Maps of Colorado Links to Historical Maps of Colorado Congress created the Territory of Colorado in 1861 in the center of the western half of the continental United States in the east-central portion of the Rocky Mountain region. The center of the state is approximately 1,500 miles west of the Eastern coast of the United States, 800 miles east of the Western coast, 650 miles south of the northern border with Canada and 475 miles north of the southern border with Mexico. Colorado is bounded on the east by the states of Kansas and Nebraska, on the north by Nebraska and Wyoming, on the west by Utah and on the south by New Mexico and Oklahoma. The boundary lines create an almost perfect rectangle, measuring approxiamtely 387 miles from east to west and 276 miles from north to south and covering 104,247 square miles, including 450 square miles of bodies of water. Colorado is the eighth largest state when measured in square miles area. Colorado is a diverse region of mountains, plateaus, canyons and plains. Generally, the eastern half of the state has flat, high plains and rolling prairies gradually rising westward to the front range foothills and the higher ranges of the Rocky Mountains. The Continental Divide runs from north to south through west central Colorado and bisects the state into the eastern and western slopes. The western half of the state consists of alpine terrain interspersed with wide valleys, rugged canyons, high plateaus and deep basins.

E-Mail This Article Published on Saturday, August 26, 2006 by the Progressive Colorado Geography Teacher Quits over Foreign Flag Dispute by Matthew Rothschild Eric Hamlin got off to a rough start at Carmody Middle School. In the very first week of class, he got a letter of reprimand and was placed on administrative leave for insisting on his right to display foreign flags in his classroom. And even though the school quickly reinstated him, he has decided not to return. Hamlin was hired to teach world geography to seventh graders at the school, which is in Jefferson County, Colorado. For the past eight years, he says he has taught in that district. He prepared his classroom by displaying the flags of Mexico, China, and the United Nations, as he has in previous classes without incident, he says. But when Assistant Principal Victoria Winslow came into his class on August 21, the day before school was to begin, and saw the flags, she told him to take them down. “That surprised me and caught me off guard,” he says. “I asked her why I had to take them down, and she said it was Jefferson County School District policy. I said I’d had the flags up before in Jefferson County, and if that was the policy, I had some issues with it. She left, and about an hour later she returned and said, ‘Oh, I’m sorry I was wrong. It isn’t district policy. It’s actually state law,’ and handed me a copy of a Colorado state statute.”

Before Colorado's statehood was established on August 1, 1876, many Plains Native Americans lived on the region's eastern plains and followed buffalo herds. However, in 1858, gold was discovered in the Rocky Mountains, and a flux of settlers eventually forced the indigenous tribal people onto reservations. Mesa Verde National Park is one small reminder of some of the land's original inhabitants, preserving ancestral Pueblo cliff dwellings in Colorado's southwest corner. Other national attractions include Dinosaur National Monument , where dinosaur fossils were discovered in 1909 by paleontologist Earl Douglass, and Rocky Mountain National Park , where Colorado's massive western mountain range is the focal point. As well as boosting the economy with precious metals, Colorado's Rocky Mountains lure skiers and snowboarders to the state's numerous ski resorts.
