3. The American Civil War Naval War
A great place to start your study of the Civil War Navies. Naval War, An Overview A brief look at just what was happening during this part of the Civil War.
http://www.civilwarhome.com/navalwar.htm
The American Civil War
"Naval War" This portion of the Home of the Civil War website is designed to provide the reader with a brief insight into a little known aspect of the late Rebellion, The Naval War. While this portion of the Rebellion is little discussed, both the Federal and the Confederate Navies played a vital part in the war. The early establishment of the blockade and Farragut's capture of New Orleans not only brought about the economic strangulation of the South but also killed any hope the Confederates had of French intervention . The Navy also had a critical role in the strategy that split the Confederacy by capturing the line of the Mississippi.
In 1861 the US Navy was in a demoralized condition with its 1,457 officers and 7,600 men scattered all over the globe. Less than half of its 90 ships were ready for active service. Of its meager officer personnel, the following defected to the South: 16 captains, 34 commanders, 76 lieutenants, and 111 regular and acting midshipmen (Miller, VI, 78). Abandonment of the Norfolk Navy Yard, 20-21 Apr.'61, resulted in the loss of 11 ships and 3,000 pieces of ordnance. After Gideon Welles was appointed Sec. of the Navy, he and his assistant Sec., Gustavus V. Fox, built the US Navy in four years from 23 to 641 ships of all types. Chronology of Naval Actions A chronological listing of important naval engagements. Not intended as a complete listing of all of the actions.

The majority of these warships were buid during the war, including the entire run of destroyer escorts. Whereas destroyer production in the years of 1932 to 1939 had usually been on the order of a squadron per year, in other words eight ships, by the 1940s the dire threat of war had necessitated an increase in destroyer production. While at the Navy's storage facilities the old World War I-built "flushdecker" destroyers were demothballed and modernized, modified and renovated, the many yards that were capable of destroyer production built new warships many times as powerful as the "flushdeckers". These ships, which would serve as fleet escorts, as convoy escorts, as screening ships and patrol ships, as independent strike forces and gunfire support ships, as radar pickets and as submarine hunters, were certainly the most versatile element of the fleet. The oldest American destroyer to do so was a part of the class of 1000 ton four-stack destroyers that were the predecessors of the flushdeckers. Already, these ships, whose design had evolved from smaller and less capable ships, mounted all the armament that would go into the flushdeckers, but had a different layout. Although successful and not much less capable than the later ships, the giant size of the flush-decker production program made their retention unneccessary.

It was launched on September 29, 1863 and Commissioned the USS Kansas on December 21, 1863 at Philadelphia with Lt. Comdr. Pendleton G. Watmough originally in command.; designated ship number 62. It’s length was 129' 6", its beam was 29', its draft was 10' 6", it did 12 knots, had a complement of 108 men, was armed with one 150-pounder rifle, two 12-pounder rifles, two 20-pounder Dahlgren rifle and two 9" Dahlgren smoothbores. Some claim Waters also served in the U.S. Army, but an exhausting search of all known records have failed to confirm that. Such a search has indicated, however, that he did serve in some capacity under a number of assumed names, including William Hudson and John Black. It is therefore possible that Waters may have indeed served in other branches of the military for undetermined short periods. William Waters was discharged at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 25, 1864, wherein he travelled west and was engaged in gold mining for several years, before leaving for England in 1868. Waters lived in Sunderland, Durham, England until 1874, during which he married Meggy Golders in 1870, then he moved to Manchester, England and lived until 1882.

The first thought for many when they think of the Civil War is one of massive armies squaring off at places such as Shiloh or Gettysburg. In addition to the struggle on land, there was an equally important battle occurring on the waves. Union warships encircled the Southern coast, economically choking the Confederacy and depriving its armies of much needed munitions and supplies. To counter this, the small Confederate Navy unleashed a swarm of commerce raiders with the goal of damaging Northern trade and drawing ships away from the coast. On both sides new technologies were developed including the first ironclads and submarines. The Civil War was truly a pivotal moment in naval warfare as it signaled the end of wooden sailing ships, confirmed steam power as a means of propulsion, and gave rise to armored, ironclad warships. This gallery will provide an overview of some of the ships used during the war.
