Choosing a K-12 Online School: Things to Ask
Before enrolling your child or yourself in an online school take a few minutes to ask the following questions.
1. Is the school accredited? Sponsored by your local school district or state? Make sure the school is accredited by your local regional association. Accreditation is important because this means the school is regulated, has to meet specific/reviewed standards and will be accepted by other major institutions. If they are not approved, it may be in the process of scheduling one - ask.
2. How much is tuition? Are there any additional fees or costs? The cost should be comparable to regular universities maybe less.
3. What education/experience do your instructors/teachers have? The majority of junior or community colleges have a minimum of a M.A. degree in the subject they teach. The majority of university professors have a doctorate or Ph.D. in their area of expertise.
4. How large are the classes? How many student are the instructors responsible for?
5. Hardware requirements? Is there help in acquiring a computer? Some U.S. based K-12 charter schools subsidize a student's internet and hardware costs.

Assessing Energy Costs For Colorado Schools
  • Want to estimate how much money achieving your cost/energy reduction goals will provide?
  • Want to identify your most cost-/energy-efficient schools?
  • Want to identify your schools with the most potential for savings?
  • Need help setting energy cost or energy use reduction goals for your school?
  • The tool below can help! It can be used to answer these questions for Colorado schools. The tool will allow you to estimate cost savings for achieving your goal. Your goal may be energy cost or energy use reduction, or simply an increased performance rating among peers (see options under GOALS). The tool rates your school based on its annual expenditures for energy. Efficient schools that pay a minimal amount annually for their energy use score high. Inefficient schools having annual energy expenditures higher than normal (those with the greatest potential for substantial energy cost reductions) score low. The tool normalizes for differences in energy costs across schools. Thus, the fact that your school may pay more for each electric kWh or natural gas therm than a neighboring school is normalized out of the rating. The tool will help you spot those exceptional schools and those that can most benefit from energy-related improvements. To use the tool, you will need:

    Joining the Council
    Why Join the Council?
Depending on who you are, there are different advantages to joining Colorado Council. The overriding reasons are:
  • that Colorado high school counselors, associate members, and the colleges/universities collaborate and coordinate major college preparation and transition activities so as to provide the greatest impact with the least duplication throughout the state, and that professional development opportunities are available throughout the year.
  • The Colorado Council has become a model not-for-profit organization for many other states throughout the country who are looking for a collaborative and efficient way to get college admissions and financial aid information to families and students while supporting the professional development needs of its members. What are the Benefits of Membership?
    K-12 Schools
All Colorado public and private K-12 schools, and vocational/technical schools are eligible to be members by submitting an application and paying annual membership dues. Although membership is open to all Colorado K-12 schools, virtually all are high schools since they are most involved with college preparation and transition activities.

Commercial Buildings The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has benchmarking tools available for 10 prominent U.S. building types. These tools address both electric and non-electric fuels simultaneously (whole-building energy use) within each tool and also normalize for the key drivers of energy use specific to each building type. They represent the state-of-the-art in energy performance benchmarking for commercial buildings. Portfolio Manager is EPA's tool that allows users to track the energy performance of and benchmark buildings within their entire portfolio. Portfolio Manager operates on monthly energy use data. It is also used to support the qualification process for the Energy Star performance recognition available from EPA for high-performance buildings. This tool is widely used by both the private and government sectors. Go to EPA's Portfolio Manager Tool Target Finder is EPA's tool that allows a user to estimate an energy performance benchmark or target for a new building design. With this in hand, a user can test their design options toward achieving a desired performance target. Target Finder operates on annual energy use data.
