Reference Shelf
Classroom Internet Integration
One important goal of EDSITEment is to help educators integrate the Internet as a standard classroom resource. Once you tap into this seemingly boundless source of ideas, new experiences, and information, you will recognize that it holds a unique potential for inspiring real intellectual curiosity in your students and for stimulating multidimensional intellectual growth. You can use the Internet to:
  • Create increased sharing of the responsibility for learning among students and teachers.
  • Engage students in authentic tasks, designed to help them understand how scholars, for example, use primary materials to interpret events or human interaction or expressions.
  • Encourage students to work in teams, sparking questions and ideas off of each other, offering them an experience similar to modern-day practices in the workplace.
  • Enhance students' natural curiosity and love of exploration.

Internet Safety
Recommendations Resources for Adults Resources for Kids Using the Internet allows students to instantly connect with others and access information without the barriers of time and distance, but these new learning and teaching environments bring additional responsibilities to teachers and families for teaching children how to make safe and informed decisions while using the Internet. In addition, Internet safety issues in schools usually revolve around two things: (1) the student’s ability to access inappropriate material; and (2) the potential risk to the student’s personal safety when "meeting" someone online. The information provided in the section below reflects a growing awareness about the possible danger to students in these areas and was gathered from a variety of reputable sources. There is a great deal of information for you to view related to this topic. Skim the materials and read only those items that are relevant to your situation. Save links that you think may be useful to you at a later date.

Classroom Internet Safety
By Nancy N eHow Contributor updated: July 28, 2010 I want to do this! What's This? Children will be safe on the Internet if they follow safety rules. computer image by Orlando Florin Rosu from Fotolia.com Although there are inherent dangers for children in the use of the Internet in the classroom, there are effective ways for educators to ensure their safety. Children need to learn to use the computer , but they can do so without getting in harm's way.
Ground Rules
  • Before gaining access to classroom computers , children need to be taught how to use them properly. They should learn safety rules and be tested to ensure they understand what they can and cannot do. Various child-safety organizations offer online programs that help cover the important information the children need.
  • Restricted Use on Computers
  • The first thing classroom computers require is a governor of some sort. The IT tech for the schools can create a safer environment for the children by limiting access to certain sites. These filters can be set at different levels of sensitivity, but they are effective in blocking much of the material that is harmful or inappropriate.

How has Social Media Changed Schools and Businesses?
Many colleges and universities have jumped on the bandwagon of social media. Why not? After all, schools are businesses too. They need more students to survive. A great marketing tool for schools has been to show what they are doing in the community. This is where social media comes into play. Many schools struggle to keep enrollment up, which is why many colleges and universities offer online programs. Even then enrollment can suffer. When you have a social media page up, it gives the impression to others that they have a direct line to someone at the school. Even though they could simply call the school directly, a social media site can offer even more choices for direct communication. Schools that do use social media regularly and post to it continually have seen an increase in website hits and enrollment inquiries. To your social media success! Beneta
