      Cockatiel Information
Cockatiels are one of the most popular pet birds. They are small parrots with an affectionate, kind temperament and though they rarely talk, they are exceptional whistlers and can learn tunes. Their handsome colors and jolly crest on their head make them very attractive to bird lovers.
      Things to Consider Before Purchasing
Cockatiels live up to 20 years, so the purchasing of a cockatiel will be a decision you'll likely live with for the rest of your life. Cockatiels are native to Australia where huge flocks gather at water sources in the arid regions of the country. Bans on the export of all wild birds from Australia means that the cockatiel that your buy will have been bred in captivity. Nevertheless, it is important that the bird was hand raised and is comfortable with humans, if not you will have a difficult time with the bird. A badly behaved cockatiel is something you and your family want to avoid. To check the temperament of the cockatiel before your buy it, put your finger out near the bird. If it readily hops onto your finger it was likely hand raised. Cockatiels love human contact and once they have become accustomed to it, they crave a scratch on the head, a pet or a ride on their human's shoulder. If the cockatiel refuses to get on your finger or tries to bite, you'd rather move on to another breeder or pet shop. Only purchase a hand raised cockatiel with good temperament.

Cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) are endemic to the outback regions of central Australia . Their preferred habitat includes the Australian wetlands, scrublands, and bush lands. The sociable and generally gentle cockatiel has become a treasured household pet that will do well in most households. Arguably more popular than the Budgerigar , cockatiels are popular household pets in many parts of the world. Today, all pet cockatiels are bred in captivity, as Australia no longer permits the export of native wildlife, whether endangered or not. Bookmarks / web links:

printed or reproduced for redistribution without site owner's permission. After the all seed and seed based diet are excluded for being nutritionally deficient and unhealthy, there are 2 other types of diets for cockatiels to be considered. Although they both include pellets, they vary in nutritional adequacy and composition. They also vary in convenience. One of the most well known diets for cockatiels is based on a diet developed by Tom Roudybush, co-founder of the Psittacine Research Project. Roudybush spent 15 years conducting research on cockatiel nutrition at UC-Davis. He has now earned his PHD in Nutrition, owns his own feed company and is one of the most respected avian nutritionist in the field. The Roudybush diet has been modified here and there are several variations. These foods are served daily and based on about the following proportions: Basic Mixed Food Diet
  • 25% vitamin enriched cockatiel seed mix
  • 25% cockatiel pellets
  • 25% vegetables, dark leafy greens and fruit

Wonderful cockatiels originate from Australia and make excellent pets, photos and description

Home Site Index Parrot Toys Parrot Food ... Shop Info Cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus)
Wonderful Cockatiels originate from Australia, where they are still abundant in wild flocks. There are many variations of the Cockatiel in captivity and the most common is the normal grey, pictured above. In the normal grey Cockatiel the main, (but not only) distinction between sexes is the colouration of the head and facial features. The males having a bright yellow face and orange cheek patches, the females are mainly grey around the head with a fainter orange around the cheeks. They are approximately 12 inches from head to the end of their long tail. Because they have proved to breed quite easily in captivity they have become quite common, but because of this they should never be underrated. They make the most excellent little pets with a fairly long life span of up to 30 years. The cockatiel on the left was bred by us and still lives with us. The right foot as you will notice sits at an odd angle. This was caused by damage in the nest box, possibly the result of having been sat on by other birds. This slight disability does not hinder him in any way at all in his daily activities.
The males make the best talkers, rather than the females, but why this is so, no-one really knows. Their diet in the wild consists of small seeds, fruit and berries, and in captivity they should be offered a good quality seed mix with a variety of fruit and vegetables offered, plus millet spray. Our cockatiels always have cuttle fish bone and iodine blocks available also.

    Cockatiel Sexing
    Sexing Cockatiels
sexing cockatiels can be quite difficult. There are four basic ways to identify whether your cockatiel is a boy or a girl. They include surgical sexing
    Sexing Cockatiels with Avian veterinarian
It must be noted that this examination is for experienced avian veterinarians only. You do not want to go poking and prodding your cockatiel to see if it is male or female, you could easily end up harming them. An unidentified bird is better than a dead bird.
Cockatiel Sexing Using Coloration and Feather Patterns
Sexually dimorphic, meaning males and females have differences in their appearance. Male cockatiels
Male cockatiels have tails that are solid in color while females tend to have stripes or bars on the underside of their tail feathers. Sometimes the differences in coloration and the feather patterns can be quite subtle and difficult to recognize.
    Cockatiel Sexing Judged by Behavior
Male cockatiels tend to be more verbal than females. The males will sing and mimic words and sounds much more often than females. Females also tend to molt earlier than males do. They tend to begin molting around 9 months while the males molt a bit later.
