  • Winn Schwartau is one of the country's leading experts on information security, infrastructure protection and electronic privacy. He's also a really nice, down to earth guy who's written a really nice, down to earth book titled appropriately, "Internet & Computer Ethics for Kids (and Parents & Teachers Who Haven't Got a Clue.)" Considering the average hacker is likely to be a teenager and given that most homes now have at least one computer, adding discussions about CyberEthics to the other list of things we should discuss with our children isn't such a bad idea. As Winn points out in the book's preface, "Today's Generation Gap is often technical...But, our ignorance does not relieve us of our responsibility as parents, nor should we be afraid of the differences." Code of Ethics
ACM Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct Adopted by ACM Council 10/16/92. Preamble
      Preamble
Commitment to ethical professional conduct is expected of every member (voting members, associate members, and student members) of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). This Code, consisting of 24 imperatives formulated as statements of personal responsibility, identifies the elements of such a commitment. It contains many, but not all, issues professionals are likely to face. Section 1 outlines fundamental ethical considerations, while Section 2 addresses additional, more specific considerations of professional conduct. Statements in Section 3 pertain more specifically to individuals who have a leadership role, whether in the workplace or in a volunteer capacity such as with organizations like ACM. Principles involving compliance with this Code are given in Section 4 The Code shall be supplemented by a set of Guidelines, which provide explanation to assist members in dealing with the various issues contained in the Code. It is expected that the Guidelines will be changed more frequently than the Code.

I will strive to know myself and be honest about my capability.
      • I will strive for technical excellence in the IT profession by maintaining and enhancing my own knowledge and skills. I acknowledge that there are many free resources available on the Internet and affordable books and that the lack of my employer's training budget is not an excuse nor limits my ability to stay current in IT. When possible I will demonstrate my performance capability with my skills via projects, leadership, and/or accredited educational programs and will encourage others to do so as well. I will not hesitate to seek assistance or guidance when faced with a task beyond my abilities or experience. I will embrace other professionals' advice and learn from their experiences and mistakes. I will treat this as an opportunity to learn new techniques and approaches. When the situation arises that my assistance is called upon, I will respond willingly to share my knowledge with others. I will strive to convey any knowledge (specialist or otherwise) that I have gained to others so everyone gains the benefit of each other's knowledge.

Equal access and social justice: information as a primary good
    Jeroen van den Hoven
    Abstract
The ideas of John Rawls on the principles of social justice have dominated normative political theory, moral philosophy and applied ethics since the publication of his monumental A Theory of Justice in 1971. His seminal work, and the literature to which it has given rise, has branched to cover virtually all issues relevant to design of a just and fair society with freedom and equal opportunities for all. It has been applied to health care, education, social security, tax law, and a still increasing number of other sectors. However, an overwhelming majority of moral philosophers working along Rawlsian lines of inquiry seem to have missed the point that by designing artefacts, such as information systems and information infrastructures, technology is a force in shaping human possiblities or determining human destiny on an equal footing with educational programs and tax systems. It also seems to have escaped their attention that Information Technology has become a paramount feature of the objects of their studies in healthcare, education, science, business, government, and politics. Information Technology has become part and parcel of the tools which society uses to regulate and steer itself and its component parts.

Participatory design, communicative reason and discourse ethics
    M W J Spual Published in: ETHICOMP Journal - Vol 1 Issue 1
    Abstract
Habermas provides a focus for quite another form of discussion relevant to workplace participation. As a representative of high modernism and the liberal belief in forums for debate and problem resolution based on reason and procedural neutrality, Habermas has been the subject of a sustained communitarian critique (see, e.g., Borgmann 1993 section 4. below), questioning the validity of a democratic ideal based on universal reason. The purpose of this paper is to survey the claims made by Habermas, to consider the major weaknesses exposed by communitarians and feminists, and speculate on the possible implications for an ethically sound participatory design practice.
