COCKATIELS
Cockatiels are originally from Australia and are among a handful of parrots that are not endangered today. They are available in several different color mutations. Keep in mind that some mutations are more prone to health related problems and may not live as long. Cockatiels are better at imitating sounds, especially whistles, than they are at talking. Some individuals whistle so well that they can whistle entire songs. There are however, many cockatiels that are excellent talkers. Males are more vocals than the females are. Because they breed so well in captivity, there is no need for them to be imported. The number two pet bird around the world today is the cockatiel. They are around twelve inches long. Most of this length is it's tail. They are wonderful companions for a child, provided there is adult supervision. As with any bird, each one will have their own unique personality. Some will be timid and gentle, while others can become very nippy at times. These times seem to be around the mating season and are probably due to hormones. They are smart and entertaining and can easily be taught a variety of tricks. They do best if they are allowed out often, receiving a lot of attention. You may find that some cockatiels may not like hands or fingers very much. This can also occur with handfed babies that may or may not have been properly socialized. You can use your hand with fingers folded over and then slowly let your fingers show more and more. This seems to work with some cockatiels. It allows them to slowly become used to fingers and at their own rate.

    A small introduction
Warning: This is just an intro page. I am not a trained aviculturalist. This is not and should not be your final guide to bird-keeping!! IF YOUR BIRD IS SICK OR INJURED PLEASE TAKE IT TO AN AVIAN VET!!! I'm limiting this to cockatiels and lovebirds because I have only owned two cockatiels and one lovebird (and a bunch of untame budgies). Larger parrots share much in common with these smaller members of the family, but their needs and their abilities differ greatly. If you are planning on getting a pet bird, or are a new owner, I highly recommend the magazine BIRD TALK . In addition, you should buy/borrow books on bird keeping at a library, bookstore, or good petstore. And definitely locate a good, qualified avian vet right away, if you haven't already! He or she will be much more qualified to answer your health/medical questions than me. Other related pages at this site:

    General Care of Cockatiels
By Debra Schwarz Chicago Exotics, P.C. W Dempster Skokie Illinois Cockatiels, Nymphicus hollandicus, are small parrots native to most of the Australian continent. There is only one species of cockatiel although there is many color mutations available. They generally range in weight from 75-110 grams and are usually 11-13 inches in length. With good care, a cockatiel can live well into its twenties. Your Cockatiel's Home A large, clean, well-appointed cage is imperative to your cockatiel’s health and happiness. When selecting a cage and furnishings for your cockatiel, think of the features that you would look for yourself. Size, location, quality, and cleanliness are all important. A cage should be no less than 20”x 20” for a single bird. There is no such thing as a cage that is too large, as long as the bar spacing is not more than ¾”. If the bar spacing is larger than that, your bird could get its head stuck between the bars and hang itself. Also, please do not select one of those tall cylindrical cages. Think of cockatiels as airplanes that move laterally, not helicopters that move vertically.

Breeding Cockatiels Cockatiel breeding is not especially difficult, but it will require your time and commitment, in addition to a lot of preparation. Before getting started, there are some things to consider:
Pet or Breeder? Owners should realize that their cockatiels can't be both good breeders / parents and remain devoted pets to them. Mating, nesting and raising a family will keep them busy and, as a general rule, they will concentrate on that and loose interest in their human care takers. Of course, there are - as always - exceptions to this rule.

If you prefer a small bird that is just as loveable and affectionate as a larger parrot yet requires less space, then a cockatiel might be an excellent choice. Cockatiels are prized throughout the world because of their lovable nature. They are easy to breed, gentle, and love to be handled and stroked. Cockatiels make a soft chirping sound and are less noisy than other parrots. Cockatiels are easy to tame, inexpensive and simple to maintain, and thus make an excellent choice for a beginner.

    Cockatiels as Pets
Cockatiels have personality, attitude and agility. Originating from Australia, these birds have become very popular pets. Cockatiels thrive on attention and social interactions. Many like to be scratched under the chin, have their heads stroked or take part in a sometimes one-sided conversation. Kept as either an individual bird or a pair, cockatiels bring much entertainment into a home. They make excellent first pets and adapt well to apartment living. Please note: cockatiels are not suitable for young children (less than 6 years of age). Children should always be supervised by an adult, and should never be solely responsible for the care of the bird. Cockatiels will bite if frightened or threatened.
    Description
Most cockatiels are 12 – 14 inches long, with the tail making up about half of that size and weigh 75 to 100 grams. Generally, cockatiels are grey and yellow with a beautiful yellow crest on the top of the head. These birds can live from 15 to 20 years. Numerous colour variations and mutations are available, such as a white-faced bird, lutinos, pearl, and pied. Younger cockatiels have stripes on the underside of the wings and tail, which fade with maturity. The males tend to have more colour variations, and a prominent crest. The females maintain the horizontal wing and tail stripes for a much longer period of time.

By Naomi Bolton eHow Contributor updated: October 29, 2010 I want to do this! What's This? The most common infection in cockatiels is psittacosis. Theo Allofs/Photodisc/Getty Images A high white blood cell count in cockatiels is indicative of an increase in disease fighting cells within the bird' s blood. Such an elevated white blood count means that the bird is fighting an infection. The most common infection in cockatiels is psittacosis, which can be a life threatening disease in parrots. Cockatiel keepers will notice various symptoms of this disease in their birds, which include eye and nostril discharge, green diarrhea and labored breathing. Psittacosis can be transmitted to humans, according to Dr. Rob Marshall of AvianWeb.com, and can cause kidney failure and sever liver disease in humans if not treated. Difficulty: Moderate
    Instructions
    Things You'll Need:
    • Warm room which can lock Access to a veterinarian Antibiotic medication Medicated food (optional) Water bowel 50 disposable plastic teaspoons
Take action immediately and be prepared to treat the cockatiel for up to 45 days.

My main focus is raising cockatiels that are competitive, exhibition quality with super sweet personalities. The only rare mutations I am working with currently are the pastelface and the creamface. My favorite mutation is the cinnamon and cinnamon pearl pieds. It was actually seeing my first cinnamon pearl pied that got me hooked on exhibition. I just had to have one! Raising and exhibiting cockatiels is something the whole family can enjoy. Educational opportunities are endless. Animal husbandry, basic genetics , and wroking toward a common goal are just a few things a family can enjoy together.
