Co-generation Cogeneration is a highly efficient means of generating heat and electric power at the same time from the same energy source. Displacing fossil fuel combustion with heat that would normally be wasted in the process of power generation, it reaches efficienciences that can triple, or even quadruple, conventional power generation. Although cogeneration has been in use for nearly a century, in the mid-1980s relatively low natural gas prices made it a widely attractive alternative for new power generation. In fact, gas-fired cogeneration is largely responsible for the decline in conventional power plant construction that occurred in North America during the 1980s. Cogeneration accounted for a large proportion of all new power plant capacity built in North America during much of the period in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Cogeneration equipment can be fired by fuels other than natural gas. There are installations in operation that use wood, agricultural waste, peat moss, and a wide variety of other fuels, depending on local availability. To understand cogeneration, it is necessary to know that most conventional power generation is based on burning a fuel to produce steam. It is the pressure of the steam which actually turns the turbines and generates power, in an inherently inefficient process. Because of a basic principle of physics no more than one third of the energy of the original fuel can be converted to the steam pressure which generates electricity. Cogeneration, in contrast, makes use of the excess heat, usually in the form of relatively low-temperature steam exhausted from the power generation turbines. Such steam is suitable for a wide range of heating applications, and effectively displaces the combustion of carbon-based fuels, with all their environmental implications.

Cogeneration
Cogeneration, or combined heat and power, is the simultaneous production of electricity and useful heat from the same fuel or energy. Facilities with cogeneration systems use them to produce electricity, and use the waste heat for process steam, hot water heating, space heating, and other thermal needs. Fuels commonly used in cogeneration include natural gas, oil, diesel fuel, propane, coal, wood, wood-waste and biomass.

Cogeneration plants can reach system efficiencies exceeding 60%. Cogeneration, a term originally coined by President Jimmy Carter while he was in office, has also been referred to as: district energy, cogen, combined heating and power, CHP, cooling, heating and power and total energy. Cogeneration is an energy-efficient, environmentally-friendly method of producing electricity (power), steam and/or hot water at the same time, in one process, with one fuel. Fuels used in cogeneration include natural gas, fuel oil, propane, bio-mass, bio-waste, and renewable energies such as wood, or wood waste. More and more companies are finding cogeneration the best way to provide power and thermal energy for their on-site energy requirements due to the numerous advantages and benefits. Typical power plants waste up to 75% of the original fuel through heat loss, line transmission losses and other inefficiencies.

Biomass Cogeneration Energy Plants
Downer Energy Systems (DES) has the capability and experience to deliver "turnkey" Biomass to Energy Plants. In addition to such complete "design and construct" power generating and/or process steam plants, DES can also engineer system packages of plant tailored to complement larger systems supplied by others. The purpose of the Plant is to provide reliable steam and power supplies to the neighbouring host (eg Sugar Mill), and power to the electricity distribution network. Excess biomass from the host plant process and/or other fuel such as woodwastes is used to fuel the boiler throughout the host industry's annual season. The boiler supplies steam to an extraction, condensing steam turbine-generator unit which would have a nominal output typically in the range of 25 to 60MW. The steam turbine has several extractions to supply steam for the host plant process and for low pressure boiler feedwater heating. Exhaust steam from the turbine is condensed in a surface condenser which is cooled, in turn, by an induced draft mechanical type cooling tower. Condensate from the condenser is heated by a low or high pressure feedwater heater, being deaerated either via a deaerating condenser or feedwater storage tank, and is finally returned to the boiler.

America's Clear and Present Danger
Monty Goodell, MBA Founder and Chairman Renewable Energy Institute
The Renewable Energy Institute (REI) does not take a stand in the debate on global warming, and if there is, is it "anthropogenic" and not caused by the sun, sun spots, or the sun's normal cycles. Or, is global warming and climate change caused by the water vapor in the atmosphere? At the Renewable Energy Institute In the meantime, far more harm is being done to our planet as well as to people and plants and animals, particularly fish, from the mercury emissions from coal fired power plants than from the coal fired power plants greenhouse gas emissions . We surmise that if any polar bears have died as a result of an environmental problem, it was more likely from the high levels of mercury in their food chain, than from

COGENERATION / ENERGY GENERAL Aldworth Engineering Inc. (AEI) is an independent mechanical-electrical consulting firm specializing in cogeneration, district energy , biogas power, 'waste-to-energy' (incineration), and environmental protection. Since an initial cogeneration project in Sarnia in 1962, our staff has developed extensive experience both in 'non-utility generation' and 'load-displacement' cogeneration projects. In fact, AEI is second to none in experience on smaller cogeneration projects from coast to coast in Canada. Our power plant designs incorporate all major prime-mover and exhaust gas boiler classifications. Clients range from municipal/governmental to industrial/institutional groups, and include utilities, 'full-service' developers, turnkey-contractors, and power equipment suppliers. Services provided by the firm cover feasibility studies, facility design (preliminary through final), and construction supervision together with facility commissioning and operations assistance. We have provided cost-conscious selections for pre-owned equipment where project economics dictated. The following are representative areas, in which our staff has participated, and each area is set out in detail on the ensuing pages.
