COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMS
Regarding registration for the tests listed below: Frequently, these test registrations will require a code. The College Board states that all Arkansas homeschool students are assigned the same code for taking the PSAT, SAT, ACT, etc. The codes have been PSAT (Arkansas homeschoolers - only) - 990499, SAT - 970000, ACT - 969-999 . It should be listed on the registration as an option. The results of these tests will be sent to your home and to the schools you designate.
Note: Although the PSAT is not a college entrance exam, it is very beneficial for the reasons listed under the explanation. This test comes EARLY in the fall semester of the junior year, so many homeschoolers miss it. PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) www.collegeboard.com For the following College Entrance Exams, practice tests or classes are available and are highly recommended. Since colleges and scholarships rely so heavily on these tests, it is in the student’s best interest to enhance their skills at taking standardized exams. There are many free practice sites on the web. The student can also take classes, buy study guides, or buy computerized software that gives helpful tips and strategies, as well as giving practice in taking each type of test. Most students will take college entrance exams at least twice. Many colleges "superscore" - meaning that if a student takes an entrance exam multiple times, the college will take the highest score from each tested area and will add these together to get the final overall score. Because of this practice, it is often to a student's advantage to take the test multiple times.

    College Entrance Exams
Admission to a highly competitive college has never been more difficult. Inundated with thousands of applications, top universities accept less than one in five applicants, and elite universities around one in ten applicants. Given the high academic record of their applicant pool, colleges rely on the SAT and ACT to filter out the students most likely to succeed on their campus. Yet, for last year alone, the College Board reported that only 11% of test takers scored 650 or higher on the critical reading, and only 14% of test takers scored 650 or higher on the math. And grades do not guarantee success - for A students, the mean critical reading score was only 565 and the mean math score was only 581. The message is two-fold. First, high SAT scores are expected at even moderately competitive colleges. Second, students who register high SAT scores get help preparing. It is an "open secret" that students need to prepare for the SAT and ACT in order to score high. This should come as little surprise - students spend time studying for chapter tests and finals at school, and the SAT and ACT are big tests. The real question is how to prepare. We find that the least successful method of preparation is a short series of large classes. Students learn too differently to design a class that can address the individual testing needs of a diverse group of teenagers. The best method of preparation is in one-on-one settings with an instructor who has the ability and experience to identify different learning styles and translate years of test analysis into straightforward lessons customized to the strengths and needs of the individual student.

Requirements for Standardized College Entrance Examinations
All freshmen are required to take a U.S. standardized college entrance examination, regardless of your citizenship/visa status or whether you have attended secondary school in the U.S. or abroad. Transfer students are not required to take this exam. The Office of Admissions and Orientation will accept either the SAT I (Scholastic Achievement Test: Reasoning Tests) or the ACT (American College Test). You must take one or the other of these tests (it is not necessary to take both). These tests are available throughout the world, and should be taken well in advance of the intended starting term. SAT and ACT scores take 6-8 weeks after the test date to arrive at UM-Dearborn. You may take the test(s) more than once, and UM-Dearborn will consider only your highest composite score. Your score will be used as one factor in the admissions process. The standard requirement for U.S. students is a composite score of 22 on the ACT or 1030 on the SAT, but flexibility is possible in certain cases. If your secondary education has been completed partially or entirely abroad, and if English is not your native language, your individual circumstances will be considered when evaluating your test scores. For students with international backgrounds, the score required for admission in each case will depend on various other factors, such as high school courses and grades, and English proficiency test scores (if requested).
