Both Envirolet and Santerra Green systems have more features than competing composting toilets, such as the patented Automatic Six-Way AerationTM, which speeds up the composting and evaporation process through forced air, heat and natural microbe action. Each product line comes in non-electric, 12VDC battery and AC electric models and offers both waterless and low water options. Popular applications of the Sancor product line include homes, cottages, cabins, work shops, basements, garages, pool cabanas or any location where sanitation is required.

Why Compost?
Recycling the organic waste of a household into compost allows us to return badly needed organic matter to the soil. In this way, we participate in nature's cycle, and cut down on garbage going into burgeoning landfills.
Why Compost With Worms?
Worm composting is a method for recycling food waste into a rich, dark, earth-smelling soil conditioner. The great advantage of worm composting is that this can be done indoors and outdoors, thus allowing year round composting. It also provides apartment dwellers with a means of composting. In a nutshell, worm compost is made in a container filled with moistened bedding and redworms. Add your food waste for a period of time, and the worms and micro-organisms will eventually convert the entire contents into rich compost. The following information is based on the experiences of a network of worm composters linked to City Farmer, Vancouver, and the excellent and practical book:

  • Composting is the controlled breakdown of biodegradable yard and kitchen wastes.
  • Compost is generally dark in color, resembles topsoil, and makes a useful soil conditioner.
  • Success in composting depends upon sufficient moisture and oxygen as well as proper amounts of carbon and nitrogen.
Recommended Compostable Materials
  • Yard Wastes: leaves, grass clippings, trees, plan/shrub trimmings, wood chips/sawdust, garden trimmings
  • Kitchen Wastes: coffee grounds, tea bags, raw vegetable scraps, fruit skins/cores/rinds, corn husks
Materials that should not be composted According to the Iowa City Code, the following materials are not allowed in compost piles. These materials easily attract animals and emit odors and should be avoided: Meat, Bones, Fats, Grease, Oils, Dairy Products, and Raw manure. Choosing a container To prevent materials from being blown away, a container or enclosure of some sort must be used. For example:

COMPOSTING: THE BASICS
Composting is the transformation of organic material (plant matter) through decomposition into a soil-like material called compost. Invertebrates (insects and earthworms), and microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) help in transforming the material into compost. Composting is a natural form of recycling, which continually occurs in nature.
An ancient practice, composting is mentioned in the Bible several times and can be traced to Marcus Cato, a farmer and scientist who lived in Rome 2,000 years ago. Cato viewed compost as the fundamental soil enhancer, essential for maintaining fertile and productive agricultural land. He stated that all food and animal wastes should be composted before being added to the soil. By the 19th century in America, most farmers and agricultural writers knew about composting.

Tips for home composting
Why Make Compost?
Compost loosens clay soils and helps sandy soils retain water. Adding compost improves soil fertility and stimulates healthy root development in plants. The organic matter provided in compost provides food for microorganisms, which keeps the soil in a healthy, balanced condition. Nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus will be produced naturally by the feeding of microorganisms, so few if any soil amendments will need to be added. Most gardeners have long understood the value of this rich, dark, earthy material in improving the soil and creating a healthful environment for plants. Understanding how to make and use compost is in the public interest, as the problem of waste disposal climbs toward a crisis level. Our hands our being forced to deal creatively with our own yard waste, as one by one, cities are refusing to haul off our leaves and grass clippings. About one third of the space in landfills is taken up with organic waste from our yards and kitchens, just the type of material that can be used in compost. With a small investment in time, you can contribute to the solution to a community problem, while at the same time enriching the soil and improving the health of the plants on your property.

Composting biodegrades organic waste. i.e. food waste, manure, leaves, grass trimmings, paper, wood, feathers, crop residue etc., and turns it into a valuable organic fertilizer. Composting is a natural biological process, carried out under controlled aerobic conditions (requires oxygen). In this process, various microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi, break down organic matter into simpler substances. The effectiveness of the composting process is dependent upon the environmental conditions present within the composting system i.e. oxygen, temperature, moisture, material disturbance, organic matter and the size and activity of microbial populations. Composting is not a mysterious or complicated process. Natural recycling (composting) occurs on a continuous basis in the natural environment. Organic matter is metabolized by microorganisms and consumed by invertebrates. The resulting nutrients are returned to the soil to support plant growth.
