Clogging: What Is It?
by Marilyn Devin
(from an article that first appeared in Folk Dance Scene Magazine) Also called "Hillbilly Tapdancing," clogging is an authentic and distinctive form of American folk dance. Clogging has roots that reach back to our Scots-Irish and European heritage; yet at the same time, the clogging that's performed and enjoyed across the United States today has such a contemporary feel that even teenage kids have been known to desert MTV and hustle down to the school auditorium for an evening's dancing. What Do Cloggers Look Like? If you've ever seen a group of enthusiastic cloggers kicking up their heels, you probably haven't forgotten it. You'll have noticed, among other things, that cloggers don't look like the little dolls that dance out of cuckoo clock windows in pigtails and aprons; unless they're performing in a show, they dress like any other casual dancer. When cloggers do wear costumes, their clothes are something like square dance attire: typical for the women are ginghams tops or peasant blouses; the skirts are full, frequently with crinolines, and somewhat shorter than the usual square dance outfits; for men, it's jeans, plaid shirts, and maybe string ties or some other such Western touch. Another thing you'll remember if you've ever seen clogging is its most significant characteristic: foot stomping.

What is clogging? The best way to describe clogging is that it looks like a cross between Tap Dancing, Line Dancing and "River Dance". Cloggers wear soft leather shoes with noisy taps on them, usually dance in lines and the rhythms generated often sound like those of Irish Dance. Unlike Irish, clogging is done with a relaxed upper body. Individual styling is encouraged so all ages and all fitness levels can dance together. Clogging is one of the two main folk dance forms that started early in the development of the USA as the new European settlers mixed their various traditions. There are now many thousands of clogging clubs in USA and around the world. In Australia Clogging is fairly new, but there are already over 80 clubs. What has clogging got for you? Clogging gives you the opportunity to get out and enjoy a great social activity and get fit at the same time. You legs will tone up very quickly. Clogging improves flexibility, coordination, endurance and strength. It increases lung capacity, relieves stress, and it's aerobic and burns fat Clogging is usually danced in lines because there is a better social group feeling when you can see that your new friends are dancing the same routines as you. Clogging is never the less a

North Carolina State University's Clogging team began in 1989 under the direction of Marsha Lester. The team’s first performance was at a women’s basketball game in Reynold’s Coliseum. From that point on, the team began its long journey of success as a recognized organization on campus. The team currently competes under the American Clogging Hall of Fame and has traveled to many places (local and international) to perform and compete winning numerous awards. In addition to competition, the team has been very dedicated to community service in Raleigh and surrounding areas. New to Clogging? Clogging developed from aspects of English, Irish, German, and Cherokee step dances, as well as African rhythms and movement. It was from clogging that tap dance eventually segregated and evolved. Modern competitive clogging is inspired by traditional styles along with new age dance styles and is performed to a wide variety of music, including bluegrass, modern country, rock, pop and hip hop. Today clogging has several sanctioning bodies that oversee competitions held throughout the United States, with the majority located in the southeastern states. These high-energy styles have opened the forum to a wide audience. Clogging is the official state folk dance of North Carolina and Kentucky!

What is Clogging? A Brief History
By Jeff Driggs Editor of the Double Toe Times
C logging
is a truly American dance form that began in the Appalachian Mountains and now enjoys widespread popularity throughout the United States and around the world. As the Appalachians were settled in the mid 1700's by the Irish, Scottish, English and Dutch-Germans, the folk dances of each area met and began to combine in an impromptu foot-tapping style, the beginning of clog dancing as we know it today. Accompanied by rousing fiddle and bluegrass music. Clogging was a means of personal expression in a land of new found freedoms. The word "Clog" comes from the Gaelic and means "time". Clogging is a dance that is done in time with the music - to the downbeat - usually with the heel keeping rhythm. As clogging made its way to the flatlands, other influences shaped it. From the Cherokee Indians, to African Blacks and Russian Gypsies, clogging has enveloped many different traditions to become truly a "melting pot" of step dances. F or In the mid 1930's, another innovator emerged to help propel mountain style dancing to national prominence. Dr. Lloyd "Pappy" Shaw, a teacher and Superintendent at the Cheyenne Mountain School in Colorado, and an avid collector of dances, steps and square dance calls, formed an exhibition team from the dozens of high school students he taught and began to tour the United States, sharing his knowledge of dance with all who were interested. His 1939 book, "Cowboy Dances", is consider by many to be one of the finest historical collections of early American dances ever printed. After World War II, Dr. Shaw began to offer classes at his Cheyenne Mountain School in the instruction of old time dancing.

The Clogger - Walter Hurst

http://www.wlct.org/Tourism/Wiganpier/wiganpier.htm English clogs or wooden-soled shoes were primarily worn by underground coal miners, other pit workers such as the 'pit brow lasses' who worked on the surface hand-grading lumps of coal or pushing the loaded coal wagons between the colliery buildings, and by the many thousands of cotton mill workers in the 1800s and early 1900s. Indeed wherever it was damp or wet underfoot, clogs were the preferred footwear due to their cheapness (to buy and to repair), their long-lasting wear, and their comfort. But they always were (and still are) associated with the abject poverty endemic in the industrial towns of the North of England of the 19'th c. "My grandad started it off in 1898, when he was 26 ... I think his first week's takings were thirty bob." [That was 30 shillings or 30s 0d = Ł1.50 today]. "Grandad" was Walter Hurst of Hindley, who later had six cloggers and a shoe repairer working for him. Most cloggers were one-man businesses working from the front room of their houses.

Objective : Students will learn about the history of clogging and learn a basic clogging step. Materials: Camp Creek Boys CD or other old time string band music items for making taps (optional) bottle caps hammer 8" long elastic strips or rubber bands hot glue gun scrap paper Introduction: Clogging is a style of dance that developed in the Appalachian mountains. It is a rhythmic step dance that keeps the beat of the music with the feet tapping and shuffling. Clogging was traditionally done to old time string band music, but clogging teams today dance to many types of music. The roots of clogging are in the folk dances of the Irish, Scottish, British and German people who settled in the Appalachian mountains in the mid 1700s. The rich dance heritage of the African Americans also greatly influenced clogging and introduced more syncopation and body movement to the dances. By the turn of the 20th century, predominately in urban areas, all of these influences culminated into what we now call tap dancing. In the more isolated rural areas of the South, clogging continued as a separate style from tap dancing. In addition to the European and African influences, elements of Native American dance could be seen in the clogging styles that continued in these rural areas. Clogging was known by many different names such as flatfooting, foot stomping and buck dancing and was generally an individual style of dance.

Home General Home ACA Services ... Links Clogging (or Appalachian Mountain Folk Dance) is an American folk dance that has its origins in the Southern Appalachian Mountains of the United States of America. While it has strong ties to the step dances of the British Isles brought to the region by white settlers, clogging is also influenced by the traditional dance of Native Americans, and the traditional solo dances of African Americans. Clogging is a misnomer, since it is not performed in clogs, although some of the original step dances from Europe were. Nevertheless, the name persists, although in Appalachia, this form of percussive dance is often only known as buck dancing or flatfooting or just "dancing". In the United States, clogging takes two major forms: traditional Appalachian flatfoot dance and precision (or modern) clogging. Appalachian clogging can still be found in western North Carolina, West Virgina, southwestern Virginia, and other places in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Interest in Appalachian dance was significantly revived in the late 1970's by the Green Grass Cloggers. Cloggers in this style dance to live music; either the string band music of the southern Appalachian Mountains (featuring fiddle, banjo and guitar) or to bluegrass music.
