Beautiful and Cuddly.
These are the words normally used to describe one of natures most unusual parrots, the Moluccan Cockatoo . It's unusual in that it's one of the few "lap birds", and acts more like a dog than a bird sometimes. As babies, Moluccans so easily touch your heart that it's hard to walk away from them without taking one home. Their liquid eyes look like black pools of inquisitiveness as they carefully study your facial expressions, and you seem to be able to look right into their very souls. Both Moluccans and Umbrella cockatoos possess a sweetness that few parrots can match, for a while . As all good things must come to an end however, so goes the sweetness as these babies mature. This is not to say that there will be a complete change, but the odds are great that the 'Too you'll wind up-with years later is not the sweetness and light you brought home . Do all birds change? No. Will most change to some degree? You'd better believe it! And it's these changes that sometimes drive owners to rescues

There are seventeen species of cockatoos. Goffin's are the smallest, measuring about 12"-14" in length. Goliath Palm Cockatoos are the largest, measuring about 27" in length. Outside of Australia , the Moluccan and Umbrella Cockatoos also make a lovely pets but are rarely kept as pets in Australia due to their expense. The most obvious external feature of any cockatoo is the erectile crest that raises immediately after alighting and when alarmed or excited. The strong, heavy beak of the cockatoo is used to crack large seeds but can also produce a powerful and destructive bite. Consistent training from a young age will help ensure potential cockatoo owners enjoy a bird free of this destructive habit. Hand reared male

purplecleo Hi everyone,
I feel like I want to go around telling everyone I know that we've just added Coconut the G2 to our flock. Rescued from an individual, she's got a lot of problems. She plucks and mutilates, doesn't step up, doesn't take no for an answer, doesn't realize she doesn't have to worry about being the boss of the whole place anymore.
I know a lot of you watch where I've posted some info and such about her but this community is a bit dead so I thought maybe I'd liven it up with a photo of Coconut's "before" picture. "After" picture to come in a few months when she's (hopefully) improved.
She's done a lot fussing with her wound today. Her owner warned me not to be upset if for the first few days she backslides but it is pretty heart breaking. I have all these things I want to do for her that I think will help her but I know I've also gotta be patient and earn her trust. I'm calling the local avian vet tomorrow to set up her appointment which will be a load off of our minds.
Here's what we have in our arsenal, aside from vet care. Let me know if there's anything else you might suggest:

    Species:
There are many species of cockatoos, but the most common species seen in captivity (in no particular order) include the Moluccan, Goffin's, umbrella, sulfur crested (greater and lesser), and bare eyed cockatoos.
    Size:
Range in size from about 12 inches to about 27 inches. Those on the smaller size include Goffin's cockatoo and the lesser sulfur crested cockatoo, while the larger cockatoos included the umbrella, Moluccan and greater sulfur crested cockatoos.
    Expected Life Span:
With proper care, cockatoos can be expected to live from about 40 years (smaller species) to 80 years or more (larger species). Unfortunately, many in captivity die younger than this.
    Temperament:
Cockatoos are very lively and affectionate birds. They are quite "cuddly" and bond very closely with their owners. However, their sociability and need for affection means they demand a great deal of time from their owners. Deprived of affection, cockatoos will become depressed or exhibit neurotic behaviors. They are intelligent, playful, mischevious, and they can be exceptionally loud. They are somewhat excitable so sometimes don't do that well around young kids.

Listen to sulphur-crested cockatoos here Habitat and Distribution (where they are found in the wild)
The sulphur-crested cockatoo is found all through the eastern states of Australia, and along the northern coast, Tasmania and parts of South Australia and Western Australia. It is one of the best known of all Australian birds. It is a type of parrot. Appearance
The bird is white, with a bright yellow crest that curves forward when it is opened. When closed, it forms a yellow plume at the back of the bird's head. The underside of the wings and tail are pale yellow. The strong curved beak is black. The sulphur-crested cockatoo is large, about 49 cm long, including tail. Males and females look alike. Diet
Sulphur-crested cockatoos eat the seeds of grasses and plants, grains, roots, berries, buds. They eat crops such as oats and maize, but also eat the insects and grubs on the crops, and weeds. They feed in the morning and evening, and spend the hottest part of the day in trees stripping off leaves and bark. The flock will stay in the same feeding area until they have exhausted it before moving on. In the north, the cockatoos live in pairs or small groups. In the south, the birds live in large flocks. Some of the flock stay in the trees as lookouts while the flock feeds on the ground. They warn of intruders, and the whole flock takes off together. The sulphur-crested cockatoo has an extremely loud raucous screech.

    http://www.hornbeamaviary.com
Jim and Katy McElroy returned to northern Ohio in the late 1970’s after having lived for several years in Perth, Western Australia. Soon after, to their delight, the pair of pet Greater Sulfur Crested cockatoos (C. galerita galerita) that they brought back with them produced youngsters . . . and Hornbeam Aviary was born. At Hornbeam Aviary, our goal has always been to produce a small number of healthy, well-socialized, parent-raised baby cockatoos from happy, unstressed parent birds. Instead of removing eggs for artificial incubation, we encourage our parent birds to feed and care for their chicks for four to six weeks or longer. Baby cockatoos raised in this manner are both wonderfully affectionate and refreshingly independent. They understand that they are birds, not people, and they grow up better able to cope with the complexities and puzzlements of living life as human companions. Our beautiful, healthy babies are raised in a large flight cage in our kitchen where they learn to interact with both their human caretakers and other baby cockatoos. They are permitted to wean at their own pace and only go to their new homes when we are certain they are ready. All of the baby cockatoos at Hornbeam Aviary come with lifetime technical support. Recently we have begun concentrating more on the less emotionally dependent cockatoo species such as Goffin’s, Bare Eyed, Citron Crested and Lesser Sulfur Crested because it is becoming apparent that Moluccans and Umbrellas often require more room, time, tolerance and commitment than even the most well-intentioned owners

    The Cockatoo
There are many varieties of Cockatoos. Some are not fit for pets so they will not be covered here. We will list those that are among the more common household companions. Umbrella Cockatoo
    (cacatua alba)
Location: Central and Northern Moluccan Islands and Indonesia.
    Size:18in
Color:White with yellow on under side of wings. A very loving an "cuddly bird", They are quite demanding for human attention and can be relentless in their attempts to receive it. They can be quite precocious and sharp as a tack. These birds are well known for learning tricks and perform well. Our U2 loves to play catch with a whiffle ball and will throw back to you. He loves to chase the ball on the floor and learned to put the ball through a hoop. He also enjoys cuddling under the covers in bed. They are less timid than other species and appear to do well with activity, however with activity come vocalization. Our's has learned to bark like the dogs when someone comes home. The Umbrella's are also a talking bird with usually limited vocabulary. They are a little more difficult to understand, but they seem to know exactly what they are saying. Screaming is common and very loud. Care should be taken early to prevent routine screaming for attention. The behavior is difficult to break and is the single most common reason their owners give them up to the next unsuspecting person.

His love for cockatoos is obvious and his mastery deserves this elegant presentation. One of Bill's many artistic strengths is his careful attention to habitats and bird-plant associations, which is sensitively portrayed in each painting. These wonderful birds of the forests and plains have all been painted in landscape format, allowing him to show more diverse compositions and postures.

The Bare-Eyed Cockatoos are also known as Little Corellas or Short-Billed Corellas in their homeland of Australia and New Guinea. They are medium-sized Cockatoos that range from 14 to 15 inches in length. The coloring of the Bare-Eyed Cockatoo is primarily white with varying amounts of peach in the face and chest and yellow under the tail. They have a large patch of skin around the eye, thus giving them the name "Bare-Eyed." Bare-Eyed Cockatoos are highly energetic, silly, extremely playful, and full of zest! They are known for their intelligence, talking ability, affectionate nature, and their friendliness towards everyone and anyone. They thrive on being the life of the party! These comical little clowns are often overlooked because they don't necessarily fit the image that most people have when they think of a Cockatoo. However, to those of us who know them up close and personal, a Bare-Eyed Cockatoo makes a wonderful companion. Black Palm Cockatoos
The Palm Cockatoo, also known as the Black Palm Cockatoo, is found in Australia on the tip of Cape York Peninsula. They are also found in New Guinea, the Aru Islands, and Indonesia. In the wild, Palms usually travel in pairs or in very small flocks.
