Biography:
Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera
Home Library Miscellaneous Biographies Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera (1798-1878) was a Colombian statesman. Four times his country's president, he headed Colombia's most productive administration in the 19th century and through the expropriation of Church property put its economy on a capitalistic basis. Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera was born in Popayánon Sept. 26, 1798, to the leading family of southern Colombia. From 1820, when he became a captain in the patriot army, to 1830, by which year he was a general, Mosquera rose rapidly in military and administrative rank. An enthusiastic partisan of Simón Bolivar's dictatorship (1828-1830), at its fall he went on an extended tour of Europe and the United States (1831-1833). During 1834-1837 Mosquera was a leader of the congressional opposition to Francisco de Paula Santander's regime. Mosquera became secretary of war under President José lgnacio de Márquez in 1838. Mosquera's success as a battlefield commander in the civil war of 1839-1842, although marred by acts of cruelty , firmly established his military and political reputation.

Geography Home Page Colombia Introduction Colombia Background: Colombia was one of the three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others are Ecuador and Venezuela). A 40-year insurgent campaign to overthrow the Colombian Government escalated during the 1990s, undergirded in part by funds from the drug trade. Although the violence is deadly and large swaths of the countryside are under guerrilla influence, the movement lacks the military strength or popular support necessary to overthrow the government. An anti-insurgent army of paramilitaries has grown to several thousand strong in recent years, challenging the insurgents for control of territory and the drug trade, and also the government's ability to exert its dominion over rural areas. While Bogota steps up efforts to reassert government control throughout the country, neighboring countries worry about the violence spilling over their borders. Rucinque, H.F. Colombian Geography: Tradition and Current Status Research and scholarly writing in geography is a well-grounded tradition in Colombia. Nowadays, the country ranks high in the Hispanic American region in the trend of geographic development, but the practice of geography runs back to the very beginnings of the nation in the early sixteenth century. The pre-modern phase of that history has been aptly detailed by Acevedo Latorre A book entitled Summa de Geografa by Fernndez de Enciso was the first geographic work prepared in the New World shortly after the Discovery and then published in Spain in 1519. Caballero The contributions of individuals to the development of the discipline of geography have been limited but honorable. Two of them, Francisco Jos de Caldas (1768-1816) and Francisco Javier Vergara y Velasco (1860-1914), were highly reputed in the early days of geography in Colombia. Caldas, a self-educated geographer of the cosmographic school of the late eighteenth century, is generally regarded as the Colombian scholar (el Sabio) par excellence. A contemporary of Alexander von Humboldt, with whom he became acquainted in Quito in 1801, Caldas has been named the father of Colombian geography. Nonetheless, he did not attempt to build a school of geography as other fathers of the discipline have done in other countries (e.g., Vidal de la Blache in France, Davis in the USA, Deffontaines in Brazil, etc.). In 1816 the Spanish army crashed the first Republic that Caldas had helped to organize and he was shot by a royalist squad in Bogot at the age of 48. He had been associated with Mutis in the Botanical Expedition and conducted extensive research in climatology, biogeography, geodesy and mapping (cf., for example

    GEOGRAPHY
Colombia Table of Contents Located in the northwest corner of the South American continent, Colombia encompasses an area of more than 1.1 million square kilometers. It is the only country in South America with both Caribbean (1,760 kilometers) and Pacific coastlines (1,448 kilometers). Colombia also has international borders with five Latin American nations: Panama, Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador. There were no major outstanding international boundary problems between Colombia and its neighbors in the late 1980s. All of the borders had long been delineated, and most had been demarcated by surveys and the placement of markers, although tropical jungle terrain and hostile Indians had impeded survey operations in some areas along the borders with Venezuela and Brazil. Colombia and Venezuela did, however, dispute sovereignty over the seabed in the Golfo de Venezuela, an area of potential petroleum wealth. In addition to its mainland territory, Colombia possesses a number of small islands in both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The combined areas of all these islands do not exceed sixtyfive square kilometers.
