The Presentation of the Augsburg Confession
The Cornerstone of the "Mountain Church" in Seiffen - 1779
(Norman Adams Photos)
"To the Glory of God and the Salvation of Man" - These words were engraved in golden letters on the cornerstone of the Mountain Church in the Saxon village of Seiffen in the year of our Lord 1779. In many respects, the design of our sanctuary has been inspired by this classic Lutheran Church. Our earnest and heartfelt prayer as we dedicate our new church today is that all may be done "To the Glory of God and the Salvation of Man." May the Gospel resound in this House of God with power from on high. May His Word ever be preached among us in all of its saving truth and purity. May the Sacraments which our gracious Lord has established always be rightly administered in our congregation for the forgiveness of our sins and strengthening of our faith. We dedicate our church today, in the year of our Lord 2000 "To the Glory of God and the Salvation of Man." Church Architecture and Theology
"Architecture for churches is a matter of Gospel. A church that is interested in proclaiming the Gospel must also be interested in architecture, for year after year the architecture of the church proclaims a message that either augments the preached Word or conflicts with it. Church architecture cannot, therefore, be left to those of refined tastes, the aesthetic elite, or even the professional architect. If the Gospel of Christ is worthy or accurate verbal proclamation, week by week, it is also worthy of faithful architectural proclamation, where its message speaks year after year...It is most unfortunate that many people understand the word architecture solely in terms of style...A church is a place where God’s people gather together to worship Him, and how they worship, as well as what they believe, is either reinforced or undermined by the architecture. Church architecture is therefore first and foremost a matter of theology rather than a matter of style."

Hawksmoor's London Churches: Architecture and Theology
Anglican Theological Review Summer 2002 by Zahl, Paul F M
Hawksmoor's London Churches: Architecture and Theology. By Pierre de la Ruffiniere du Prey. Chicago and London: The University of Chicago Press, 2000. xix 179 pp. $37.50 (cloth); $25.00 (paper). Between 1712 and 1731 Nicholas Hawksmoor, the great student of Sir Christopher Wren, created six Anglican churches in London that define the word "eclectic." Taking elements from classical temples, from fanciful reconstructions of Solomon's temple, and from early Christian edifices as they were thought to have looked, Hawksmoor designed six neo-Byzantine buildings of pure form and abstraction. His six churches are unique in the world, more subtle than "wedding cakes" such as St. Bride's, Fleet Street or St. Michael's, Charleston, and strangely more impressive even than the great St. Martin-in-the-Fields or St. Paul's, Fulton Street in New York. But there's more! Hawksmoor sought an "early Christian" purity and simplicity that united "high church" interests and "low church" principles for the sake of reaching the nation. This aspiration of the baroque genius architect is documented by Pierre du Prey in his splendid book, which is also precisely and comprehensively illustrated.

    67. CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Choir (In Architecture)

    Choir
There is much ambiguity about the terms choir and presbytery. Strictly speaking, the choir is that part of the church where the stalls of the clergy are. The term is often loosely used for the whole of the eastern arm, including the choir proper, sanctuary , retro-choir, etc. At Westminster Abbey the stalls are in the east nave and therefore no part of the choir is in the eastern arm. At Canterbury the stalls are in the eastern arm and the choir occupies its western bays, i.e. the space between the crossing and the sanctuary . In non-collegiate churches the eastern arm is called the chancel , the eastern portion of which is the presbytery or sanctuary . In the earliest Christian churches , e.g. Santa Maria Maggiore at Rome , there were but two parts, a nave and sanctuary ; there was no architectural choir . The sanctuary occupied the apse , and the apse was joined immediately to the nave , or, in the double-aisled basilicas of the fourth century, such as those of St. Peter and St. Paul at Rome , to the transept ; there was no interposition of a choir between nave and apse . The choir was simply the east part of the nave symbol of immortality ), lions

    Sanctuary
The space in the church for the high altar and the clergy . It is variously designated apsis or concha (from the shell-like , hemispherical dome ), and since the Middle Ages especially it has been called "choir", from the choir of singers who are here stationed. Other names are presbyterium, concessus chori, tribuna or tribunal, hagion, hasyton sanctum, sanctuarium From the architectural standpoint the sanctuary has undergone manifold alterations. In Christian antiquity it was confined to the apse , into the wall of which the stone benches for the clergy were let after the fashion of an amphitheatre, while in the middle rose up the bishop's chair ( cathedra ). It would however be wrong to believe that this ancient Christian sanctuary had always a semicircular formation, since recent investigations (especially in the East ) have revealed very various shapes. Over a dozen different shapes have already been discovered. In Syria the semicircular development advances very little or not at all from the outer wall, while beside it are situated two rooms which serve respectively for the offering prothesis ) and for the clergy diaconicum ).
