Behavioral Drugs Focus of Debate in Colorado Schools
By MICHAEL JANOFSKY ENVER A resolution recently passed by the Colorado Board of Education to discourage teachers from recommending behavioral drugs like Ritalin and Luvox has intensified a national debate over the growing use of prescription drugs for children. The resolution, the first of its kind in the country, carries no legal weight. But it urges teachers and other school personnel to use discipline and instruction to overcome problem behavior in the classroom, rather than to encourage parents to put their children on drugs that are commonly prescribed for attention deficit and hyperactive disorders. Proponents of the resolution, which passed by a 6-to-1 vote on Nov. 11, said they were motivated, in part, by evidence that they said suggested that dozens of violent crimes, including the massacre last spring at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., had been committed by young people taking psychotropic drugs. One of the teenage shooters at Columbine, Eric Harris, had been taking Luvox, an anti-depressant, although there is no evidence that the drug had anything to do with the shootings or that a teacher recommended the use of the medication.

The Wyoming Charter Schools Initiative and a conservative Casper legislator want to cut local school boards out of the job of deciding whether to authorize charter schools in the state's school districts. The issue will likely be considered by a charter schools subcommittee, to be created by the Legislature's Joint Education Interim Committee at a Sept. 20 meeting in Cody. Two Senate and two House members of the interim committee will be appointed to the subcommittee, which is expected to hold public hearings and report back to the education committee by November or December. Katherine Shelby, executive director of the Charter Schools Initiative, said one critical question that should be asked in public hearings by the subcommittee is, "Who authorizes charter schools in Wyoming?"

Not-so-noble Prizes Amuse and Bemuse Audiences
By Sagara Wickramasekara
STAFF REPORTER The audience chanted a cryptic phrase, and paper airplanes came from all directions the crowd was throwing them from the balconies. Beach balls bounced over the mass of people, including genetically engineered Texans, lawyers for and against heredity, the Harvard and MIT students side by side, and people lecturing on the general apathy of cats towards bearded scientists. A 7.03 lecture gone bad? A hack on Harvard? All out war in Boston? No, it was far more surreal. The chanting of “Ig Ig Ig Nobel!” continued as the 9th 1st Annual Ig Nobels got underway in Sanders Theatre at Harvard. Ig Nobel tradition continues This year marks the 9th time the Annals of Improbable Research (AIR) magazine has presented the 1st annual Ig Nobel Prize Ceremony. The ceremony celebrates research that “cannot or should not be repeated.” They are ostensibly named after another member of the Nobel family, the lesser-known Ignatius “Ig” Nobel. After bizarre parades and general mass confusion, Marc Abrahms, editor of AIR and Master of Ceremonies, welcomed everyone of us to Sanders Theater and the Ig Nobels, introduced the four Nobel Laureates and Ira Malone, who delivered the and extremely prestigious, well-prepared and carefully delivered welcome speech:
