    Composting Yard and Food Wastes
Composting is important because 20% or more of household waste is organic materials that can be composted, rather than disposed, thus saving landfill space ( and money on your trash bill !). Compost is a valuable soil amendment that will help your plants thrive. Compost helps your landscape retain water and nutrients better, and that means you can irrigate and fertilize less in areas treated with compost. Each player is dealt eight cards and by drawing and discarding cards in turn, player progresses toward the perfect compost ratio.

    Bin/Pile Information
Composting can be practiced in most backyards in a homemade or manufactured composting bin or simply an open pile (some cities do require enclosed bins). Businesses, schools, and other facilities can also easily compost. Contact your city or county government for information about free composting workshops and discounted or free composting bins. Homemade bins can be constructed out of scrap wood, chicken wire, snow fencing or even old garbage cans (with holes punched in the sides and bottom). Manufactured bins include turning units, hoops, cones, and stacking bins. These can be purchased from retail or mail-order businesses. Take the time to consider your options and then select a bin that best fits your needs. If you would prefer to build your own bin, you can get instructions from CalRecycle publication # (follow the link to order this free publication).

Basic Guide to Worm Composting

and Josie Martens
Why Compost?
Recycling the organic waste of a household into compost allows us to return badly needed organic matter to the soil. In this way, we participate in nature's cycle, and cut down on garbage going into burgeoning landfills.
Why Compost With Worms?
Worm composting is a method for recycling food waste into a rich, dark, earth-smelling soil conditioner. The great advantage of worm composting is that this can be done indoors and outdoors, thus allowing year round composting. It also provides apartment dwellers with a means of composting. In a nutshell, worm compost is made in a container filled with moistened bedding and redworms. Add your food waste for a period of time, and the worms and micro-organisms will eventually convert the entire contents into rich compost. The following information is based on the experiences of a network of worm composters linked to City Farmer, Vancouver, and the excellent and practical book:

Mow your lawn often and let the clippings lie. This is the best use for grass clippings. Composting is another solution. Composting is a practical and convenient way to handle yard trimmings such as leaves, grass, thatch, chipped brush, and plant cuttings. It can be easier and cheaper than bagging or paying to have them removed. Compost also improves your soil and the plants growing in it. If you have a garden, a lawn, trees, shrubs, or even planter boxes, you have a use for compost.
Why Does Compost Make Soil Healthier?
Compost returns organic matter to the soil in a usable form. Organic matter in the soil improves plant growth by: stimulating the growth of beneficial microorganisms, loosening heavy clay soils to allow better root penetration; improving the capacity to hold water and nutrients particularly in sandy soils; and adding essential nutrients to any soil. Improving your soil is the first step toward improving plant health. Healthy plants help clean air, conserve soil, and beautify landscapes.

Quick Facts...
  • Composting yard waste recycles nutrients back into the yard and saves landfill space.
  • Composting reduces yard waste volume by 50 to 75 percent.
  • Compost made with manure is questionable for use in food Gardens due to newer strains of bacteria that cause food-borne illnesses.
  • The microorganisms that break down plant wastes require favorable temperatures, moisture and oxygen.
  • Compost can be used as a soil amendment and a mulch.
All yards produce waste from pruning, lawn mowing and other routine plant care activities. Composting is a way to reduce the volume of organic wastes and return them to the soil to benefit growing plants. Organic matter improves the drainage and aeration of clay soil. Compost can be thought of as a separator that "shoulders apart" tightly packed clay particles to allow water and air to enter. Composting helps sandy soil hold water and nutrients. Compost holds moisture "like a sponge" and releases fertilizer nutrients slowly. It also increases the activity of earthworms and other natural soil organisms that are beneficial to plant growth. Note: Compost is a soil amendment, not a fertilizer. It contains limited plant nutrients.
Making Compost
To make traditional compost, alternate different types of shredded plant materials in 6- to 8-inch layers. Layering helps compost reach the correct nitrogen balance. Use equal parts by volume of dry and green plant materials in the overall mix. Use caution when you add layers of fine green plant wastes such as grass clippings. Grass mats easily and prevents water from moving through the mass. Use 2-inch layers of fine materials or process them through a machine shredder. Alternate fine materials with woody plant prunings to prevent clogging the machine and to create an equal balance of dry and green materials.

Composting
Introduction
Composting is the biological decomposition of organic waste such as food or plant material by bacteria, fungi, worms and other organisms under controlled aerobic (occurring in the presence of oxygen) conditions. The end result of composting is an accumulation of partially decayed organic matter called humus. Composting with worms, also known as vermiculture, results in nutrient-loaded worm castings.
Why Compost?
  • It's easy It creates a useful soil enricher It is an environmentally sound way of reducing yard waste
Yard waste is such materials as leaves, grass clippings, brush, and prunings. Some states, including Florida, have banned yard waste from landfills. Leaves and grass clippings can be used as mulch in your garden or landscape. Yard waste that will be picked up should be bundled or bagged.

Most organic waste can be recycled by worms!
-Vermicast is a rich organic fertiliser
-Bacteria in vermicast convert existing soil nutrients into plant-soluble form.
The benefits of worms in your garden are:
-Worms produce more vermicast.
-Worms move through the soil creating channels that greatly improve moisture retention, aeration and soil structure.
-Worms constantly turn the soil evenly distributing nutrients and preventing matted roots.
