Cockatoos as Pets
A Cockatoo belongs to any of several crested parrots native to Australia and Northwestern Asia and the nearby islands. Cockatoos have powerful hooked bills, thick fleshy tongues and short, strong legs which all fit the common description of a parrot. However, they are the only parrots that have crests of long feathers that they can raise or lower.
Most Cockatoos are white but some are tinged with pink or yellow or have crests in other colors. In the wild, Cockatoos usually fly through treetops in small flocks, feeding on fruits, seeds and nuts. Several species of Cockatoos can be tamed but relatively few can be taught to talk. There are about 17 species of Cockatoos ranging from 12” to 27”long. Cockatoos are included in the list of birds commonly resold as adults. This is usually attributed to some behavior problems which prompted their owners to give them up, although this is not always the case. The particular behavior problem often pinpointed is screaming.

Basic Information

Cockatoos are large parrots that are native to Australia and the islands of the South Pacific. There are a few different species of Cockatoos that range in size from about 11 inches to 30 inches tall. They are very long lived, living 60-90 years in captivity. They have a bald patch on top of their heads covered with a crest that they can raise and lower. The crest's position is often an indication to the bird's mood. Cockatoos are powder-down birds, producing a dust from their feathers that can be quite heavy sometimes.
Intense Needs
Most Cockatoos are very intelligent, can be affectionate, and can have a lot of energy. They are generally quite vocal and loud. Due to their intelligence, Cockatoos are known for being able to escape from their cages, undo locks, and work through intricate puzzles. They love to chew and can destroy toys and other household objects very quickly. Their beaks are powerful and when aggressive, they can do serious physical damage to their caretakers. As with many species of parrots, Cockatoos often mate for life and bond very strongly to their caretakers as mates. This can be problematic because these birds expect a lot of physical and emotional attention from their mates, and these needs are often difficult to meet in captivity. Of all parrot species, I believe that Cockatoos require the most time and attention to meet their intense social and intellectual needs.

Cockatoos are beautiful birds in so many ways. They are affectionate, charming and full of personality. They are highly sensitive parrots, and in order for them to be happy, they need attention and affection. Some learn a few words, but what they lack in vocabulary, they make up for with their sweet and loving personalities. They must have this attention and affection in the appropriate amounts for them to be a good pet. Many new owners of cockatoos often spend too much time and undivided attention when they first buy them.
Cockatoos think this is wonderful and they become the "love sponges" , as they are often referred to. They want to be cuddled and handled all the time and do not develop any independence. They are very intelligent and can easily learn to be by themselves and play with their toys for hours on end. Most people have a life and cannot be there every minute of the day for their 'Too. They can still be a wonderful pet for decades. These bright birds will realize that their owner is there for them, because with their amazing abilty to understand, they will know they are secure and safe. Cockatoo
Cockatoos share many features with other parrots including the characteristic curved beak shape and a zygodactyl foot, with two forward toes and two backwards toes. They differ, however in a number of characteristics, including the often spectacular movable headcrest, the presence of a gall bladder and some other anatomical details, and their lack of the Dyck texture feather composition which causes the bright blues and greens seen in true parrots. Cockatoo species are also, on average, larger than the true parrots. Placement of the cockatoos as a separate family is fairly undisputed, but it is not resolved whether or not other living lineages of parrots (such as the lories) are as distinct as they are. SIZE
Length about 50 cm (20"), weight about 700 to 950 grams
      SEXING
The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo is monomorphic when young, but females may develop a lighter eye colour at around 8 or more years old.
      SUBSPECIES
Four subspecies are recognised, only two of which are native to Australia. These are the nominate subspecies, Cacatua galerita galerita , which is found in eastern Australia and is the one most common in aviculture, and C. g. fitzroyi , from northern and north-western Australia. C. g. galerita varies from fitzroyi by having a white eye ring rather than pale blue, by having a paler yellow colour to the ear coverts, and by having shorter crest feathers. The other two subspecies are Cacatua g. triton and Cacatua g. eleonora , which are only found in Indonesia and Papua-New Guinea to the north of Australia, and are not considered here.
      NATURAL OCCURRENCE
The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo is one of the icons of Australia's birds, instantly invoking images of the Australian bush. It is a common and widespread species, extending from Tasmania through Victoria and New South Wales to the northern most tip of Queensland, and though the northern part of the Northern Territory into the Kimberly area of Western Australia. Introduced populations are established near Perth, in Western Australia, and in New Zealand. The two Australian subspecies meet around the Gulf of Carpenteria, in northern Queensland, where their ranges overlap

    Macaws
    MACAWS
Macaws are some of the most intelligent and beautifully colored parrots. They are certainly the largest companion bird species. Although they are free - ranging in Mexico and Central and South America, most free - ranging species are considered threatened or endangered, and efforts to protect these birds have resulted in a ban on importation for pet purposes in the United States. High quality companion birds are available from breeders. Large macaws include Blue and Golds, Scarlets, Greenwings and Hyacinths; miniature macaws include Yellow - collars, Severes and Nobles.
What to Expect from Your Macaw
Macaws require a great deal of attention and living space. Blue and Gold Macaws have a mischievous nature and are the most family - oriented macaw species, even though they may be nervous around strangers. Although Scarlet Macaws tend to bond with an individual person, they can be untrustworthy and nippy with anyone. Green - winged Macaws are less intimidating and calmer but can be very loud. Macaws have limited ability to mimic words. Their vocalizations are expressed primarily as loud shrieks and squawks, especially in the early morning and late afternoon. Macaws are relatively difficult to breed (with the exception of Blue Golds) but the offspring are easy to hand raise. Macaws become aggressive and protective when fed and set up to breed. Many pet birds are not trained, are spoiled and fed foods that make them think they are going to breed and they become aggressive. This often escalates to feather picking. These reasons are the basis for not recommending big macaws as pets.

Is your cockatoo a male or a female?
In most cockatoo species, the gender can be determined by the color of the iris: those of adult males are black and adult females are reddish brown. However, this does not hold completely true in all individuals; therefore, endoscopy or laboratory methods may be desired to confirm the gender in breeding facilities. Males are known to occasionally brutalize or kill their mates, even in pairs that have been previously compatible.

    Cockatoos
There are 21 species of Cockatoos. All of them share several common characteristics: crest on the head, curved beak, zygodactyl feet (with two forward and two backward toes.) The shape and size of the crest differs according to the species. Some Cockatoo species have bright blue and green feathers; others are white, black, or pale-colored. Cockatoos are generally large birds, but the cockatiel, the smallest of Cockatoos, is a very small bird. The range of the Cockatoos is more restricted compared to other parrots. Cockatoos occur mostly in Australia and nearby islands: New Guinea, Indonesia, and smaller south Pacific islands. Wild birds are protected by the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.) They cannot be legally trapped and exported for pet trade. Still, many Cockatoos are caught and smuggled to the USA and Europe where they are very popular as pets.

Cockatoos There are as many as 17 species of Cockatoos. Most are white in colour, but others come in grays and pinks, blacks, and in the Palm's case, deep blue. They are primarily found in the Indonesian islands. Cockatoos make wonderful pets because of their sweet nature. Cockatoos love to be cuddled and bond very easily with their human owners. Cockatoos aren't top talkers. Most individuals say a few words, but many do not. A few Cockatoos become very good. Their voices don't have the tone and quality of an African grey's or Amazon's, but they're usually understandable enough.
Cockatoos are not usually picky eaters. Fruits, veggies, and pretty much everything else should be added to the diet daily. Most Cockatoos love sharing mealtimes with their "flock", and certain owners will provide their bird with his own plate! Low-lactose dairy foods like skim milk, yogurt, and most cheeses are usually great. Even meat can be fed, although beef and pork should only be fed in very small amounts; chicken and turkey is better. Most Cockatoos LOVE baths... Spray-baths being the usual preferred method. Well-raised Cockatoos are adorable; a hog for attention, a socialite , and just a pleasure to have around. On the other hand, badly-raised Cockatoos are a synonym for nightmare!

    Who are we?
In 1993, the "For the Love Of Parrots Refuge Society" (FLOPRS) was established by Society President and founder Wendy Huntbatch and Horst Neumann. Our Society operates the World Parrot Refuge, a special place that offers a permanent, loving home to abused, neglected and unwanted psittacines, and is also a home for loved parrots who are willed or given to the refuge due to the loss or infirmity of their owners. The refuge is home to a large and ever-growing parrot population, many of whom arrive in various states of emotional and physical distress. FLOPRS is a registered non-profit organization that specializes in rehabilitating these birds by giving them lots of love, a good diet, toys to help them learn to play and have fun and, above all, enough space to move about and feel a sense of freedom. Our feathered psittacine friends can spend the rest of their lives without fear of losing the security of their home and loved ones. The refuge is run by a volunteer program and a few paid staff members, all of whom play an important role in the care and nurturing of the birds.
