People and Culture The ethnic mixture in Colombia -stemming from indigenous, African and Spanish roots- have given Colombia a strong and wide range of cultural elements that can be appreciated on many aspects of everyday life. Music clearly represents the various influences, being a very important part of the colombian culture.
The music from the Andes region has indigenous as well as spanish influence, played mainly with string and wind instruments. In contrast, the music from the coasts has a clear african influence, with drum rhythms predominating. Salsa, cumbia and vallenato are very popular styles in the whole country, and have now reached global audiences. Colombian musicians such as Shakira and Carlos Vives are now well-known names internationally, promoting the country's rhythms around the world. Artist Fernando Botero has taken colombian painting and sculpture to the best-known museums and galleries of the world, while colombian literature is well represented with writers like Alvaro Mutis and Nobel prize winner Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Speaking of Abandonment
It just happens than on Monday, there was a report in El Tiempo about the increase in abandonment and therefore in adoptions in the department of Boyacá. It is a sad statement on the state of social affairs to recognize that fewer children are able to stay with their birth families. Yet, in a strange paradox, it marks a positive change for adoptive families who are waiting. On a personal note, I think that the most amazing thing is that social stigmas about adoption within Colombia are clearly changing. Here is a translation/summary, and a link to the article.
In the last 10 years, children placed for adoption from Boyacá has increased by 60%. In 2000, only 53 children from the department were placed for adoption. In 2009, there were 85, the majority of whom were placed with adoptive parents in or from Colombia.
According to Gloria Esperanza Medina Alba, Defensora de Familia (Family Advocate) for ICBF in Boyacá, the increase in the necessity for adoption has caused a great deal of worry for officials at ICBF. She stated, "The majority of children that have entered ICBF custody have done so on repeated occasions because of intrafamilial violence. Others enter the process because their parents are arrested, die, or simply cannot offer what is required for the children to grow in an adequate environment, which often occurs in the case of sex workers. "

There are of course many faces to Colombian Culture. Therefore, this page will be structured as follows: - Family

- Colombian Art
- Gabriel Garcia Marquez - Colombian Music - Colombian Education - Colombian News Family It's all about the family. Colombian culture is centered around it. As is also customary in Southern Europe, Colombians have very strong family-ties. It is typical for them to work together, run companies together and collaborate on a number of projects. Trust is certainly a factor and practical factors also explain part of this. For example, it is customary to share things so if your aunt owns a farm, whenever you visit, it's typical to be given eggs, plantains or whatever produce they happen to have. In return and depending on what skill or craft other family member have, they will give back and forth. General As a bit of popular culture, it might be fun to see the movie, Maria Full of Grace,

Thanks partly to geography, Colombian culture has been heavily fragmented into five major cultural regions. Rural to urban migration and globalization have changed how many Colombians live and express themselves as large cities become melting pots of people (many of whom are refugees) from the various provinces that have hit Colombia throughout its violent history, more recently is the displacement caused by the Colombian armed conflict to cities and other countries. According to a study in late 2004 by the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, Colombians are one of the happiest people in the world.[1]; this despite its four-decade long armed conflict involving the government, paramilitaries, drug lords, corruption and guerrillas like the FARC and ELN. Some insight into the rich and complex Colombian Culture.
Colombian culture is made up of its people and history and I think it's important right of the bat to mention just how warm and friendly Colombians are in general. Reading about Colombia's history may well provide some insight into its people but let's look at the present for now. Colombians have very strong family bonds, an aspect that permeates their lives in many ways. It's typical for instance, for family to run companies together and these are frequently passed down from generation to generation. Families help and support each other. Often, they have often or in fact do, experience economic hardship and therefore help each other out in times of need or barter between themselves. It took me a while to realize just how important this element of their culture is, but it really happens all the time. Aunts, uncles, siblings and family members with different skills and crafts step up and help out when it's needed.
An important aspect of Colombian culture is knowing how to enjoy life. In Norway and the U.S., people live to work, whereas here, the opposite is still very much the way of life. Having said that, especially in Antioquia - the region I am mostly familiar with - the local

Africans were imported from the 1520s into settlements along the northern coast of colonial New Granada. The Caribbean port city of Cartagena became the principal slave port for the colony. Blacks were used in agriculture and as personal servants in this region from early on, but they were mainly used in the mining areas. Prior to 1600, perhaps 100,000 slaves were imported, but from about 1560 the Spanish settlements in the gold-rich Cauca Valley and northern Antioquia increased the demand for slaves to supplement scanty and fast-declining Indian labor. The Pacific coastal region was colonized effectively from the late seventeenth century and became a major user of slave labor. Mining was the main occupation for slaves in New Granada. Both men and women worked in the open-cast mines, usually in cuadrillas
