Walking down the streets of Shanghai you can hardly feel the difference from Hong Kong, Taipei, or Chinatown, Los Angeles. The streets are wide and always jammed with automobiles. The shops are well decorated and well-lighted with the colorful, dizzying neons. Young men and ladies are either crowding the KFC's or McDonalds' or strolling the streets armed with either their "Walk-a-bouts" or mobile phones. The local music hall is featuring some Philharmonic orchestra from either Vienna or Philadelphia. Inside the German Bars, at least 1,000 customers jam pack them nightly to enjoy dancing to a rock band from America and the German beer. Shanghai is the

I've enjoyed a lot of the columnists and columns and... well let's just say even Ms Paglia's rampant narcissism aligns with what is actually right and reasonable from time to time. And I can often tell that this site emanates from Planet 'Frisco- a place I dearly love despite the fact that it is so wrapped up in its Own Importance it believes Oakland is as far away as Newark, New Jersey- as opposed to, say, the one in Alameda Co. But I digress... I read a lot more stuff here than I respond to, and would like to add to the chorus of hosannas for Glenn Greenwald. I don't respond to his columns because, really, no response is necessary. He succinctly and consistently lays out airtight rationales for whatever case he's making, and he happens to be right. To my knowledge no-one else out there has been such a relentless and right-on champion of the people against the government's nascent fascism, and perhaps more importantly, the press's part in enabling it. Beyond that- the Letters to the Editor section here is often entertaining and informative- there's a better 1st rate writer/thinker-to-troll and idiot ratio here than I've come to expect on a web site where anyone can put their 2 cents in.

We are refugees, but we are safe.
And, thank God, we are much better off than most our fellow refugees: in a house with running water, a stove, a washer and dryer, a computer, telephone service and a pool (I am tempted to add, “none of
which we looted from the neighborhood Wal-Mart,” but I’ll resist.)
“We” are my wife, Kathy, and I; son Bob; daughter Abby; her husband, Neil; and their five-week-old infant, Sullivan; Shadow, our faithful golden retriever; and six cats, four belonging to Kathy and me and two belonging to Neil and Abby. We are all bedding down in the Pensacola house of Neil’s mother and her husband and their anti-social, deaf dachshund who considers anything new on the floor a potential
pee target.
Daughter Mary fled to Dallas with a college friend and is staying at her parents’ house.

LLOYD GRAY: To stimulate thinking is why this page exists by Lloyd Gray/NEMS Daily Journal Nems360.Com 7 months ago In the chair where I sit, I answer a lot of phone calls and e-mails from readers – most with complaints or questions, some with suggestions, and even a few with compliments.
It’s gratifying to know the extent of readers’ engagement with the newspaper and their strong feelings about what’s in it.
It’s also fair to assume that most people, at one time or another, will be angered by something they see or read on our editorial page.
We’re not aiming for that. The primary purpose of our editorial page is to stimulate thinking about important issues, as well as to provide reflections on life in general. A newspaper has an obligation to offer a diverse sampling of opinion, and we work at getting different perspectives on the page.
I’m often asked why the Journal would run a particular column or political cartoon, and the implication is that the editors must agree with it if it was published. That’s not the case; there are many opinions expressed on our pages that our editorial page editor, Joe Rutherford, and I don’t agree with, not to mention other members of the staff. And the ones we disagree with are often different, because everyone here at the paper hardly thinks alike about everything.
