A Cockatiel Can Be
Anyone's Best Friend
Cockatiels are friendly parrots that are an excellent choice for a first bird. They are fun and affectionate, easy to train and many can be taught a few words. Their curiousity and intelligence will delight you everyday. You will soon find yourself with a new best friend!
I purchased my first cockatiel, DeeJay, in 1984. I thought he was lonely, so I bought him a mate in 1985. Her name is Crystal. She is lutino (yellow) and DeeJay is gray, which is the color of the birds in the wild. They originate in Australia and you can actually see large flocks of wild gray cockatiels flying free there. Any birds purchased in the United States would have been bred here, since we no longer import birds. Mine were hand-fed, but parent raised cockatiels make equally wonderful pets. They are relatively easy to breed, with my Crystal still laying eggs in her twenties. The average lifespan is 15 to 25 years, so mine are definitely seniors, but you would never know by looking at them. I believe their longevity is the result of providing them with a healthy diet and plenty of exercise . They are allowed free flight out of their cage daily and if this is not an option for you, try to provide a

Secrets to a healthy, happy Cockatiel
Cockatiel Care
A Long Term Relationship
You really will be having a relationship with your cockatiel. Most birds form a very strong bond with their human owners. A strong relationship like this is an important part of a healthy life for a cockatiel.
There are a wide variety of cockatiels, but one thing is true for all of them - good nutrition is critical if you want your cockatiel to have a good quality of life. In general, a healthy diet for a cockatiel consists of fresh fruits and vegetables, pellets, and a high quality seed mix that is enriched with vitamins.
Fresh clean water is also an important part of a good daily diet for your bird companion.
Cleanliness is Important
Grooming Your Cockatiel Your cockatiel will need periodic grooming. Their nails and beak will continue to grow and can cause problems for your bird if not properly cared for. Overgrown nails can get caught on toys or perches. You can clip them every three to four weeks to minimize this risk. A good cuttlebone can give your cockatiel something to keep their beak trimmed.

15 years-old hand-reared and socialized Wildtype (Normal Grey) female Cockatiel. Cockatiels Nymphicus hollandicus ), are generally regarded as good pets or companion parrots , having a sweet demeanor, though this is by no means a guarantee. Like most other pets, the manner in which the animal is raised, handled, and kept has a profound effect on the temperament of the animal. Some birds are quite gregarious and sociable while others can be shy, retreating to the back of the cage when an unfamiliar figure appears. If handled often and if they have a patient owner the cockatiel(s) will become tame very quickly compared to some of the other parrot species.

What's new Malaysia Bird Forum Introduction To Cockatiel ... Darlene Jevne
Tame Cockatiel is a very charming pet bird. They love to whistle and can be very noisy when they exited. They just enjoy to accompany us. Pet Cockatiel can be teached some trick and also can be train to talk. Cockatiel is able to whistle and can talk if we teach them properly. However, I would like to stress here that as a birds keeper, we should provide a good house for them. Good cage with enough room for them to climb and "fly" and also some toys for them to play when we are not at home is necessary for keeping Pet Cockatiel.
I think cockatiel is an ideal pet bird for many of us. It is not very expensive as many pet birds such as Macaw, Cockatoo or Amazon Parrot. It even not as expensive as Conures or some of the Parakeet, while it is can be consider bigger than budgie. It can be classified as small pet birds as the size is about 30 CM from head to its tail. The tail is about half of the length.
In Malaysia, I saw many pet shop sell cockatiel. However, these Cockatiel is not hand feed and if you are not very lucky, normally you can only find Cockatiel that is not tame. From the information that I get from some pets shop owner in Kuala Lumpur, they import Cockatiel to Malaysia. They claim that there are no Cockatiel breeder in Malaysia.

Home Choosing Your Pet Birds Cockatiels
Cockatiels are one of the most popular birds, and taming them is easier than other parrot species because of their small size. Cockatiels are among the most popular pet birds. Small parrots with a variety of color patterns and a crest, they are attractive as well as friendly and easy to tame. Because of their small size, cockatiel care and taming is easier than some other parrot species. They are capable of mimicking speech, although they can be difficult to understand. However, they are quite good at whistling and can often be taught to whistle tunes. Choosing a Bird
It is best to choose a hand fed baby or at least a young bird that has been handled regularly. Prices will vary with color and you can expect to pay a bit more from a conscientious breeder, but a well handled young bird is worth any extra cost. Cockatiels are quite widely available at pet stores, but these birds may have an unknown history. As a result, they may be older, not used to being handled, and harder to tame. Look for a bird that is bright, alert and active. A bird sitting quietly with puffed feathers might be ill and is best avoided. The feathers should be smooth and shiny and lay down flat on the body. The feathers around the vent/cloacae should be clean, dry, and free of fecal matter. The scales on the feet should be smooth, the nails in good condition, the beak should be smooth and well-shaped, and the nostrils should be clear and clean.

Cockatiels
A Cockatiel is a type of bird that belongs to the parrot group. Its most basic color is gray with both the male and female having gray bodies, beaks and feet. Mature males will have solid yellow heads and black feathers on the underside of their tails while mature females will have more of a grayish head and barred yellow with black feathers on the underside of their tails. However, there are many different color mutations in Cockatiels.
Cockatiels as Pets
Lutino bodies are those that are white to creamy yellow with orange cheek patches. Females will have yellow barring in the tail feathers while the males will have none. The pied mutation has blotches of color on their bodies which can be any color that occurs in a solid-colored Cockatiel. The difference between male and female is almost unnoticeable that a DNA test has to be done to determine the sex. The pearl mutations are those with pearl marking over the back and wings. The male usually loses his marking over a period of years while the female retains hers. Cinnamon mutation occurs in Cockatiels that looks like a regular gray Cockatiel but only with a warm brown cinnamon color. White-faced Cockatiels lack the yellow coloration and cheek patches. The Albino mutation would have no pigment whatsoever and will have pure white feathers.

Chiko
This is Chiko. She is the first cockatiel I ever owned and has spoiled me into being obsessed with cockatiels. I got Chiko in February 1986 and she's still the biggest baby I've ever had. If I leave the room, she will let me know I forgot her by screaming at me, so I have to go back and take her with me. Don't know what I would ever do without this character.
DJ came along next - I got him from a girlfriend of mine for babysitting her birds while she was on vacation. I had a tough choice, because DJ and another bird looked exactly alike, but when he started singing, I knew I wanted him. He got his name because he sounded like a radio DJ auditioning for my attention! His mate is Snowy who will be shown later. DJ's first love was a cockatiel named Pepper, who I got from a co-worker, but later I had to have Pepper put to sleep because she became so crippled up she couldn't sit on her perch or walk - it was a hard thing to put her down, and DJ was extremely depressed for about 2 days, but then like most men, moved on with her life with Snowy!!! I have been treating DJ for allergies ever since I got him and he also has liver trouble; therefore, all my birds eat pelleted food and it has helped DJ feel much better.

Campbell, DVM Nutrition in domestic animals traditionally treated by veterinarians has been researched extensively, and as a result many excellent commercial diets are readily available. The same is not true for caged birds. Little basic research has been done for birds, and there is not likely to be much more in the future. Problems related to improper nutrition are extremely common in pet birds. In the larger parrot species (amazons, cockatoos, macaws), whose normal life spans are quite long, it is reported that the majority of these birds die within 5 years of purchase. Nutrition plays a major role in their demise. A recent Dutch study revealed that 60% of the birds presented for autopsy showed signs of nutritional deficiency. In the field of avian medicine we suffer from a glut number of "old wives tales" regarding bird care. These include: "if your bird eats table food it will die" (the opposite is true); and "vitamins are not necessary because everything is in the seed." Traditional parrot diets have been "parrot mix," a mineral block, grit and water. The typical mix is sunflower seed, peanuts, safflower seed with some smaller seeds on occasion. Other foods often fed include apples, grapes, and lettuce, which provide very little nutritional value. As a primary diet, this fare is deficient in Vitamins A and D-3, calcium, zinc, and many essential amino acids while providing excess fat. Also, this diet in no way resembles the bird' natural diet.

by NCS Online Pet Consultant, Mary Beth Voelker
I t can be very hard to tell if a bird is ill. Being prey animals, rather than predators like most of our familiar pets, they hide their illnesses so a predator doesn't target them as easy game. Your best chance of catching a disease in the early, treatable stage is to know your bird well and to stay alert for significant changes. Some signs to beware are:
  • Listlessness, lack of energy, and lack of interest in normal activities. Dull, rough, un-preened feathers or a general un-groomed look. Fluffed up feathers despite moderate room temperature. Abnormal feather growth. Sleeping with both feet on the perch.

Avian Obesity
(and Its Affect on the Respiratory System)
by Dave McCluggage, DVM ... Obesity is a common problem in cockatiels. It can only be corrected over long periods of time by monitoring weights, feeding balanced diets that are low in fat, breeding birds that do not have a tendency toward obesity, and by moderate exercise.
