Sour Crop or crop binding is a general term given to a host of problems that can cause slow crop emptying or total lack of movement of crop contents. The most common symptoms are a noticeably full crop at the time of the next handfeeding or young birds that are failing to thrive in the nest. The causes of sour crop can be divided into primary and secondary categories. Primary disorders would be those which involve the crop directly. Parents feeding the your wood chips, corn cob, or see hulls can cause a foreign body obstruction. Watching the parents or eliminating these items from the cages is an easy solution should the problem arise. Overfeeding can distend the crop beyond its ability to effectively move the contents down the intestinal tract. To avoid this problem feed a moderate amount of food more frequently until you have a feel for the amount that the youngsters can handle and be sure the crop is empty before the next feeding. The inexperienced parent can also overfeed her youngsters, so do not assume that a parent raising young will not make mistakes. Burning of the crop can occur by feeding foods that are too hot especially those warmed in a microwave. The injury can be mild or cause an open wound to the outside to develop. Stirring the formula after heating and checking the temperature (ideal 98-104 degrees) should prevent this problem.

Cockatiel Bird Information
You should always stand back and watch an aviary or a cage and observe what is going on inside. A healthy bird will be hopping from perch to perch, will look alert and usually display a natural shyness when confronted by a stranger standing near the cage. The cockatiels breathing should be even and quite, having an open beak or heavy and distressed breathing are signs of a respiratory disease. This could also been shown by having a creamy / watery discharge around the eyes and nostrils of the bird. Healthy birds feathers are smooth and shiny, the feathers should not show any kind of defects. Around the cockatiels vent, the feathers should be dry and clean, dirty feathers around the vent can be a sign of intestinal or kidney problems. Check out the droppings of the cockatiel, they should be green and firm with a white top, this is the natural material that is excreted from the kidneys. When looking to buy a cockatiel , you should dismiss the bird if it is underweight, has damaged feathers, any nasal discharge, crusty skin, an overgrown beak, missing toes, a dirty beak, or if it’s breathing looks impaired.

Hi there...well if you are here you love cockatiels or have a great interest in what it would be like to share your life with a cockatiel..I dont say own because one thing I can say after having owned cockatiels over the last 14 years but more seriously over the past 6 years is that you do not OWN a cockatiel but rather the opposite...they own you...:). The picture of the beauty above is our precious Chico and his wife with little chicks. Gosh what a beauty and a sweetheart; he does not mind us looking in at his babies as you can see as long as we notice him...:). It is difficult to find words than can accurately describe the rewards that one feels from bonding with a tiel as the love they give is in a category all its own.

Cockatiel of The Week This is my brand new page on "Cockatiel of The Week."
Once a week I will choose a
Cockatiel picture and description of the bird. This week I put my own bird, "Sam." To send me a picture of your bird, just e-mail me with the name of the bird, how old he/she is, what breed she/he is, and the a description of the bird, how you got it, and why you love your cockatiel so much!
Here's a sample of my bird:
Name: Sam
Age: 5yrs.
Breed: Pearl Pied
Description:
Hi, my name is Sam, and I am a Pearl Pied. My mommy got me 5yrs. ago for her 10th birthday. When she got me I was very scared, but after awhile I really got attached to her because we played together all the time. About two years ago, I was outside with her and I got spooked by a rain drop. I flew off and landed on top of a house. It was very scary, but then mommy and grandpa rescued me by spraying me with a hose, (which was very cold!). Now I live with her still happily ever day!
Hope you enjoy, and can't wait to post new pictures!

rick.solis@yahoo.com I've kept birds since I was about twelve years old. My first interest was in breeding color mutations. In 1989 I bought a whiteface cockatiel from an importer in Miami and bred him with a big lutino hen. From that start I bred one of the first albinos to be shown at an ACS show. My focus then turned to breeding more for conformation, that is to say, balance, size, posture and length. In 2006 one of my Normal cockatiels went Best in Show at the American Cockatiel Society Specialty Show. His son took Best in Show at the 2007 ACS Specialty Show. In 2008 the ACS Specialty Show was won by his first-cousin on his mother's side. The breeders of this family of cockatiels have high hopes for taking home the 2009 ACS Specialty Trophy. These cockatiels come from the lines established by Ken and Maureen O'Steen. Through the years I am out-crossing them to Pam Holmer's Alice/Sally/Edie line and to Linda Greeson's Hogan line. I owe a debt of gratitude to these fine people. Rick Solis Tampa, Florida
