22. Jan's Illustrated Computer Literacy 101: Computer Basics
An online illustrated Computer Literacy course covering the material in a college course
http://www.jegsworks.com/lessons/lessonintro.htm
Computer Basics
Y ou don't have to know everything to be comfortable with computers. But there is a lot of information that will help you understand why things are the way they are... and how disaster can strike! "Knowledge is power!" So it's to your advantage to gather all the knowledge that you can. Besides which, computers are lots of fun - when they aren't driving you insane!!!
What's in these lessons?
The lessons in this Computer Basics section of Jan's Illustrated Computer Literacy 101 explain a lot of the techno-babble that you hear about computers. The goal is to learn enough that you can follow along as computer technology becomes more and more important in our world. Consider this set of lessons "Beginning Driver's Ed" for the computer. What might be covered in a Driver's Education course in high school? How the engine works. Parts of the car. How to turn it on. How to shift gears. Rules of the road. Laws. Proper signaling. Lane changing. Basic maintenance. Changing a flat. Filling up with gas. Some clues on when "You'd better stop the car now!" The topics covered here will introduce you to a similar set of topics about computers. When you finish, you'll be just as prepared to "drive" a computer, as you were to drive a car when you finished Driver's Ed. Scary thought, isn't it? That clearly means you will need lots of practice with a skilled "driver" in the passenger's seat before you can be considered "safe on the road!" But we can get you started! But, really, you'll understand the basic ideas behind computers, some of the ills that affect computers, and some of the basic safety measures to take to keep your computer healthy. You'll gain some knowledge of how we got to today's computers and what lies ahead. It'll be great!

Computer literacy, the ability to use computers to perform a variety of tasks, is becoming fundamental to the learning process. The "information age" perhaps best describes the twentieth century; the next century has been described as the "information processing" age. A wide variety of computer skills are useful and, in some cases required, as an essential part of college learning and employment for most individuals. UMD offers many opportunities for learning these skills. In addition to the resources listed below, UMD offers opportunities for advanced computer study through computer science and electrical and computer engineering degree programs.

30. Jan's Illustrated Computer Literacy 101
An online illustrated Computer Literacy course covering the material in a college course, but easy to understand for all ages.
http://www.jegsworks.com/Lessons/index.html

Do you wish you had the time, and dollars, to take a real, live course on computers?
Then these lessons are for you!
E veryone picks up bits and pieces of information while using and working around computers. This can leave some pretty big gaps in your information landscape. These lessons are an attempt to fill in the missing pieces and to tie it all together. The "Illustrated" part means there will be lots of pictures. Other sets of lecture notes I have seen online are pretty much bare text. While the writing is often great, such text-only notes do not take advantage of the possibilities of web pages. So you will see some animations and graphics that enhance the text and, hopefully, make it clearer. This site is free for personal use. 35. Brisbane Seniors OnLine » Home
Voluntary organisation providing seniors of the greater Brisbane area with computer literacy and support whilst promoting social and recreational activities. Organisation information, locations, events and contacts.
http://www.bsol.asn.au/
TEXT SIZE: With our help your computer can become your gateway to the world! Brisbane Seniors Online is a voluntary organisation set up to help the over 50s in the Brisbane Area learn the basics of computers and the internet. Please browse around and discover how we can help you or a family member through our training program.
BSOL is a network of volunteer mentors willing to aid you in your use of computers. We arrange a time and place, a computer for you to learn on and a mentor to teach you on a one to one basis or within a group. Where possible our preferred option is to teach you on your computer in your own home. Depending upon mentor availability however group teaching might be the only option in some areas. All our mentors are volunteers and our costs are purely to cover administration and the all important public liability insurance. If you want to get started, the procedure is:
For Individuals
  • You sign up as a BSOL member - for the first 12 months, which comprises the annual $40 membership plus a one-off non-refundable $20 joining fee We advise you of your mentor's contact details The mentor will contact you and then reserve a computer on behalf of BSOL and yourself at an agreed learning location After the first lesson the mentor will arrange a mutually convenient time for the next session Your mentor will periodically provide feedback to the Hub Coordinator on your progress
Organisations
We also offer corporate membership to community groups and organisations. We cost this on the number of computers available for learning in a single location - using the formula one computer per 1.5 hour session per week. i.e. three computers in a room with three learners being taught once per week is 3 times $40 = $120 per year, plus the initial joining fee of 3 times $20 = $60. The advantage of corporate membership is we keep coming as long as there are learners who can of course change during the course of a year.

Computer Literacy TFI offers an explaination of the what Computer Literacy is and Why it is becoming so important

Tech Fluency Home About Us Computer Literacy Online Certification ... Contact Us
Computer literacy is the knowledge and ability to use computers and technology efficiently. The pervasiveness of computers is continuing to grow at an outstanding rate. As companies become ever more dependent on technology, the value a potential employee has may be measured in terms of his or her technological competency. The highest goal of a computer-literate person is to be able to learn and use new computer programs without large amounts of help. Computer literacy gives people of all ages an edge in both their careers and education.
Computer Literacy: An Online Approach
Online Learning: The First Step in Computer Literacy
TFI's online testing and learning program, CAT1, provides detailed online learning material . The online learning program offers participants a full year of help with basic computer processes. Because this is an online learning program, students are able to access this information from any Internet-enabled computer. The fully illustrated learning program provides step-by-step instructions that always focus on promoting computer literacy. CAT1 uses specific programs (Microsoft Internet Explorer , Microsoft Outlook Express , Windows XP, Mac OS-X, and Microsoft Office products including Microsoft Word , Microsoft Excel , and Microsoft PowerPoint ) as a starting point to demonstrate basic computer literacy.

Computer Literacy
"What are the costs of computer literacy? Some people argue that there are no such costs, but I believe there are a few which may be relevant. Does computer literacy affect the way we communicate, and if so, is this necessarily a bad thing? What is our future, as computer literacy becomes a necessity? What are the personal, financial, and social costs, as computer literacy becomes a necessity?
According to Webster's New World dictionary, literacy is defined as the ability to read and write. There is definitely more than one interpretation of the word "literacy" as we have seen in class discussions and from reading many essays on the subject. The world has grown beyond the understanding of literacy as the ability to read and write- we now have many diverse understandings of the word. But there is a new literacy emerging around the world that will soon demand the immediate attention of everyone.
