Antinori and Zavos: Aim to go ahead with plans
There is mounting criticism of plans by doctors from Italy and the United States to clone human beings. Among the latest voices to speak out against the proposals is the prominent Italian cardinal Carlo Maria Martini. The Milan archbishop said the cloning team should remember that "the dignity of man is the main thing, and persons cannot be fabricated through technology". He said a human being had an "innate and natural" dignity, which should "not be violated in any way". The cloning team insist their project is intended to help infertile couples and have tried to avoid ethical questions. But this has failed to stop the objections and doubts raised by religious and scientific groups. 'Frankenstein doctors' An Italian politician has been highly critical of the cloning team's research conference in Rome on Friday, which attracted a huge amount of publicity. Giovanni Bianchi, of the Popular Party, which is in the governing coalition, described the team as "Frankenstein" doctors and said the conference was called with "one eye on a scoop and the other, obviously, on business".

    CLONING: Bringing Back Endangered Species
    Applied Genetics News Oct, 2000
The first successful cloning of an endangered animal to late-stage fetal development has been reported. Advanced Cell Technology's (ACT, One Innovation Dr., Worcester, MA 01650; Tel: 508/756-1212, Fax: 508/756-0931; Website: www.advancedcell.com ) cross-species nuclear transfer to clone the endangered gaur used eggs derived from cows. In late November, a domestic cow named Bessie (Sioux City, IA) is due to give birth to a baby gaur bull, which the company hopes to name "Noah." More Articles of Interest The gaur is a large, wild ox species with a hump-like ridge on its back and with white or yellow stockings on all four legs. Adult males have shoulder heights of up to 7 ft. and weigh up to 2,200 lb. Males and females both have horns, which are flattened at the base, strongly curved and sweep backward and inward. Hunted for sport for generations, and with reduced natural habitats in its homelands in India and southeast Asia, the species is now on the list of endangered species. ACT researchers and their collaborators fused somatic cells of the endangered gaurs (B. gaurus) with the enucleated oocytes from domestic cows (B. taurus). The resultant embryos were transferred to surrogate domestic cows and have continued gestation for well over half a year. DNA analyses have confirmed that the nuclear genomes of the fetuses are B. gaurus in origin, and the cloned gaurs have exhibited typical embryonic and fetal development through the normal differentiation into complex tissues and organs. Noah is due to be born in late November. Details of the cloning are published in the journal Cloning.

Claims by a controversial company linked to a UFO sect that it has produced the world's first cloned human baby have been greeted with scepticism and calls for the process to be outlawed. Our science editor, Dr David Whitehouse, answers some questions about cloning and whether the technology can be made to work in humans. Q. How would it be done? A.
The model is Dolly the sheep and although the technology has been applied to several animals, it is still highly underdeveloped and the mechanisms involved are poorly understood. The scientists would remove the DNA from the nucleus of an egg cell taken from the mother. This DNA would then be replaced by the genetic material taken from one of the father's cells (or as in this case, the mother herself) - perhaps a skin cell. A trigger would be applied to the egg cell that would then make it start to divide like any normal embryo. The mother would have it implanted in her womb in a procedure which is routinely performed in IVF clinics. Q. So, what are the dangers?

Commending Michael Jackson’s ‘pioneer vision of cloning,’
LAS VEGAS, July 8 – After fielding numerous inquiries about the possible cloning of Michael Jackson, Dr. Brigitte Boisselier, head of Clonaid, today reaffirmed the company’s policy of strictly respecting the privacy of each of its patients.
“Clonaid prides itself on never releasing the identity of the numerous individuals who have been cloned in the past six years,” Boisselier said. “Even if that policy has been at the cost of my reputation, it’s important for us that the celebrities and other interested parties contacting us know they won’t be betrayed.”
Boisselier expressed admiration for Michael Jackson as an artist and also commended his courage in expressing support for human cloning at a time when it was getting much negative publicity in the press.

Cloned calves are grown from cultured cells
British Medical Journal Jan 15, 2000 by Susan Mayor
Six cloned calves have been created from cells cultured in vitro for up to three months, confirming previous work showing that relatively "old" cells can be used to clone whole animals. The achievement confirms the possibility of being able to carry out targeted genetic manipulations in vitrotaking out specific genes and replacing them with other onesbecause this requires prolonged culture of nuclear donor cells. A research team working in Japan and the United States has reported the birth of six clones of a 17 year old Japanese Black Beef bull, using ear skin fibroblast cells as nuclear donor cells. These cells were used after up to three months of in vitro culture, representing 10 to 15 culture passages. The four surviving clones are now 7 to 9 months old and seem normal, with no apparent differences compared with their peers produced by natural reproduction, according to the research team, whose results are due to appear shortly in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Professor Jerry Yang, director of the Transgenic Animal Facility at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, and member of the research team, commented: "These data show that fibroblasts of aged animals remain competent for cloning and prolonged culture does not affect the cloning competence of adult somatic donor cells."

Bolo Clone Projects
by Joseph Lo aka Jolo , last updated 1/23/2001
Introduction
Bolo is a Macintosh tank battle game developed by Stuart Cheshire. Bolo's popularity peaked in the mid 90's, and has since decayed into just a cult favorite, largely because Stuart never got around to implementing two important steps:
  • port Bolo to other platforms, in particular the ubiquitous Windows, and
  • improve upon Bolo's networking which currently allows only local games within a LAN or internet games via broadband Ethernet connections (such as DSL, cable, or better).
After many years of silence from Stuart, several cloning projects sprung up to fulfill these 2 needs. Without Stuart's consent or support, and using nothing but scarce public information, these clone authors essentially attempted to rewrite Bolo from scratch. This quest has finally ended with the release of WinBolo/LinBolo (described in the next section). I am not officially affiliated with any project, and all statements at this site are my opinions.
Bolo Clone Projects
Not counting many abortive attempts and hoaxes, there are today three viable Bolo clone projects, as shown in the list below. (By viable I don't mean vaporware hype like "I HAVE PC BOLO AND I WILL RELEASE!!!" but rather game code that was actually played by myself or other reliable sources, publicly or privately. The game should have most single-player features, including the ability to drive on a real map, interacting with the terrain, taking pills and bases, refueling, getting killed, etc.)

Removing an egg's nucleus during nuclear transfer. Courtesy of Roslin Institute, Edinburgh. Put aside those sci-fi comic books and pick up a newspaper—the future of cloning is now. From the Raelian's heavily hyped (and likely erroneous) claims of human cloning to the recent (and very real) advances in so-called therapeutic cloning , scientists, journalists, and ethicists have riled the public with each novel advance. Despite the recent buzz over this tantalizing technology, the basis for most cloning procedures—a technique called nuclear transfer—has been around for over fifty years.
Nuclear transfer
is a two-part process: first, scientists remove the nucleus from an egg, and second, they replace it with the nucleus of an older donor cell. A new clone—a genetic copy of the donor—forms when the egg starts to divide. Despite the seemingly simple nature of this technique, successful nuclear transfer thwarted scientists for many years after it was first proposed in 1938 (

The three years since seeing The Phantom Menace have payed off. Lucas' last attempt, although not a good one, brought in an awful lot of money, even set records. It made Star Wars fans wary of Episode II , however. After word got out of what would be taking place in the new film, and just the fact that Yoda himself would wield a lightsaber and duel was enough to get fans interested in the Force again.
I really didn't find a lot to argue about with this movie, there was significantly less Jar Jar, and more story. One thing I did seem to have a problem with was the fact that it has been 10 years since we last saw everyone, so why does Anakin, played by Hayden Christensen, still act like a little boy? Why this only happens rarely in the film, it seems to really make itself known when it does happen. You can truly see the darkness in which Anakin will eventually become as he defies the counsel, defies his master, and even defies the laws of which he is bound.
Effects in the movie are much better than they were for
