Like most other holidays, people enjoy creating crafts to celebrate. The following are some fun and creative ideas for Columbus Day crafts.
    Shadow Box
A shadow box is like a three dimensional scrapbook page. For this project, you will need a shoebox. The bottom of the shoebox will be the setting for your scene (the bottom will be stood upright, your scene stretching across the width of the box. The lid will be placed underneath to help stand it up). Following are suggestions for making your scene.
Inside your shoebox, create a scene of waves and sky (to represent the Atlantic Ocean). This can be done with paint, construction paper or card stock. Then make three origami sailboats: the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria (instructions on how to make the boats can be found at http://www.ehow.com/how_5575_make-origami-sailboat.html).

  • globe image by Christopher Meder from Fotolia.com Create your own globe to celebrate Columbus's voyage. Children are taught at a young age that Columbus sailed the ocean blue in the year 1492. His discovery of the New World is celebrated every year in the U.S. on the second Monday in October. Celebrating his explorations leads to some exciting arts and crafts for children to acknowledge the holiday.
  • Globe Craft
  • Older children can create their own globes. Blow up a circular balloon and tie the end. Tear newspaper into strips, dip them in liquid starch or white glue and lay them across the balloon until it is entirely covered. Apply three or four layers of newspaper, and let dry for a few days. Paint the globe white. Once it's dry, paint the continents and oceans as people believe they existed in Columbus's day.
  • Indian Canoe
  • Columbus encountered many Native Amercans, or Indians, in the New World. Fold a six-inch square of brown paper in half, and open it. About three quarters of an inch on both sides of the center fold, make two more upward folds that form a W shape. Fold the paper together. Draw curves on the sides to make a canoe shape and cut it out. Punch holes along the sides and push down the folds to make the canoe floor. Weave yarn through the holes on the sides and tie them in place to make a standing canoe. Create Indians out of Play-Doh to place inside the canoe.

      Do you like this story?
Folded newspaper boats often come to mind when thoughts of Columbus Day drift to childhood.  You may have remembrances of making boats as a child out of old newspapers which could also easily be transformed into a hat.  This year, you can make an even fancier, yet still very easy-to-make boat.  The St. Louis Children's Craft Examiner has published an easy craft that can be used for children in elementary or on up.  She gives you step-by-step instruction on how to make your own ship. For Columbus Day Craft Instructions
Also, get creative with her twist on play dough for the fall: For Columbus Day Craft instructions
You can find all you need for this craft and the play dough at local Michaels or Hobby Lobby and in your very own kitchen. Once your child has built their own ship, you can pretend to set them sail while learning about the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria.  If you want to make an entire fleet, you may find it easier to resort to a simple old-fashioned newspaper boat.  You can recycle your weekend St. Louis Post Dispatch or Journal that you've already read.
