Understanding Compost
What is compost? Compost is dark in colour, sweet smelling and nutrient rich material. Compost is more than just an important addition to soil – it is absolutely crucial. Compost is a material created by nature. Back to Top What is composting? Composting is the decomposition of plant remains and other once-living materials to make an earthy, dark, crumbly substance that enriches soil. It is a process of recycling your kitchen and garden wastes, and is a critical step in reducing the volume of garbage needlessly sent to landfills for disposal. Composting is not a new idea. In the natural world, composting is what happens as leaves pile up on the forest floor and begin to decay. Eventually, nutrients from the rotting leaves are reclaimed by living roots. This completes nature’s recycling process. Back to Top How old is the composting practice?

Biodegradable Packing Peanuts
Posted in Articles Biodegradable Recycling by admin on February 10, 2010. Packing Peanuts have always been fun to play with. After a box of some random or needful item(s) arrive from one shipping source or another; often packing peanuts would be inside. Children get hours of enjoyment out of jumping in them, and scattering them about in smaller hidden piles like mice harvesting cat food. These packing peanuts are now biodegradable. It often is impossible to completely clean these kinds of kid made messes. This method won’t work with packing peanuts. They get scattered over lawns, earthen floors of wooden areas under tree forts, in abandoned storm shelters that are now kid forts. If a gardener digs down far enough in a neighbourhood that has been built over a pre-existing trash heap: Discarding packing material and other things surface over time in the garden. Before biodegradable alternatives started being offered: these light weight packing peanuts were the environmental bane of every shipping and freight yard in America.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Redirected from Composting Jump to: navigation search Compost Compost (pronounced /ˈkɒmpɒst/ or /ˈkɒmpoʊst/ ) is composed of organic materials derived from plant and animal matter that has been decomposed largely through aerobic decomposition . The process of composting is simple and practiced by individuals in their homes, farmers on their land, and industrially by cities and factories. Compost can be rich in nutrients. It is used in gardens landscaping horticulture , and agriculture . The compost itself is beneficial for the land in many ways, including as a soil conditioner , a fertilizer , addition of vital humus or humic acids , and as a natural pesticide for soil. In ecosystems, compost is useful for erosion control, land and stream reclamation, wetland construction, and as landfill cover (see compost uses

Composting as a recognized practice dates to at least the early Roman era since Pliny the Elder (AD 23-79) who refers to compost in his writings. Traditionally, composting was to pile organic materials and let them stand for about a year, or until the next planting season, at which time the materials would be ready for soil application. The main advantage of this method is that little working time or effort is required from the composter and it fits in naturally with agricultural practices in temperate climates. Disadvantages (from the modern perspective) are that space is used for a whole year, some nutrients might be leached due to exposure to rainfall, and disease producing organisms, some weed, weed seeds and insects may not be adequately controlled.

Composting
Composting turns household wastes into valuable fertilizer and soil organic matter.
In Your Backyard
All organic matter eventually decomposes. Composting speeds the process by providing an ideal environment for bacteria and other decomposing microorganisms. The final product, humus or compost, looks and feels like fertile garden soil. This dark, crumbly, earthy-smelling stuff works wonders on all kinds of soil and provides vital nutrients to help plants grow and look better. Decomposing organisms consist of bacteria, fungi, and larger organisms such as worms, sow bugs, nematodes, and numerous others. Decomposing organisms need four key elements to thrive: nitrogen, carbon, moisture, and oxygen. For best results, mix materials high in nitrogen (such as clover, fresh grass clippings, and livestock manure) and those high in carbon (such as dried leaves and twigs). If there is not a good supply of nitrogen-rich material, a handful of general lawn fertilizer will help the nitrogen-carbon ratio. Moisture is provided by rain, but you may need to water or cover the pile to keep it damp. Be careful not to saturate the pile. Turning or mixing the pile provides oxygen. Frequent turning yields faster decomposition.
Getting Started
Many materials can be added to a compost pile, including leaves, grass clippings, straw, woody brush, vegetable and fruit scraps, coffee grounds, livestock manure, sawdust, and shredded paper. Do not use diseased plants, meat scraps that may attract animals, and dog or cat manure which can carry disease. Composting can be as simple or as involved as you would like, and depends on how much yard waste you have, how fast you want results, and the effort you are willing to invest.

Americans generate about 210 million tons (231 million short tons) of trash, or solid waste , each year. Most of this trash (57 percent) gets placed in municipal landfills . About 56 million tons (27 percent) is recovered through either recycling, in the case of glass, paper products, plastic or metals, or through composting, in the case of yard waste. Composting is a method for treating solid waste in which organic material is broken down by microorganisms in the presence of oxygen to a point where it can be safely stored, handled and applied to the environment. Composting is an essential part of reducing household wastes. It can be done inexpensively by every household and produces a product

    The Dirt on Composting
When I was a little kid I was always intrigued by the alchemists those medieval scientists desperately trying to turn lead into gold. Alchemists never succeeded, but you can turn yard and kitchen scraps into "gardener's gold" by composting.
Montana, where I live, has a shorter than short growing season that's more attuned to cultivating tundra than growing tomatoes. The season is so short that many experienced growers start seeds indoors with grow lights to get a jump on Mother Nature. I know a woman who tried for years to grow decent tasting tomatoes. They always turned out puny, mealy and well, not very good! In other words, tomatoes only their cultivator could love. Last year, she picked up some organic fertilizers and finally decided to mix some organic compost into her soil for a little extra umph. It worked so well that they grew big and beautiful and caught the attention of someone who actually stole the crop out of the woman's back yard. The gal was so miffed she actually filed a police report about it!

Background Simply stated, composting is the biological decomposition of the organic constituents of wastes under controlled conditions. The term "decomposition" is used instead of "stabilization", because when applied to a practical usage, the process is rarely carried on to the point at which the waste is completely stabilized. the term "biological" distinguishes composting from other types of decomposition, such as chemical or physical. Organic is applicable because, with few exceptions, only the organic portion of wastes is subject to biological breakdown. A very important term in the definition of composting is "controlled". It is the application of control that distinguishes composting from the natural rotting, putrefaction, or other decomposition, that takes place in an open dump, a sanitary landfill, in a manure heap, or in an open field. Principles Probably all of the principles involved in composting wastes can be traced to the single all inclusive fact that composting is a biological process. Two broad inferences can be drawn from this fundamental: (1) Composting has the limitations of biological systems; and (2) The process is affected by the basic environmental conditions that influence all biological activity.

Yard trimmings and food residuals together constitute 26 percent of the U.S. municipal solid waste stream. That's a lot of waste to send to landfills when it could become useful and environmentally beneficial compost instead! Composting offers the obvious benefits of resource efficiency and creating a useful product from organic waste that would otherwise have been landfilled.
