It is the technical drawings and functional description of all design requirements (especially speeds and interconnections), it is how to design and implement various parts of a computer — focusing largely on the way by which the central processing unit (CPU) operates internally and how it accesses addresses in memory It can be defined as the science and art of selecting and interconnecting hardware components to create computers that meet functional, performance and cost goals. Computer architecture includes at least three main subcategories:
  • Instruction set architecture , or ISA, is the abstract model of a computing system that is seen by a machine language (or assembly language ) programmer, including the instruction set memory address modes processor registers , and address and data formats. Microarchitecture , also known as Computer organization is a lower level, a detailed description of the system that is sufficient for completely describing the operation of all parts of the

These unapproved articles are subject to edit intro Computer architecture is often used to refer to an area of specialization within the academic discipline of computer science . At other times, the phrase computer architecture may be used to refer to a specific machine specification, such as SPARC Intel X86 PowerPC , or Motorola 680x0 . A more precise designation for specifying such machines is instruction set architecture (ISA). In the 1980's, when computer architecture programs first began within computer science departments at various universities, heavy emphasis was placed on research related to designing better ISA's. Nowadays, the industry has converged on a few different ISA's and tends to rebuild them over and over again with faster hardware, so computer architecture has moved to focus more on the ways to speed up computer hardware and system-level software than on designing new ISA's. The academic discipline of computer architecture thus tends to overlap somewhat with fields called computer engineering , or the like, that usually are located within the academic discipline of

    TUTORIAL
    By Gurpur M. Prabhu
Read Prabhu's new book Anita's Legacy This tutorial is intended as a supplementary learning tool for students of Com S 321, an undergraduate course on computer architecture taught at Iowa State University. The text book for the course is "Computer Organization and Design: The Hardware/Software Interface" by Hennessy and Patterson. The concepts explained include some aspects of computer performance, cache design, and pipelining. Examples, interactive applets, and some problems with solutions are used to illustrate basic ideas. Most of the material has been developed from the text book as well as from "Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach" by the same authors. The problems that have been solved have been taken from a number of sources, but the solutions are unique in the sense that emphasis has been placed not only on the answers but also on the reasoning processes that will help students solve similar problems. Feedback consisting of comments and errors are welcome, and can be e-mailed to Gurpur Prabhu at prabhu@cs.iastate.edu.

This book uses the MIPS instruction-set architecture to provide concrete examples for machine instructions and hardware structures required for their execution. As a prominent example of the class of reduced instruction-set architectures (RISC), MIPS has been found quite suitable for use in various educational settings. References to simplified RISC instruction sets under the designations MiniMIPS and MicroMIPS, introduced in Chapters 5 and 13, respectively, have no relations with specific architectures offered by MIPS Technologies, Inc. These simplifications form proper subsets of the well-documented MIPS instruction set and have not been otherwise modified. Reference is also made to SPIM, a software simulator for the MIPS instruction set, which is provided free of charge to everyone, courtesy of Dr. James R. Larus.
