My great-uncles, the Chambers boys , fought in the 7th West Virginia on East Cemetery Hill at Gettysburg and participated in the famed charge on the Sunken Road at Antietam. Another great-uncle, Aaron Barnhill , was in the 141st Ohio, a National Guard regiment that served for 100 days in the summer of 1864 when the U.S. War Department enrolled tens of thousands of men for temporary duty for an all-out push to win the war. These "Hundred Days Men" in the 141st served on garrison duty at Charleston, West Virginia, allowing the release of veteran troops to man the front lines. The Civil War The American Civil War began on April 12, 1861 and ended on April 9, 1865. The Civil War started for many different reasons. One of the larger ones, however, was that abolitionists (people completely against slavery that felt it should be stopped immediately) were on the rise in the North. The majority of the North felt it should be stopped while the majority of the South wanted to preserve their way of life. This (and some other reasons) created tension and led to the Confederacy's attack of Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. The majority of the Southern states seceded from the Union and formed their own government called the Confederacy. Many lives were lost during the war. One in every fifty Americans died. Both sides were strong and put up an amazing fight. Soon what was left of the Confederacy (led by General Robert E. Lee) surrendered to the North at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. The Pittard Collection (Homer and Mabel) Civil War—People Series: This series in the Pittard Collection primarily includes research materials on Rutherford County individuals who played a role in the Civil War or of soldiers who came to Murfreesboro to fight in the Battle of Stones River. There are copies of research on individuals, research notes, or copies of letters written by specific people. The most significant items in this series relate to Major Charles Anderson and Dewitt Smith Jobe . Charles Anderson served in the Civil War but the original documents in this collection pertain to activities in the regional Confederate Veterans Association. Also in this series is the personal correspondence of Dewitt Jobe, a local man who served as a Confederate Scout and was killed by a Union scouting party just outside of Triune, Tennessee. The Womack Collection (Bob) The Womack Collection has numerous photocopies and research materials related to people who were involved in the Civil War. Some of the people included in the files are Confederate and Union soldiers, Civil War widows, and families.
