The eggs are laid in twigs. The newlyhatched young drops to the ground and, burrowing into it, feeds by sucking the juices of roots. It lives in this way for some time (the duration depending on the species), its appearance changing but slightly. Finally, it digs out by means of its enlarged front feet, crawls on a tree-trunk or some such thing, splits down the back and liberates the adult.
The adult male "sings," often very loudly and shrilly, by vibrating membranes stretched over a pair of sound-chambers situated, one at each side, near the base of the abdomen.
The Periodical Cicada or Seventeen-year Locust Thirteen-year Locust in the South - is Magicicada (formerly Tibicina septendecim
The adult has the same general shape as its relatives but its "music boxes" at the base of the abdomen have no cover and its eyes and the principal veins of the wings are red. There is nothing mystical in this color or in the W on the wings, although the sudden appearance of the adults in large numbers has been supposed to foretell war.
For about sixteen years, in the North, the young suck at the roots of plants. Toward the end of this period scalelike rudiments of wings appear. In the spring of the 17th year the nymph makes its way to the surface of the ground by a smooth, firm tunnel.

A Quick Guide to the Cicada Insect
While their name may not very familiar to people, the loud clicking and buzzing noises made by the cicada insect are unmistakable.  In fact, some of these bugs can be heard up to one mile away.  Unique creatures; cicadas and their habits are the source of fascination for many people.
Types of cicada
Though the name “cicada” seems inclusive, there are actually two types of the insect.  Under these two types, several thousand species branch out.   They are categorized according to their reproductive habits.  The first type is termed as periodic; they seem to disappear from existence for a number of years, only to reappear in huge numbers in a single year.  One species has been coined the “17 year locust” because of this behavior, even though it may not be 17 years between appearances and the cicada has no relationship to the locust.  The second type is an annual cicada since some of the adults appear every year.  One of the annuals is termed as the “dog day” cicada, due to its emergence during the hot, lazy “dog days” of summer.
Cicada features
Winged insects with large, red eyes, the cicada is easily identifiable.  The wings are transparent sheets, paned with dark brown veins.  The large bulbous head is a good match for the short chunky body, with four grasping legs that assist the insect in moving along and holding fast to branches and stems.  More than its appearance, however, is the highly recognizable sounds they emit.  Males who are trying to attract females send buzzing noises into the atmosphere by vibrating the membranes on their abdomens.  Females respond by emitting their own piercing calls.  Species to species will have variances of the strengths and tones of their calls; some are shriller, others carry a musical resonance.  Together, the cacophony of clicking and buzzing can build to an overall hum that fully disrupts all other sounds of nature.

There are about 2,500 species of cicada around the world, and many remain unclassified. Cicadas live in temperate to tropical climates where they are among the most widely recognized of all insects, mainly due to their large size and remarkable acoustic talents. Cicadas are often colloquially called locusts, although they are unrelated to true locusts , which are a kind of grasshopper . They are also known as "jar flies" and, regionally, as July flies

Cicada 2011: Control of Periodical Cicada Insect
Cicada bugs, also called the "17 year locust", Cicada insects or bugs, arrive by the millions, and can do damage to a variety of young trees and shrubs in your yard. The 2011 Cicada infestation affects a small area of the U.S. For the next several years, there will be an annual emergence somewhere in the country. See the Cicada Brood map link at the bottom of this page) When a Cicada emergence hits an area, the best protection is pest netting with a 1/4" mesh. Buy Pest Netting Most, but not all years, a Cicada brood hatches, affecting anywhere from a small area to several states or more. When a particular brood matures and emerges, it is usually in many millions of insects. Fortunately, their adult life span above ground is very brief, lasting about four to six weeks. Cicada is a flying, plant sucking insect that emerges in periodic cycles. Cicada nymphs suck juices from roots of plants. Egg laying females cause significant damage to trees during their brief, adult stage. They are not harmful to humans. Counter to some rumors, they do not bite, nor do they often land on a human or animal. Types of Cicada There are two basic types of Cicadas:
Periodic, 2-8 year cycle

Periodical cicada FAQ with quick answers to some common questions. What is a periodical cicada? Cicadas are flying, plant-sucking insects of the Order Hemiptera; their closest relatives are leafhoppers, treehoppers, and fulgoroids. Adult cicadas tend to be large (most are 25-50mm), with prominent wide-set eyes, short antennae, and clear wings held roof-like over the abdomen. Cicadas are probably best known for their conspicuous acoustic signals or "songs", which the males make using special structures called tymbals, found on the abdomen. There may be as many as 3000 different cicada species worldwide. All but a few cicada species have multiple-year life cycles, most commonly 2-8 years (de Boer and Duffels 1996). In most cicada species, adults can be found every year because the population is not developmentally synchronized; these are often called "annual" cicada species. In contrast, populations of the

Insect Development
The life cycle of a species serves as a unit of biological time. From the development of the eggs in the female and the sperm in the male and their union there is a series of changes, often involving several unlike forms which lead to adulthood and the production of progeny for the next generation. This sequential growth from the fertilized egg to a sexually mature adult constitutes the life cycle of the individual. There is great variability among insects in the length of the life cycle, from a few days to many years, in the method of development, in the appearance and habits of the stages leading to adulthood and even between successive life cycles.
The Egg
Insect eggs are of many shapes and sizes and are deposited by the females in various locations and ways; they may be smooth ellipses or be ribbed or sculptured in various ways; others may be provided with processes of different kinds to ensure survival. The length of time required for hatching varies with each insect species and is affected by many external factors such as temperature and moisture.
