Phone: +44 2075948422 (x48422) At the Computer Architecture Research Group we investigate a wide range of research topics around the theory and practice, interaction of hardware and software systems. More specifically, this includes domain specific representations of computation on the system level, the architecture level, and the bit-level, including programming methodologies that exploit spatial and temporal parallelism on all three levels with the objective of increasing computational speed while decreasing power consumption. Our research interests include computer architecture from embedded processors to supercomputers, parallel programming and parallel architectures, computer arithmetic, custom computing, VLSI, CAD, compilers, dynamic optimization, algorithms and programming methodologies. In particular, we have projects ranging from custom instruction set extensions to number representations for FPGAs, and enumeration/generation based approaches to solving discrete optimization problems such as logic minimisation.

Computer Architecture Group The Computer Architecture Group's specialty is all aspects of tomorrow's computing hardware including its supporting circuit and compiler technology.
Research Projects
We have a number of funded research projects which provide a focus to the work with various individual satellite projects - see information on people in the group for further details. If you are interested in undertaking research in the group, please read the opportunities page carefully and remember you need to contact potential supervisors to discuss future projects since current projects are presented here.
Research Goals
Improvements in fabrication technology will ultimately provide the ability to construct computing devices from atomic scale components. These advances may be exploited to provide many orders of magnitude more processing power or equally impressive reductions in power consumption. The Computer Architecture Group's goal is to investigate how best to exploit these advances in order to realise a broad range of efficient, scalable and robust computing platforms. The design and implementation of computing hardware has been a major theme of the Computer Laboratory since its inception. We believe that shifting technology characteristics and the move to highly parallel processor architectures makes this a particular exciting and challenging time for research in this area. While the ability to continue to improve the underlying fabrication technology seems certain, the ability to fully exploit such advances is quickly becoming a grand challenge for computer science. Meeting this challenge will require a step change in our approach to processor architecture together with significant advances in compiler, programming language, algorithm and operating-systems design.

    CS 4515
    C-Term 2009
This is an advanced undergraduate course about computer architecture. Topics include fundamentals of computer design, processor organization, pipelining, instruction-level parallelism, parallel computer organizations, and memory hierarchies. The course is aimed at a cross-section of Computer Science students and Computer Engineering students.
    • For computer scientists, software engineers, and game developers, the course provides the tools to evaluate processor architectures and their key attributes for purposes of, for example, selecting appropriate processors for application tasks or participating in joint hardware-software architectural designs for future systems. For computer engineers, the course builds on an intermediate-level processor design course such as ECE 3803 to provide in-depth insight into advanced design alternatives of modern processors.
For all students, a goal of the course is to provide quantitative tools for understanding existing computer architectures and computer architectures that have yet to be invented. Course organization The course will be organized as a reading and team-learning-and-teaching course. Students will be expected to read most, of not all, of the primary textbook
