The Spanish brought Catholicism African slaves , the feudal encomienda system, and a caste system that favored European-born whites. After independence from Spain, the criollos struggled to establish a pluralistic political system between conservative and liberal ideals. The conservatives supported the involvement of the Catholic Church in the state while liberals favored the separation of these. The conservatives managed to outsource public education to the Catholic Church and for many years the church controlled the country's education system. Both parties engaged in multiple civil wars resulting in a slow development of the country and the isolation of regions until the end of the 19th century. Ethno-racial groups maintained their ancestral heritage culture: whites tried to keep themselves, despite the growing number of illegitimate children of mixed African or indigenous ancestry. Colombian culture
The culture of Colombia lies at the crossroads of Latin America . Thanks partly to geography , Colombian culture has been heavily fragmented into five major cultural regions. Rural to urban migration and globalization have changed how many Colombians live and express themselves as large cities become melting pots of people (many of whom are refugees) from the various provinces that have hit Colombia through out its violent history, more recently is the displacement caused by the Colombian armed conflict to cities and other countries. According to a study in late 2004 by the Erasmus University in Rotterdam Colombians are one of the happiest people in the world. ; this despite its four-decade long armed conflict involving the government paramilitaries , druglords, corruption and guerrillas like the FARC and ELN . Colombians are sometimes called locombians for this paradox and for their joie de vivre

    Culture of Colombia
A culture is expressed through the art, literature, music, and cuisine of the region. Diversity is characteristic to the culture of Colombia. The cultures of different countries influenced the culture of Colombia. To know more, read on Owing to geography, Colombia contains five main natural regions namely, the Andes mountain ranges, the Caribbean Sea coastal region, the Pacific Ocean coastal region, the Llanos (plains) and the Amazon rain forest region. Colombia is located in the northwestern region of South America. This has led to a diversified Colombian culture. Moreover globalization and urbanization have changed the Colombian way of living.
Spanish culture has highly influenced the culture of Colombia. It brought in Catholicism, the feudal encomienda system, the African slaves and the system that favored the European-born whites. The Blacks mingled with the indigenous people of Colombia, carnivals giving them an opportunity to do so. This mix created a blend of cultures. The banishment of slavery from the society, and the industrialization of the 20th century after the establishment of the Republic of Colombia were the positivities seen by the Colombian society.
    Art of Colombia
The Colombian art ranges right from the sculptures and paintings of ancient times to the modern-day films, theatre and various other forms of art. Colombia has produced artists like Alejandro Obregon and Fernando Botero. Gold work, stonework and pottery constituted the pre-Colombian sculpture. The painting in Colombia was characterized by the pre-Columbian, the colonial, the Baroque and the Republican periods. Renaissance and medieval styles were the subjects of the paintings of the early colonial period. The Baroque period starting around 1600 AD bore the paintings featuring emotionalism, large gestures and populism. Mexican murals influenced the 20th century Colombian art. This period witnessed the world famous artists like Omar Rayo.

September 30, 2001 Araujo, ex-Colombian culture minister, slain By JARED KOTLER
Associated Press Writer BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) Former Culture Minister Consuelo Araujo, the wife of Colombia's inspector-general, has been found shot to death, six days after being kidnapped by leftist rebels, family members said Sunday. The body of the 62-year-old Araujo was found near the northern town of Valledupar. President Andres Pastrana called the family Saturday night to let them known the body had been discovered, said a family member who did not want to be identified for security reasons. The killing of the high-profile figure puts in jeopardy peace talks that President Andres Pastrana initiated three years ago with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of
Colombia, or FARC. While the talks have produced few results, the rebels have been accused of abuses including kidnappings, extortion, murder and drug trafficking. Araujo, a popular figure, was Pastrana's culture minister and the wife of Inspector-General Edgardo Mayo, who leads a watchdog branch in charge investigations of
    government officials.
