause has been identified. Recent studies have shown that chronic fatigue syndrome may be caused by inflammation of pathways in the nervous system, and that this inflammation may be some sort of immune response or process. CFS may occur when a viral illness is complicated by a problem with the body's immune response. Other factors such as age, prior illness, stress, environment, or genetics may also play a role. CFS most commonly occurs in women ages 30 to 50.

The M.E. Society of America is an organization that seeks to promote understanding of the disease known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME/CFS), a multi-system disease adversely affecting the cellular mitochondria and the heart, brain, neuroendocrine, immune, and circulatory systems. M.E. was first described in the 1950’s following the recognition of many cases around the world, including a number of cases at the Royal Free Hospital in England. Many different viruses, bacteria, or toxins in combination with genetic factors may be involved in the etiology of the disease, which usually begins in childhood or early adulthood with an acute infection. Studying research-based subsets is the key to scientific progress in this area of investigation. In a number of publications, Dr. A. Melvin Ramsay outlined a definitional framework for M.E. that described abnormal muscle metabolism, circulatory impairment, and cerebral involvement.

What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)?
CFS can happen over time or come on suddenly. People who get CFS over time get more and more tired over weeks or months. People who get CFS suddenly feel fine one day and then feel extremely tired the next. A person with CFS may have muscle pain, trouble focusing, or insomnia (not being able to sleep). The extreme tiredness may come and go. In some cases the extreme tiredness never goes away. The extreme tiredness must go on for at least 6 months before a diagnosis of CFS can be made. CFS is sometimes called chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS). It is also sometimes called myalgic encephalomyelitis (mye-AL-jik en-SEFF-ah-loh-mye-LYE-tiss), or ME.
