What to Compost
Now that you're ready to start making compost, you need to know what organic materials can and cannot be used in the compost bin or pile.
Composting Ingredients
Organic waste is the best raw material to make compost from. This can come from your garden, your kitchen (visit Starbucks' page on composting with coffee ) and even your home at large.
Note: According to the United States EPA , yard trimmings and food residuals together constitute 23 percent of the U.S. municipal solid waste stream. That's a lot of waste to send to landfills when it could become useful and environmentally beneficial compost instead!
Ingredients that can make good compost include: Materials to Compost Browns = High Carbon Greens = High Nitrogen Ashes, wood Bark Cardboard, shredded Corn stalks Fruit waste Leaves Newspaper, shredded Peanut shells Peat moss Pine needles Sawdust Stems and twigs, shredded

Urban Composting
By Rogue Parrish eHow Contributor updated: October 29, 2010 I want to do this! What's This? A small patch of urban land can host a area for compost. Paul Viant/Stockbyte/Getty Images Urban composting differs only a little from suburban and rural composting. City gardens may have to work harder to discourage rats instead of raccoons. Still, in community gardens and small yards, city residents find the space and time to compost organic materials.
Types
  • Urban composting can involve a traditional bin of two to three sections if space permits. Or gardeners can move composting indoors, using red wiggler worms, Eisenia fetida, for speedier composting requiring only a storage tote or commercial stacking bin in the corner of the kitchen.
  • Considerations
  • Traditional outdoor bins allow easy access for rodents, Canada's Office of Urban Agriculture states. Outdoor urban bins will likely need rodent proofing, which entails using metal or plastic material with lids or wood reinforced with wire mesh. The Washington, D.C., government's Green.DC website recommends making a compost bin out of a trash can, punching aeration holes in it with a hammer and nails and placing it on cinder blocks to deter rodents.

Composting - helping you to Grow Your Own
Making and using compost is the cornerstone of organic gardening - if you want to 'Grow Your Own', there's no better place to start. The finished product is rich, dark, crumbly and sweet-smelling. It is made of recycled garden and kitchen waste, and can also include paper products. It is used to feed and condition the soil and in making potting mixes. Around 40 per cent of the average dustbin contents are suitable for home composting so it helps cut down on landfill too. Making compost is often considered to be complex but all you need to do is provide the right ingredients and let nature do the rest - however, a little know-how will help you make better compost, more efficiently.

A composting toilet is an aerobic processing system that treats excreta, typically with no water or small volumes of flush water, via composting or managed aerobic decomposition. This is usually a faster process than the anaerobic decomposition at work in most wastewater systems, such as septic systems Composting toilets are often used as an alternative to central wastewater treatment plants ( sewers ) or septic systems. Typically they are chosen (1) to alleviate the need for water to flush toilets, (2) to avoid discharging nutrients and/or potential pathogens into environmentally sensitive areas, or (3) to capture nutrients in human excreta. Several manufactured composting toilet models are on the market, and construct-it-yourself systems are also popular. These should not be confused with pit latrines (see latrine pit latrine , and arborloo or tree bog ), all of which are forms of less controlled decomposition, and may not protect ground water from nutrient or pathogen contamination or provide optimal nutrient recycling.

Composting Worms in Grand Prairie, Texas
By Carrie Terry eHow Contributor updated: October 29, 2010 I want to do this! What's This? Many flowers enjoy the rich acidity of organic matter. Design Pics/Valueline/Getty Images When you plant and maintain a flower or vegetable garden, it's important to consider aspects like soil acidity and nutrition. Plants, flowers, vegetables and fruit all require 13 minerals and vitamins to grow, bloom and fruit, and most fail if they don't have rich, nutritious earth. Although many people purchase additions like compost and fertilizer at home and garden shops, efficient, green gardeners realize that there's a better option. Home composting allows you to recycle garden and kitchen scraps while feeding your plants. Adding worms to the compost pile boosts the nutrition level tremendously, but adds some additional considerations. Difficulty: Moderately Easy
