The National Higher Education Entrance Examination (or gaokao) is an academic examination held annually in the mainland of the People's Republic of China. This examination is a prerequisite for entrance into almost all higher education institutions at the undergraduate level. It is usually taken by students in their last year of secondary school, although there has been no age restriction since 2001. In 2006, a record high of 9.5 million people applied for tertiary education entry in China. 8.8 million of them (93%) are scheduled to take the national entrance exam; 27,600 (0.28%) have been exempted from standardized exams (保送) due to exceptional or special talent. The rest (0.7 million) will take other standardized entrance exams, such as those designed for adult education students.

Most colleges have a minimum score that they will accept for college entrance exams.
There are a number of things that you can do to help prepare for the exams. There are books available that you can use to study. Although the questions in the study books are not what are on the test, they help prepare you for the types of questions that ill be on the actual exams.
In conjunction with studying the entrance exam books, you can take a entrance exam prep class to help you prepare. Studies have shown that these prep classes can significantly improve college entrance exam scores. They don't tend to cost a lot of money and it is money well spent.
You can take a practice test. This will help you to see which areas are your strong points and which areas you need to work on. By concentrating on studying to improve your weaknesses you can improve you scores from the practice test to the real test.

Many study guides are avialble at a local bookstore or you can visit the ACT Prep site for suggestions. Illinois uses the ACT as part of the Prairie State Achievment Examination in the Spring for eleventh grade students. Colleges and some scholarship programs use the scores for admission and awards. Scores are based upon a composite range of 1-36. There is no penalty for wrong answers. An optional writing portion is available which some universities are starting to require of home school students. The test can be retaken, but many students do not see more than one point difference in their score. Students register online using Homeschool Code 969-999.  Local test centers include ISU, IWU and many local high schools.  A photo ID is required for admittance on test day. This has to be a drivers license, state ID, or school ID. Homemade school ID's are not acceptable unless notarized.

What are the differences between SAT and ACT?
SAT attempts to measure your aptitude and ability in the three areas of math, critical reading, and writing. The test includes a 60-minute writing section; a critical reading section with long and short reading passages; and a math section with algebra, geometry, operations, and probability. Each section is reported as a score on the scale from 200-800.
ACT attempts to measure specific knowledge and curriculum in the four areas of English, math, science, and reading. Scores are reported in the form of sub scale scores for each section and the composite score that ranges from 1 to 36. Currently the national average composite score is 21.
Students also have the option on the ACT to take a 30-minute writing section. This writing section complements the English section. Scores are reported the same as abo

There’s a terrible misconception that I or anybody else can provide you with some secret information that will gain you easy access to high scores on your college entrance exams. There is no quick and dirty trick, no pressure point on the body that will magically unlock your brain on test day, and no secret cheat. However, there are some very successful tried and tested strategies that when practiced as part of your daily routine will almost certainly guide you to top entrance exam scores. The adage, “Know yourself and your enemy,” is a loosely translated distillation of Sun Tzu’s famous book The Art of War . Written centuries ago, this treatise has come to be about so much more than warfare. Many modernists have applied Tzu’s wisdom and strategizing to almost every challenge one may face in life. In fact some of the world’s leading business moguls have attributed their successes to Sun Tzu’s principles. Why not apply the same commonsense to your SATs?

Cumulative knowledge HOW AND WHAT TO REVIEW Parts of Speech: http://www.lessontutor.com/ltgram9home.html Spelling: A test-taker may be given a sentence and told that there could be an error in it. The choices for correcting the sentence might include a spelling error. The test-taker must know if the word listed is spelled correctly or incorrectly. If it is incorrect, then the error is one of spelling. If the student believes that the word has been spelled correctly, then the error could be one of the other choices. A review of 12th grade spelling/vocabulary words could prove helpful. Many students make 3X5 study cards and flip through them casually for several weeks before the test. When a word continually is a problem, that card can be placed in a conspicuous place (like a bathroom mirror) so that it is viewed with its correct spelling every day. Punctuation and Sentence Structure: Algebra: Math concepts to review include basic operations using whole numbers, decimals, fractions, and integers. Square roots may be asked as calculated answers or estimations. The test-taker should be able to work problems using exponents, factors, ratios and proportions. The student will be asked to solve problems using algebraic expressions that contain variables. Quadratic equations will need to be factored. Functions, matrices, roots of polynomials, and complex numbers will also be covered, though not with as much frequency.
