return to insect facts menu Cicada facts Cicadas spend most of their lives as nymphs underground. This may be as long as 17 years. Adult cicadas most live 2 to three weeks but some live only for a day or two or less.
It is easy to tell the sex of cicada adults. Females have blade-like ovipositors visible on the bottom surface of the abdomen, and the males do not. Males possess a pair of sound-producing, or "singing", organs located on the sides of the first abdominal segment.
The male cicada makes the loudest sound in the insect world; they have their own built-in sound system.
The sound made by the male cicada can carry for up to a mile.
The sound is made by vibrating the ribbed plates in a pair of amplifying cavities at the base of the abdomen.
Each sound organ consists of a large plate-like structure, the operculum, which covers a cavity containing a white or yellowish membrane and an oval, ribbed, drum-like structure called a timbal. Timbals are vibrated by strong muscles to produce the cicada song.
Each species has its own distinctive call and only attracts females of its own kind even though rather similar species may co-exist.

The Buzz On Cicada
It's a short season in the sun for this buzzing insect.
by CHARLES FONAAS Who among us hasn't heard that persistent hum in the trees on a warm summer afternoon? Most everyone knows the sound and many know the source, but few take the time to see the noisy little buzzer who simply insists on being heard. Although more than nine species of cicadas are found in Wisconsin, the one most frequently encountered is Tibicen canicularis , sometimes called the Dogday Harvestfly . Although it might look a bit fearsome to the person lucky enough to see one up close, it is completely harmless; buzzing is the way it attracts a mate. The cicada looks like a fly to some, but it is actually closely related to the much smaller aphids and leafhoppers. The droning sound is produced by a pair of drumskin-like organs on the base of the abdomen. These vibrate at a high speed thus buzzing when the male cicada calls for a mate usually between mid-July and mid-September. Once mating is complete, the female slits an opening in a small branch or twig with her ovipositor and deposits a small cluster of eggs. When the eggs hatch, the young nymphs drop to the ground, burrow down and begin feeding by sucking nourishing juices from the tree roots. The nymphs remain in their subterranean (underground) world for approximately two years before they are ready to emerge into daylight and begin their adult lives. Other cicada species have a 4-17 year life cycle.

Insect Sounds
Here are some insect sounds. Many of these I will have classified by family only, since I have not been able to find each of them so they can be classified. If you know what one is, or if you feel I've mis-classified one, please let me know. All are Windows wav files, and all have been edited for file size and clarity. More exacting sound collectors may contact me for larger, unedited versions of these sounds. Costa Rican Insect sounds are on the Costa Rica page, below. A Field Cricket Gryllus pennsylvanicus ) sings to me from my compost pile - he loves it in there! Examination of the wave or spectrum reveals that each chirp is actually three sound pulses! (78K) An Acridid Grasshopper keeps me company while I sit observing at Tavasci Marsh in the early morning. This guy was a small "short-horned" grasshopper, which are characterized by their short antennae and severely sloping "foreheads". He was about 3/4 inch long. (125K) Pallid-winged Grasshoppers Trimerotropis pallidipennis ) are common Summer Grasshoppers around Arizona (and almost everywhere else). They're the small, brown and tan mottled grassshopper you probably used as bluegill bait when you were a child (didn't everyone?). This is the sound of their flight - it will be familiar to you, for sure! (105K)

Winged creatures are a popular theme in origami. This winged, cicada insect is a traditional origami project and can be completed in just a few minutes. You can display your finished cicada as part of a garden-themed nook or room. You can use any square of paper for your cicada. Practice folding this model with plain, white copy or typing paper first. After you have achieved the desired look, then use appropriately colored and patterned paper. Fold your cicada from either a realistically colored paper or any color of your choosing. You can use two-sided origami paper if you like (white on one side, colored on the other). This paper is very convenient in that it comes pre-cut into squares and is available in wide variety of colors and patterns. It is relatively expensive, though. You could get a similar look from a heavier weight gift wrapping paper. Check out local discount paper stores for bargains, as well. Beside paper, all you need is a place to work. A hard, flat surface is recommended. Avoid soft or cushioned surfaces such as carpets, pillows, or beds. Your creases will be sharper if you fold against a table or hardback book. To make creases even sharper, run a ruler edge or pencil over each one as you work.

[To contact us] What is a periodical cicada? Cicadas are flying, plant-feeding insects of the Order Homoptera, which also contains groups such as the leafhoppers, aphids, and scale insects. Adult cicadas tend to be large (most are 25-50mm), and most North American species have clear wings, held rooflike over the abdomen. Cicadas have conspicuous long-range acoustic signals produced by specialized abdominal structures called tymbals; in most species only the males have these structures. Most cicadas are active only during the day and/or evening. So far as is known, all cicadas have multiple-year life cycles (4-17 years). Cicadas in which almost all of the individuals in a given location mature into adults in the same year are periodical . Most cicada species are non-periodical, meaning that some adults are present in most or all years, while others show partial periodicity. The most prominent and best-studied periodical cicadas are six species from eastern North America belonging to the genus Magicicada three species with 13-year life cycles, and three with 17-year cycles. The three 17-year species are generally northern in distribution, while the 13-year species are generally southern and midwestern.

Those placemats in your local Chinese restaurant will tell you 1999 is the year of the hare, or rabbit. For many West Virginians, however, 1999 probably seems more like the year of a certain noisy insect-the periodical cicada. After spending nearly two decades living in underground tunnels sucking sap from the roots of trees and shrubs, millions of cicadas emerged from the ground in May and June. According to the WVU Extension Service, the irksome insects responded to their internal 17-year alarm clocks in 40 counties in the Mountain State this year, as well as in parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Maryland. In their few weeks above ground, periodical cicadas mate, lay their eggs, and then die. Although they have a unique appearance-adult cicadas are one and one-half to two inches long and black with orange or orange-brown body stripes and red eyes and legs-the periodical cicada is best known for its incessant high-pitched droning, a sound many find annoying or even unbearable. The males of the species are the culprits. Females are voiceless. Morning to night, the males produce five different mating sounds, the most common one sounding like "farro." Another common noise produced by the insects is a whirring sound.
