SCIENTOLOGY
(THE CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY)
Scientology, one of the genuinely new religions to originate in the United States in the twentieth century, was founded by L. Ron Hubbard (1911-1986). The Church of Scientology believes "that Man is basically good, that he is seeking to survive, [and] that his survival depends on himself and upon his fellows and his attainment of brotherhood with the universe" (from Church of Scientology's statement of beliefs). Hubbard's extensive writings and taped lectures constitute the beliefs and the basis for the religion's practices. The aims of Scientology are "A civilization without insanity, without criminals and without war, where the able can prosper and honest beings can have rights, and where man is free to rise to greater heights." L. Ron Hubbard grew up mostly in Montana, but also lived in Nebraska; Seattle, Washington; and Washington, DC . As a child he read extensively, and by the age of twelve was studying the theories of Freud. As a teenager Hubbard traveled throughout Asia and the East, continuing his studies of philosophy, religion, and human nature. In 1929 he returned to the United States and in 1930 enrolled in George Washington University, studying mathematics, engineering, and nuclear physics. Hubbard wanted to answer the basic questions relating to the human being's nature, and decided to do further research on his own. To finance this, he began a literary career in the early 1930s, publishing numerous stories and screen plays in various genres, including adventure, mystery, and science fiction. Hubbard continued his travels and then served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was injured during the war, and used some of his own theories concerning the human mind to assist in his healing.

The materials of Dianetics and Scientology comprise the largest body of information ever assembled on the mind, spirit and life, rigorously refined and codified by L. Ron Hubbard through five decades of research, investigation and development. The results of that work are contained in hundreds of books and more than 3,000 recorded lectures. The books and lectures that follow form the foundation upon which The Bridge to Freedom is built. They are presented in the sequence Mr. Hubbard wrote or delivered them. In many instances, Mr. Hubbard gave a series of lectures immediately following the release of a new book to provide further explanation and insight of these milestones. Through monumental restoration efforts, those lectures are now available. While L. Ron Hubbard’s books contain the summaries of breakthroughs and conclusions as they appeared in the developmental research track, his lectures provide the running day-to-day record of research and explain the thoughts, conclusions, tests and demonstrations that lay along that route. In that regard, they are the complete record of the entire research track, providing not only the most important breakthroughs in Man’s history, but the

      Church of Scientology tax exempted
November 9, 2009 The Labour Government is introducing a series of laws that will see tax breaks being offered to the British missions of the Church of Scientology. While thousands of UK companies will be facing higher tax bills starting in April and homeowners are expecting steeper council taxes, the wealthy religious organisation will be exempt. The modifications which are being pushed through via a Bill authored by Equality Minister Harriet Harman, will, for the first time, see the Church of Scientology be viewed on equal footing as the Roman Catholic Church and the Church of England. Under British legislation, all religious entities benefit from a business tax exemption while council tax discounts are given for the homes of religious leaders. Under British law, a building must be the venue used for worshipping a God or deity, but not a philosophy, in order to be considered as a place of religious worship. But the Equality Bill has some small print which asks councils to protect all religious or philosophical beliefs from local taxes just as a new public-sector equality duty forces authorities to promote equality of those who hold philosophical beliefs and stops them from any discrimination against all philosophical beliefs. The Church of Scientology thus would qualify for complete exemption from business taxes on public venues while residential property used by Scientologist Church leaders would see council tax discounts.

The Church of Scientology International was founded by L. Ron Hubbard in 1954. Based principally on his book, Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health (1950), Hubbard created a “religious” institution to promote his unique psychological theories. Organizations associated with Scientology include Applied Scholastics, Association for Better Living and Education (ABLE), Citizens Commission on Human Rights, Concerned Businessmen of America, Hubbard Dianetics Centers, Narconon/Criminon, Religious Technology Center, Sterling Management Systems, and The Way to Happiness Foundation. Publishing ventures include New Era Publications, Bridge Publications, Inc., and Freedom magazine.
The Church of Scientology sprouted from the creative genius of Lafayette Ronald Hubbard. Born in 1911, he spent much of his childhood on his grandfather’s Montana ranch while his parents served abroad in the U.S. Navy. During the 1920’s, Hubbard started to visit his parents in Asia, where he was introduced to Taoism, Buddhism, and other eastern philosophies.
Hubbard later developed a career as a science fiction writer and claimed to have explored the world. He allegedly received near fatal wounds in World War II, and developed his unique theories of science and philosophy while healing. These “discoveries” were later revealed to the public in his book
