Henryk Gorécki dies aged 76
The Polish composer Henryk Gorécki died this morning in Katowice at the age of 76. The composer had been unwell for some time and his death leaves a number of major projects unfinished. Like many Eastern European composers of his generation, Gorécki gradually turned to religious themes in his work, but while his later music can be considered minimalist, it is never ambient, and regularly employs harsh, abrasive textures. It is ironic then that Gorécki will be best remembered for his 3rd Symphony of 1976, a work of lamentation based on texts connected with concentration camps in Poland. A recording of the symphony by Dawn Upshaw, David Zinman and the London Sinfonietta became a worldwide hit in the 1990s. Gorécki continued composing up until his death. The premiere of a 4th Symphony by the London Philharmonic had been scheduled for October 2010, but had to be cancelled as the composer was too ill to complete it. He leaves a large number of unfinished scores, and reports suggest that he has left instructions for them to be destroyed after his death. Brinkburn Priory Northumberland
The Brinkburn Music Festival - held on the weekends of 2 - 4 and 9 - 11 July 2010 was a great success despite the disruption that was caused by the events in Rothbury between the two weekends.
One of our choirs unfortunately dropped out of the final Sunday's performance of The Messiah but the brilliant Tees Valley Choir were still with us and we had a rousing finale to the festival.
Thank you to everyone concerned, organisers, performers and audience alike for helping make the 2010 festival a resounding success.
If you haven't been to Brinkburn Music Festival yet, we hope that this site will give you a flavour of the festival and what we have to offer. Our festival of classical music is held at Brinkburn Priory in the heart of Northumberland for two weekends in July each year when we are privileged to welcome festival goers from across the UK, Europe and beyond. Many of our long distance visitors are festival regulars. Some make the trip for a single concert, many more make an occasion of it by taking the opportunity between the two weekends to spend time exploring the beauty and history of Northumberland. There is much to see, a host of welcoming places to stay and splendid music to enjoy. You will find us a friendly and welcoming festival. We are small enough to care - and we take pride in going the extra mile to make your visit enjoyable

Composers
Composers don't only have a way of expressing themselves through music, they also do so beautifully in words. Here is my Top 10 list of Music Quotes by Famous Composers. I hope you'll find inspiration in their words.
1. Johann Sebastian Bach - "There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself."
2. Ludwig van Beethoven - "To play without passion is inexcusable!"
3. Johannes Brahms - "Without craftsmanship, inspiration is a mere reed shaken in the wind."
