Classroom Management
The Questionnaire: Pupil Responses
Teacher characteristics
In trying to gain some insight into what were the factors which made pupils want to learn, and what put them off learning, in addition to asking about attitudes to school subjects, and to being in classrooms in general, we asked about what teacher characteristics influenced pupils' attitude to learning. This derived from a 'hunch', as practising teachers, that although there were clearly 'subject' factors involved, 'school' factors, and 'teaching methods' factors- what the teacher was like as a person - had an important influence on pupils' attitude to learning. Indeed, when you look at the data emerging from all seven questions, it is difficult not to conclude that who the teacher is, and what they are like as a person, is the most important determinant on attitudes to learning for many pupils, i.e. the teacher as 'reasonable human being', rather than the teacher's technical or pedagogical competence. Question 1 of the questionnaire gave the pupils in the 5 schools a list of 38 'teacher characteristics', and asked them to rank them 'Very important', to 'Doesn't matter'.

Sign to Learn Sign language is quiet, multi-sensory, and engaging. Its a tool for communication, as well as a great strategy for beginning readers. Here are some ideas for integrating sign language in your classroom. Hint! Its helpful to have a sign language dictionary in your classroom. You can also find information about sign language on the internet. Classroom Management - Teach children signs for stop, sit down, me too, stand up, restroom, water, yes, no, etc. Letters - Introduce manual signs to help children make letter connections. Teach them the first letter in their name and use this to dismiss children. Classroom Alphabet - Enlarge the manual signs and place them by the letters on your word wall. Effective Classroom Management for ESL Elementary School Students
By Erin Schreiner eHow Contributor updated: January 18, 2010 I want to do this! What's This? English as a Second Language classes are different from a typical classroom. In these modified settings, students receive individualized attention and a specialized curriculum to accommodate the needs of English language learners. In elementary schools, ESL teachers have the special challenge of maintaining classroom order while educating a group of students who speak an array of different languages. There are a few simple things that elementary ESL teachers can do to improve their classroom management.
Relationship
  • Establish relationship boundaries. It is easy for the line between ESL teacher and friend to blur as ESL teachers commonly spend so much time working one-on-one with their students. Maintain clear boundaries and act as the student's teacher, not his friend, to ensure that you retain control over your classroom.
