Well, if you were one of the dudes in Brendan and Emmett Malloy's OUT COLD, you could get a bear to lick a drunken guy's private parts. Of course, in the real world, leaving a passed-out guy in the snow overnight with his pants down would cause him to die of hypothermia. But Jon Zack's script has nothing to do with real life or comedy for that matter. The best that can be said of OUT COLD is that it is generally more lame than obnoxious. Funny it isn't. This is the movie that dares to ask, "Can you get an STD (sexually transmitted disease) from a bear?" You won't care enough to laugh or consider what the answer might be. Among other such would-be humorous lines is the epithet, "You fight like a retard!"

View other movie reviews Find a movie: Out Cold It's funny when worthless movies try to insert some sort of message or story in an attempt to redeem itself. In Out Cold , there is a minor story involving the commercialization of a mountain. The locals love it because it is their hangout, but John Majors (Lee Majors, Here Primary Suspect ) wants to turn it into the next Aspen, with modern equipment, swanky nightclubs, and a new name. Somewhere in the movie is a story about not selling out, standing tall, and embracing one's legacy. However, Out Cold is more an excuse to show lots of snowboarding and young people doing stupid things while drunk. This it not necessarily a bad thing, since Out Cold does have some amusing moments that make it far more enjoyable than it actually should be, but not good enough. The hero of the mountain is Rick Rambis (Jason London, Poor White Trash The Rage: Carrie 2 ), local snowboarding stud and, if all goes as he wishes, the eventual owner of the mountain. Together with his friends Anthony (Flex Alexander, She's All That The Apartment Complex ), object of lust Jenny (A.J. Cook

View other movie reviews Find a movie: Cold Creek Manor Although it's a pretty mean thing to say, sometimes people get what they deserve, especially if they are the character in Cold Creek Manor . This movie, a standard thriller populated with really stupid people, seems an odd choice for director Mike Figgis, who usually deals with more substantial material (often to varying degrees of success). The characters in the film are so dumb that it takes the viewer out of the film, forcing them to ponder how two idiots got so successful. The gist of the film is that Cooper and Leah Tilson hire ex-convict Dale Massie to fix up the house he believes was stolen from him. Yeah, that's a great situation to be in. Cooper (Dennis Quaid, Far From Heaven The Rookie ) and Leah (Sharon Stone, Beautiful Joe Simpatico ) decide that living in Manhattan is too dangerous for their young children. They find a sprawling piece of property for sale at an unbelievable price, Cold Creek Manor. Together with their children Kristen (Kristen Stewart, Panic Room The Safety of Objects ) and Jesse (Ryan Wilson), they fall in love with the house and move in. They need to do a lot of work, since it was untended for some years. To make things worse, Cooper and Leah are going through a tough time in their marriage. The new setting may help them out. Cooper is a documentarian, and the house is full of junk, so he decides to research its past occupants, perhaps for a documentary.

View other movie reviews Find a movie: Cold Mountain The Civil War is slowly coming to a close, and Inman dreams of returning home to Cold Mountain, North Carolina, where Ada Monroe waits for him. It's been a few years since they last laid eyes on each other, and what began as potential love is now a deep-rooted need and desire for one another. These themes of love, along with those of hatred and war are exactly what director Anthony Minghella ( The Talented Mr. Ripley The English Patient ) always finds himself drawn to. Here, he adapts Charles Frazier's Cold Mountain , a National Book Award winner and fan favorite. The core of Cold Mountain is a love story that is not quite there, gutting some of the rest of the film, which is told from two points of view. Inman (Jude Law, Road to Perdition A.I. ), a Confederate soldier, decides to desert and travel home, while at Cold Mountain, Ada (Nicole Kidman, The Human Stain The Hours ) tries to survive living on a farm.

This fact, however, turns out to be a double-edged sword for the expansive cast; while the actors do what they can, every role d own to the smallest is, on one level or another, filled by a recognizable face. The film stops being about the characters and their personal journeys and starts being a guessing game as to what established star will pop up in the next scene, spout off a half-dozen lines or so, and make their exit. It doesn't help that the central love story that is supposed to be the major pulling force of the plot comes off as undernourished and largely unconvincing. At almost every turn, "Cold Mountain" is an ill-conceived adaptation of the best-selling novel by Charles Frazier.

Well Worth Climbing: A Review of Cold Mountain
Sponsored Links Author By LordSlaytan Rating... Poster Cold Mountain begins with an epic battle in St. Petersburg where the Union Army commits one of the most tragic blunders ever know in military history. Within the Confederate ranks is Inman (Jude Law) who receives a near fatal wound, while trying to save the life of a friend from home. After the battle, Inman starts his long recovery in a military hospital where he gets a letter from his love back home. A volunteer reads it for him and he hears that his love is dealing with her own tragedy and only wants him to come home. After hearing this, Inman decides that after he recovers, he is going to desert and walk home. Seeing that his home at Cold Mountain is hundreds of miles away, it's obvious that it is going to be a very long and arduous journey.
The love back home at Cold Mountain, South Carolina is Ada (Nicole Kidman), a preachers (Donald Sutherland) daughter who has been brought to the country after leading a socialites life back in Charleston. Seen through a series of flashbacks is the budding romance between Ada and Inman and the power of their love at first sight developing between them. After that, the movie splits off to tell two different tales. One is the journey of Inman and the other is Ada's journey of independence.

78. Library, The Art Of Cold Reading
Article by James Randi about cold reading.
http://www.randi.org/library/coldreading/
The Art of "Cold Reading" The currently-popular "psychics" like Sylvia Browne, James Van Praagh, and John Edward, who are getting so much TV space on Montel Williams, Larry King, and other shows, employ a technique known as "cold reading." They tell the subjects nothing, but make guesses, put out suggestions, and ask questions. This is a very deceptive art, and the unwary observer may come away believing that unknown data was developed by some wondrous means. Not so. The readers have a way of leading the subject to believe that they knew something they didn't. Example: Reader: "Did your husband linger on in the hospital, or did he pass quickly?" Subject: "Oh, he died almost immediately!" Reader: "Yes, because he's saying to me, `I didn't suffer. I was spared any pain.'" It's strange that the reader (Van Praagh, in this example) had to ask that question..... We tested Sylvia Browne in 1989, on live TV, and she failed miserably. On that occasion, she was not allowed to speak to anyone in advance, or to be asked or told anything in advance. The audience was told to only answer "yes" or "no," when asked a DIRECT question, and Sylvia bombed out big-time. She blamed it all on bad vibrations.... Van Praagh and Edward have not responded to our offer to test themfor the million-dollar prize, even. So, you see, it's your perception of what's actually being done, rather that the reality of the procedure, and your ignorance of other subtle clues and methods, that misleads you in your observations of these "psychics."
