When I began to write my history I was inclined to count these legends as foolishness, but on getting as far as Arcadia I grew to hold a more thoughtful view of them, which is this. In the days of old those Greeks who were considered wise spoke their sayings not straight out but in riddles, and so the legends about Cronus I conjectured to be one sort of Greek wisdom. In matters of divinity, therefore, I shall adopt the received tradition. Pausanias, Description of Greece

About the Project
This site is designed to draw together the ancient texts and images available on the Web concerning the major figures of Greek and Roman mythology. We were most interested in bringing together the ancient sources and illustrations, but have included some Renaissance images that were just too good to leave out. The site is primarily intended for the use of Greek and Roman Mythology students at the University of Victoria, but feel free to look around!

CLASSICAL MYTHOLOGY
Monsters in classical mythology are typically part animal and part human, or else they constitute a collection of animal graftings. They are not really horror monsters, just unpleasant or nasty afflictions sent by the gods. They often do no more than throw into relief the heroism of the protagonist (e.g., Perseus, Oedipus, Odysseus, Theseus) by existing simply to be overcome or destroyed as obstacles to his goal. In modern monster stories, conversely, heroes are boring and draw little interest whereas we remember the monster. It is the monster who lives on and who even lends its name to the story (e.g., Dracula The Mummy The Wolf Man The Blob , etc.). Check out a translation of the section of Virgil's Aeneid , Book VI, describing Aeneas' entrance into the "jaws of Orcus" (VI.13) the mouth of hell. There, two initial batches of monstrosities are met. 1) We first hear of abstractions such as "Grief and avenging Cares ... pale Diseases and sad Age ... Dread, and Hunger ... sordid Want ... Death and Toil and Death's own brother, Sleep ... Death-bringing War ... and raving Discord, / Viperish hair bound up in gory bands" (VI.14-22). These are very clearly cultural vilifications vs. what one first wants to insist. But there's nothing "sinful" about Age or Discord (called "raving Discord, / Viperish hair bound up in gory bands"). A less western philosophy turns Toil into a more positive experience. Sleep may resemble Death (and so is called its "brother"), but one has to be a little paranoid to place it among the horrors at the mouth of hell.

Classical Mythology page: The Greco-Roman myths concerning same-sex love have been of crucial importance to the Western gay and lesbian literary heritage, both as texts and as icons. Myth and literature are deeply interdependent and often indistinguishable. Being, in essence, the traditional tales told about gods and about human or semidivine heroes, myths generally take a narrative though sometimes a dramatic form. Usually they are first recorded in poetry, as Homer and Hesiod demonstrate with respect to the classical mythology that is to be focused on here. Sponsor Message.

Greek mythology is the body of myths and legends belonging to the ancient Greeks concerning their gods and heroes the nature of the world , and the origins and significance of their own cult and ritual practices. They were a part of religion in ancient Greece . Modern scholars refer to the myths and study them in an attempt to throw light on the religious and political institutions of Ancient Greece, its civilization, and to gain understanding of the nature of myth-making itself. Greek mythology is embodied explicitly in a large collection of narratives and implicitly in Greek representational arts, such as

INTRODUCTION Many years ago the Greeks thought up strange stories about gods and mighty humans to explain the nature of the universe. Plato called these stories myths Most of the myths involved heroic quests, immortality, fierce creatures, epic battles, rape, love affairs, quarrels, friendship, betrayal, revenge, suckling infants, despair, punishment, reward and thunderbolts. The gods had great powers but were not flawless. These stories were passed down through the centuries. When Rome took control of Greece the Romans adopted the gods and gave them Latin names. They also created a few myths of their own including The Founding of Rome. In the following pages I will tell you about the first gods from the beginning of the universe in The Creation I’ll write about Hermes who achieved many feats at the age of one day old in Hermes the Baby Rascal You will hear about Persephone who was kidnapped by her uncle and the earth’s first winter in The Rape of Persephone In The Gorgon’s Head Medusa will be transformed into a hideous monster and then killed.

This site was constructed as a Technology Integrated Project for the Fayette County School Corporation, Connersville, Indiana. This site addresses the following Indiana Standards 2000 for English:
  • 9.1.3: Use knowledge of Greek, Roman, and Norse mythology to understand the origin and meaning of new words. Note to teachers: No words from Norse myth are included because I only know of three words ( berserk rune, and valkyrie ) which entered English from Norse mythology, aside from the days of the week.
  • 9.6.3: Produce legible work that shows accurate spelling and correct use of the conventions of punctuation and capitalization.
  • 10.1.3: Use knowledge of Greek, Roman, and Norse mythology to understand the origin and meaning of new words.
  • 10.2.3: Demonstrate use of sophisticated technology by following technical directions.
  • 10.6.3: Produce legible work that shows accurate spelling and correct use of the conventions of punctuation and capitalization.
To the students, colleagues, and friends you know who you are! who debugged this project and made helpful suggestions, many thanks.
